V. 5.5 A“SAS” Freeware Review Template

————————–

Price: Free

A. Installation SUPERAntiSpyware5.0 Excellent” – Fast, Safe and Simple

B. Un-installing SUPERAntiSpyware3.5Average – No start menu un-install feature. But you can un-install using your Windows control panel.

————————–

C. Stability Of Program5.0 Excellent” – Absolutely no stability Issues

————————–

D. Residential Shield TestN/A – Not available In Free version

DD. Browser Hi-Jack And Registry ProtectionN/A – Not available In Free version

DDD. System Repair OptionN/A – Not available In Free version

————————–

E. Detection Rate Test:

E1. Windows XP5.0Excellent

E2. Windows Vista5.0Excellent

E3. Windows 7 - 5.0Excellent

E4. Windows 85.0Excellent

————————–

F. Speed of Scan4.5 Great – Scan times have been reduced by just under 50%. So what use to take me anywhere from 35 to 45 mins to perform a scan. Now clocks in at just over 20 to 30 mins.

FF. Scan Boost5.0Excellent- This option seems to have vastly improved (yet again). So much so even my dual core computers have show at least a 10 to 20 mins differences between using regular or “Low Boost” as oppose to “High Boost” scanning options.

FFF. Types Of Different Scans Available - 5.0Excellent- With 5 different types of scans to suite your fancy. SuperAntiSpyware has all the different types of scans you’ll need. For any job you want to tackle.

G.Update Manager4.5Great – Needs to be updated manually. But works like a charm with no lag at all. As SUPERAntiSpyware has implemented smaller definition updates. There are also a lot more definitions updates available to be manually updated.  Which is great to see.

H. Scan Logs3.5 Average” – The logs could be quite a bit easier to read. But they are in the same league as most programs in this category.

I. SUPERAntiSpyware Support3.5Average – You have their “Customer Support Request Form” or “User Forum” options.

————————–

My Overall Score: 59.5/65

91.5% = A +

————————–

My Overall Outlook: SUPERAntiSpyware still remains an extremely effective anti-spyware / malware program. (Even in it’s free version package.) You are not choked to death with excessive over the top software limitations, like so many other freeware programs out there. You are still required to update SUPERAntiSpyware and you can still use it’s 5 different scanning options (minus of course the scan scheduler option).

The only 2 very minor downsides that I can see, are that you have to manually scan and manually update SuperAntiSpyware yourself. (But for most people that is not even a very big deal. Because we already do it anyways with so many other free programs such as Spybot and Malwarebytes.)

————————–

My Final Verdict: I have to admit at first glance that SUPERAntiSpyware’s major overhaul and update had me wondering if this (5.6.1020) build was what I have been waiting for for a really long time. But in this case SUPERAntiSpyware (5.6.1020) update is nothing but a quick tweak. There really is nothing of note to be said of this very minor update to a program that is not only showing it’s age. But could use a few nice tweaks updates.

NPD Online Research Panel – Survey Site Review (June 2013)

June 17, 2013

Name: NPD Online Research Panel

Link:
http://www.npdor.com/default.asp

Who Is Eligible To Participate: Canadian & US Residence Only

Type of Award Or Payment: Cash / Prizes /Sweepstakes Entries

Points or Cash Normally Earned Per Survey: $0.00

Sign-Up Time: Fairly Short

How Many Survey Invitations Should You Expect Per Week: 0 – 5

How Long Does It Take To Collect A Reward Or Cash Out: A really long time

Do They Spam You: No

Overall Rating: 0.5 out of 5 – This survey company is great if you are really lucky. But they do payout rather fast. In the end I’d say “This is an easy site to pass on. As you are not gonna miss out on anything special.” And there are way better survey sites out there. Worth all that time and effort.

NoScript (2.6.6.2) – Mozilla FireFox Add-on Review

June 15, 2013

NoScript (2.6.6.2)

A. Ease Of Use: 3/5 – Not as easy as it should be.

Often people just end up getting very frustrated with this add-on. Which often results in the person deactivating and or un-installing this add-on. But for the people who stick around long enough. End up having a very powerful tool to help stem the tide of pop-ups , banner ads and other Internet annoyances.

B. Security: 4/5 - NoScript is very helpful in securing your computer from a lot of seen and unseen Internet threats. All across the net during your day to day activities. This add-on will not impede your security. Instead it will boost it, if used correctly.

C. Usefulness: 5/5 – NoScript has enhanced my life on the net. By giving me more options to control my day to day Internet experience.

D. FireFox Slowdown: There is some lag (But will vary based on computer stats and your Internet connection)

E. Computer Slow Down: Some minor lag on older computers.

F. Type Of User I Would Recommend To Use This Add-on: A more advanced Firefox user, would find this add-on way more useful. Then a novice.

AVG Internst Security 2013 (2013.0.3345) – Paidware Review

June 13, 2013

The Rating Scale Breakdown:

  • 0  – 0.5 – Abysmal
  • 1.0 – 1.5 – Terrible
  • 2.0 – 2.5 – Poor
  • 3.0 – 3.5 – Average
  • 4.0 – 4.5 – Great
  • 5.0 – Excellent
  • Undetermined – Too soon to tell or lacking evidence to provide a solid answer
  • Not Tested – Has yet to be requested or there is some limitations to prevent accurate test results

————————–

Price: $49.99 USD/ $59.99 CAD – For 1 year and 1 PC

A. Installation AVG - 2.5Poor – This aspect of AVG has almost completely collapsed, in on itself. I am very sad to report that all thou AVG Free Anti-Virus 2013 is way better in the installation department. Then AVG Internet Security 2013.  Which without any reservations is an huge epic fail. On most systems.

B. Uninstalling AVG2.0Poor – AVG Internet Security 2013 is very sloppy uninstaller.

————————–

C. Stability Of Program4.0Great” – Not as stable as AVG Free 2013. But way better then the early builds. I have reviewed prior to this one.

————————–

D. Has AVG Free Been Compromised By Hackers Or Virus3.0 Average” – Still quite a few issues reported. But mostly on older operating systems such as XP and Vista. Also a very common false positive has been fixed. That issue being the Auto-run Trojan when inserting new unformatted USB sticks.

E. Speed of Scan5.0 Excellent – Very quick on most computers.

F. Updating - 3.5Average” – Automatic updating is fine. But if you want to manually update your AVG. Expect some epic slowness. I’m still not sure why. I have often run into times where it will stall on 30%, or 50% and it seem like forever before you get the 100% completed notice.

G. Does AVG Free Do Automatic Updates By Itself Without Any Issue5.0 Excellent – Yes, you can now with, no doubt. But leave the manual update option alone unless you want to invite stability related issues.

H. Internet Browser Cookie Detection Rate And Removal Test2.0 Poor- You are way better off with something like SUPERAntiSpyware or CCleaner that is more dedicated to removal of Internet cookies. AVG Internet cookie detection rate is terrible even with the option active and checked off.

————————–

1. Anti-Virus Detection Rate Test:

1A. Windows XP2.0 Poor

1B. Windows Vista3.0 Average

1C. Windows 7 -3.0 Average

1D. Windows 84.0Great

————————–

2. Residential Shield Test - 3.0Average – I still find AVIRA and AVAST seems to grab the virus way before AVG does.

————————–

Computers Protection

————————–

3A. Anti-Virus Scanner - 3.5Average” – AVG is barely scoring an average in this respect. And that should tell you a lot.

3B. Anti-Rootkit Scanner4.0Great” – Great option. Works well.

————————–

Web Browsing Protection

————————–

4A. Link Scanner4.5Great – Not a fan. But it can be very useful to some.

4B. Online Shield2.0Poor” – Completely in-effective and worthless.

————————–

Identity Protection

————————–

5A. Identity Protection - 2.0Poor” – Completely in-effective and worthless.

5B. Identity Alert – This feature appears to need a further upgrade. Beyond your main purchase of AVG Internet Security 2013.

————————–

E-mail Protection

————————–

6A. E-mail Scanner3.0Average” – Utterly baseline and average. I found no use for it.

6B. Anti-Spam3.0 Average” – Utterly baseline and average. Not even worth the setup.

————————–

Firewall

————————–

7. Firewall5.0 Excellent – By no means perfect. But way better then your standalone Windows built in Firewall

————————–

Extra Features

————————–

8. PC Analyzer (AKA. Fix Performance) – 0.5Abysmal“- If you don’t mind that you only can fix your errors for free once then great. But if you are like me and you probably feel this options is both somewhat misleading and out right bait to buy this extremely expensive add-on. Then you are probably with me on my conclusion.

9. Mobile ProtectionN/A – This option is pretty much just a bullet point reminder. As you can download the AVG Free Smart Phone or Tablet app from the Google Play Store. Again let me make it clear even thou you have paid for AVG Internet Security 2013. You don’t get AVG Pro Smart Phone app.

10. Speed Test5.0Excellent- I found this addition to be very useful and very accurate as well. If only all speed tests apps/programs and or sites were this worry free.

11. Tech Buddy Support0.0Abysmal” – This is just a money grab. Completely worthless as well as falsely advertised and very overall misleading.

12. AVG Direct Support0.5Abysmal” – With only a free forum and a phone number to call for support.

You will often find yourself ether being told to go to the free forum or they will recommend you go to further specialized support via Tech Buddy. Which like I said above is a MONEY GRAB. Completely worthless as well as falsely advertised and very overall misleading.

————————–

My Overall Score: 75/125

60.0 % = C

————————–

My Final Verdict - AVG Internet Security 2013 takes what it once was and flips it on its heads. Then presents itself as a new more user friendly version of its past iterations. “Well sorry guys, That won’t fly with me.”

This version of AVG and I’m talking about all AVG 2013 versions. Are clearly tailored first to Windows 8 and then to Windows 7. If you don’t have ether. Then you maybe as disappointed as I was. When I first upgraded from AVG Internet Security 2012.

  • 2.0 – 2.5 – Poor
  • 3.0 – 3.5 – Average
  • 4.0 – 4.5 – Great
  • 5.0 – Excellent

————————–

V. 6.0 - “AVG FREE Tablet AntiVirus Security for Android” Review Template

————————–

Tested On A: Asus Nexus 7 (Model: ME37OT)

Operating System: Android (V4.2.2)

Price: Free (Google Play App Store)

A. Installation AVG Mobile Anti-Virus Free5.0 Excellent” – Very easy just click on AVG Anti-Virus Free  App icon and press Install.

B. Uninstalling AVG Mobile Anti-Virus Free4.5Great – It could be a little easier to remove. Just follow the steps below to un-install your AVG App.

B1. Go to your “Settings

B2. Then go to “Applications“.

B3. Then choose the “Anti-Virus App“.

B4. The press and hold your finger on the app

B5. There should be a screen that appears where you can uninstall the AVG App.

B6. Wait a few seconds till the App is fully uninstalled

B7. Then your good to go

————————–

C. Stability Of Program5.0 Excellent” – No crashes or freezing. Since I downloaded the app.

————————–

AVG FREE Tablet AntiVirus Security - Protection

D1. App(s) Protection5.0Excellent” – AVG will tell you is the app is rouge and not affiliated with the Android App store. It does an excellent job at this. Thus far it has warned me 3 times.

D2. Settings Protection5.0Excellent” – This option is very simple yet very important. It makes sure in your options to install and download apps of “unknown sources” will not be allowed to occur. Other then that super important job. I saw no other reason for this Protection option.

D3. Content Protection4.0Great” – This feature is by no means outstanding. But I have had a few “AD” detection’s. I’m assuming that means “AD”-ware. But I can’t be sure at this point.

————————–

E. Real Time Scanner5.0Excellent” – This feature works like a charm. You can ever see it in action.

E1. SD Card Scanner3.5Average- Nothing special here. This is pretty much an external drive scanner. In this case your SD card.

E2. File Scanner5.0Excellent” - This feature works like a charm.

E3. Safe Web Surfing3.5Average” – Nothing special here. No detentions or warning. I’m still unclear as to what this protection is suppose to do.

E4. Deep File Scanner3.5 Average” – Nothing special here. No detentions or warning.

————————–

AVG FREE Tablet AntiVirus Security - Performance

F1. Task Killer3.0 Average - This option is exactly what you would expect and nothing else.

F2. Battery Consumption3.0Average” – This option could of been so much more then. Here your phone or tablet is at ##%.

F3. Data Usage4.0Great” – Great, if you are on a set data plan.

F4. Storage Usage4.5Great” – A really great option to check on both your Internal Memory and your SD card memory stats.

————————–

AVG FREE Tablet AntiVirus Security - Privacy

F. App LockerN/A – Not available in Free version

FF. App Backup - N/A – Not available in the Free version

F1. Wipe Device  (Factory Re-set) - 4.0Great” – Great tool for people who unwittingly corrupted their device.

F2. Wipe SD Card5.0Excellent” – Great for when you are upgrading your devices memory or if you wish to trade or sell your SD card.

————————–

AVG FREE Tablet AntiVirus Security - Anti-Thief

G. Anti-TheftNot Tested

————————–

H. Speed of Scan4.0 Great – A little slow. But what do you expect with very limited Smart phone system resources.

I. Updating3.5Average – It needs to be updated manually and it won’t always update. The first time.

J. AVG SupportNot Tested

————————–

My Overall Score: 80/95

76.0 % = B

————————–

My Final Verdict -Part 1- The main difference between AVG 2013 for the PC and AVG for the Android Tablet. Is that is it setup into 4 different layers of protection.

The 1st layer would be your - Protection

1. Apps -This is where the scanner will pick up any rouge apps. That are not certified via the Google Play Android App store.

2. Content – This is where you’ll find out if you downloaded or transferred a virus on to your tablet. Via Wi-Fi, USB or Bluetooth.

3. Settings – Is also very important and often overlooked when people first get their phone. Often there are settings with in setting that make your smart phone less then secure. Such as letting unknown or un-certified apps (We Are Talking About Non-Google Play App Store Certified/Approved)  to your private data, or transmitting your location without your permission..

The 2nd layer is the AVG Anti-Virus FREE for Android - Performance

1. Task Killer

2. Battery Consumption

4. Wipe Personal Data

5. Data Usage

6. Storage Usage

The 3rd layer is the AVG Anti-Virus FREE for Android - Anti-Theft

1. Device Locater

The 4th layer is the AVG Anti-Virus FREE for Android - Privacy

1. App Locker – Only 10 day limited trial

2. App Backup – Only 10 day limited trail

3. Wipe Device

4. Wipe SD Card

My Final Verdict -Part 2- Now performance wise. This is no watered down version of the full blow PC version. Yes, there are less options and scanning is a little slower. Due to tablet limitations. But other then that you get what you would expect. A rather good free Anti-Virus program.

**As per the norm it is highly recommend that you upgrade to the newest version of AVG FREE Tablet AntiVirus Security for Android when available / promted. Also important is to update your AVG virus definitions as often as possible. Which in the case of this app there are new virus definition updates nearly everyday.

Global Test Market – Survey Site Review (June 2013)

June 10, 2013

Name: Global Test Market

Link:
https://www.globaltestmarket.com/index.php

Who Is Eligible To Participate: Pretty Much Anyone

Type Of Award Or Payment: Paypal, Cheque, Sweepstakes Entry’s

(1 point = .05 cents US/CAD) Must Have 1000 Points = $50 USD Minimum To Collect

Points or Cash Normally Earned Per Survey: 0 – 100

Sign-Up Time: Pretty Lengthy

How Many Survey Invitations Should You Expect Per Week: 10 – 50

How Long Does It Take To Collect A Reward Or Cash Out: Often less the a year

Do They Spam You: No

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 – Global Test Market survey site has dramatically increased their overall amount of surveys. As oppose to decreasing their overall invites (Like so many other survey sites have been doing at an ever increasing rate). Since my last review way back on (March 2013). I’ve noticed that there are more survey invites worth points as compared to the sweepstakes entries. (Thank goodness for that bit of good news.)
