Big Data is Changing the Face of the Online World

April 20, 2017

Big Data is Changing the Face of the Online World

Today, there is more data available than ever before. Every online transaction, mouse click, social media like, share or retweet – indeed every webpage you click on – creates its very own data stream. As the amount of data has increased, the tools and techniques for collating, sorting and analyzing it have also advanced. Welcome to the world of big data analytics. Welcome to the future.

Understanding of the marketing and strategic insights that big data can provide is still in its infancy, but as organizations devote more and more of their time and budgets into cutting-edge big data analytics, it is becoming clear that this new paradigm will bring unprecedented growth and evolution to the Internet, and to our relationship with it.

Big data in action

Sometimes, it can already feel like we are in some Orwellian society and Big Brother is watching us. How often have you searched the net for something, only to log on to Facebook and be bombarded with banner ads for just what you were seeking?

Right there, is a simple form of big data in action. All sorts of services are silently watching what we do and how we do it in order to predict our next move, and this will advance exponentially over the coming years, as methods of data analytics improve.

For example, even as you read this, your LinkedIn profile is quietly at work, connecting you with career opportunities and Siri is sitting patiently on your wrist, monitoring your health and exercise.

A bespoke and personalized user experience

As we look to the future, increased usage of big data across business, social media and e commerce sites will lead to a more user-driven experience as we surf the net. Each website will increasingly seek to present data in a customized way that is designed to appeal to you and anticipate your needs.

Programmatic not problematic

The word has drawn some negative media attention in recent weeks, but programmatic business transactions are clearly the way forward. The problems reported in the newspaper are more down to a lack of understanding in application, an inevitable hurdle with any new and developing technology.

The truth is that ultimately, programmatic transactions will provide a more optimized and cost-efficient decision making process than any manual system can hope to do.

Implications that go beyond the web

Big data might be largely born of the Internet, but its implications and applications will go way beyond it into the physical world. From self-driving cars to automatically adjusted airline bookings on the basis of weather conditions, it will seep into our lives and our consciences whether we like it or not.

The future is already here.

Best eCommerce Website Platforms for Small Business

April 11, 2017

Best eCommerce Website Platforms for Small Business

There’s money to be made in eCommerce, and just about anyone can build a successful eCommerce business. Besides a great product, you’ll need a killer website. Here are three of the best eCommerce website platforms to choose from.

Shopify

Shopify is the leading eCommerce platform, and for good reason. The designs look great right out of the box. You can choose from about 20 free templates and over 80 more than you’ll pay for. The designers at Shopify stay up-to-the-minute on trends, so your shop will look fresh and current.

Shopify offers a host of features like inventory management, support for 70 payment gateways, the ability to offer discount codes and gift cards, unlimited SKUs, and more. It’s super easy to get up and running. Unlike many other platforms, it’s not open source, so you’re kind of married to it, but there’s enough functionality to do just about anything you want.

WooCommerce

WooCommerce is a plugin for WordPress, so it ‘borrows’ the design of your WordPress theme. Some of the WordPress themes have been designed to work with WooCommerce in mind, so if you’re starting from scratch building a website and an eCommerce store, choose one of these themes for the whole package. If you’re in a hurry, use Storefront, the default store theme. It’s free, and will certainly get the job done. WooCommerce is open source, so you can download it for free from WordPress. But once you get the software for free, you will pay for hosting, an SSL certificate, and a top-level domain.

Magento

Magento is another open source platform, with themes that start at $1. Like WooCommerce, Magento is open source, and there are at least 5,000 (yes, 5,000) apps and add-ons you can use with it. If you have some technical aptitude and the time to spend, Magento may allow you to have a more customizable and unique site than the other two.

All three of these platforms offer responsive design, SEO capabilities, customization and blog functionality (although Magento’s blog capability is by way of a plug-in).

To determine which of these platforms is right for your eCommerce site, consider what you need. How many SKUs do you plan to have? What payment gateway will you use? Do you need to be able to drop ship? Do you want to offer gift cards? How do you want to handle abandoned carts? Try to envision the entire ordering process, from start to finish, in every scenario you can think of. And consider what you may need a few years from now, not just today.

Then look at the price. This can be a complicated comparison because different platforms price differently. Once you’ve identified what you need, you can compare the price you’ll actually pay. That will give you a true basis for comparison.

You can set up an impressive eCommerce site on any of these platforms. Comparing them for your specific needs will point you in the right direction.

AVG Internet Security 2016 (2016.151.8007) – Paidware Review

Price$74.99 CAD / For Unlimited Devices

A. Installing AVG4.0 Great” – There is no doubt that AVG has improved in this area. But saying that we had very mixed results with some of our team getting AVG Internet Security installed the first go around. While other team members took 3 or 4 times to install AVG Internet Security 2016.

B. Un-installing AVG – 4.5 Great” – AVG Free Anti-Virus 2015 is a lot cleaner un-installer this time around. Much better compared to previous versions of AVG going back 5 or 6 years.

————————–

C. Stability Of Program5.0 Excellent – The UI (User Interface) seems to have been completely fixed in AVG 2014. Along with the jenkey manual update option.

————————–

D. Has AVG Free Been Compromised By Hackers Or Virus4.0Great” – No reports of AVG being compromised.

E. Speed of Scan5.0 Excellent – Very quick on most computers.

F. Updating – 5.0 Excellent – Automatic and manual updating is great. No more issues here compared to AVG 2014 manual update lag spikes.

G. Does AVG Free Do Automatic Updates By Itself Without Any Issue5.0 Excellent – Yes, you can now with, no doubt. But leave the manual update option alone unless you want to invite stability related issues.

H. Internet Browser Cookie Detection Rate And Removal Test2.0 Poor– You are way better off with something like SUPERAntiSpyware or CCleaner that is more dedicated to removal of Internet cookies. AVG Internet cookie detection rate is terrible even with the option active and checked off.

————————–

1. Anti-Virus Detection Rate Test:

1A. Windows XP – 4.0Great

1B. Windows Vista – 4.0Great

1C. Windows 74.0Great

1D. Windows 8.14.0Great

1E. Windows 104.0Great

————————–

2. Residential Shield Test 4.0Great – I still find SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware seems to grab the virus way before AVG does.

————————–

Computers Protection

————————–

3A. Anti-Virus Scanner – 4.0Great” – AVG has finally beaten their just average score. And that should tell you a lot.

3B. Anti-Rootkit Scanner4.0Great” – Great option. Works well.

————————–

Web Browsing Protection

————————–

4A. Link Scanner4.5 Great“ – Not a fan. But it can be very useful to some.

4B. Online Shield2.5Poor” – Completely in-effective and worthless.

————————–

Identity Protection

————————–

5A. Identity Protection 2.0Poor” – Completely in-effective and worthless.

————————–

E-mail Protection

————————–

6A. E-mail Scanner3.0Average” – Utterly baseline and average. I found no use for it.

6B. Anti-Spam3.0 Average” – Utterly baseline and average. Not even worth the setup.

————————–

Firewall

————————–

7. Firewall5.0 Excellent – By no means perfect. But way better then your standalone Windows built in Firewall

————————–

Extra Features

————————–

8. File Shredder4.0Great – I found this addition to be very useful. But lacking the multiple layer shredding options that Spybot – Search & Destroy or even Advance System Care 7 has.

9. PC Analyzer (AKA. PC TuneUp) – 0.5Abysmal“- If you don’t mind that this option just reports errors on your computer and does not even allow you to correct said error. Even once as was the case in the past.

Then your probably are like me and you probably feel this options is both somewhat misleading and out right bait to buy this expensive $39.99 CAD/USD add-on. Then you are probably with me on my conclusion. That it should not be there in the first place. Try giving us features that are fully functional and at least somewhat useful like the shredder option.

10. Tech Buddy Support0.0Abysmal” – This is just a cash grab. Completely worthless as well as falsely advertised and overally misleading to the end user.

11. AVG Direct Support0.5Abysmal” – With only a free forum and a phone number to call for support.

You will often find yourself ether being told to go to the free forum or they will recommend you go to further specialized support team via Tech Buddy. Which like I said above is an epic MONEY GRAB. Completely worthless as well as falsely advertised as well as overally misleading.

————————–

My Overall Score: 91/130

70 % = B –

————————–

My Final Verdict – AVG Free Anti-Virus 2016 takes the same approach. That AVG 2015 took with regards to the UI (User-Interface) and streamlined interface.  It is very simple and easy to navigate. Just the way that an anti-virus program should be.

**As per the norm it is highly recommend that you upgrade to the newest version of AVG Internet Security 2016 when available and or prompted.

Why Popularity Contests and CMS Systems Don’t Go Together

March 23, 2017

Why Popularity Contests and CMS Systems Don’t Go Together

Users who are ready to launch their very first website tend to be attracted to the most popular choices of content management systems. Right at the top of the list is WordPress, closely followed by the likes of Joomla!, Drupal, Magento, ModX, and vBulletin. Thanks to algorithms and paid advertising, the rankings are often a bit misleading. When it comes to choosing the right CMS, the process deserves a little more than a simple Google search, as technical abilities and other important factors should also be considered.

The Hack Tracker

When a website owner wishes to monetize their site and perhaps add an e-commerce aspect as well, it’s imperative that they choose a secure CMS. Recent reports rate WordPress as one of the most dangerous CMSs for those who have an e-commerce site. WordPress is followed by Joomla! And Magento. A small percentage also goes to Drupal. This information is both informative and a little disappointing, considering the high number of recommendations for their platforms.

User Experience and Technical Know-How

It’s important to know and understand more than just an overview of different CMS’s and what they can offer. For instance, some of the platforms require users to have a basic to intermediate understanding of coding before attempting the big stuff. If this isn’t the case, that website could sit on the shelf for a very long time or could result in a high price tag as website owners harness the skills of developers to get the job done. Ongoing maintenance could also be an issue as many of these platforms have limitations as to what can be done on the backend.

More than Just a Blog

Website owners who require their sites to be a bit more dynamic and responsive will want to use a CMS platform that responds better to coding. This is for those who wish to have business or enterprise websites, not just merely a blog. For these, users recommend looking into CMS platforms such as Liferay, Typo 3, CMS Made Simple, and Alfresco. These platforms provide far more sophisticated access, however, they do require the user to have more superior skills. Another CMS platform to consider is Movable Type, which is regarded as an advanced version of WordPress. This is the ideal platform for those who wish to create news site content, online publications, and sophisticated blogs.

iPhone 8 Looking to Top the Storage Charts… Again

March 17, 2017

iPhone 8 Looking to Top the Storage Charts… Again

With the highly-anticipated release of the 10th anniversary iPhone upgrade, one of the things users can look forward to is a slightly different design. As the anniversary phone, it’s rumoured to have some terrific app upgrades as well, but for those who have stuck with the iPhone through the worst and the best times, the on-board storage is usually what sets it apart from the rest. There are the picture quality and extensive list of apps that add into the mix as well, but the storage is what brings users back for more.

What the iPhone 7 Plus Left Us With

Apart from a small hissing sound when the A10 Fusion Chip (quad-core!) is in full force, the iPhone 7 Plus is a near-perfect design. It provides users with waterproof, dust proof design but it’s really the 2x optical zoom that sets this phone apart from the rest. The phone packs a 5.5in 1,080 x 1,920 resolution display and also features a slightly longer battery life.

One of the downsides of this phone is the exorbitant price for only a few additional features. There is also the fact that there is no headphone jack, which could send a few previous iPhone fans running to android technology. For those who have the iPhone 6, they may want to wait for the release of the iPhone 8 before they upgrade. This model offers users 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB storage options, which puts the brand right at the top of the food chain.

Even With All That On board Storage….

iPhone users have become accustomed to using iCloud services, however, a recent spate of hacking activities have sent iCloud users looking for the best alternatives. Cloud storage is useful not only for the ability to keep documents and images safe, but it also creates an easy platform for interaction and sharing. Users who wish to utilize the best of on board and online storage should consider their options carefully. Pricing, functionality, syncing, accessibility and security are all essential factors when it comes to choosing the right options.

When this storage starts running out, it might be time to free up some space. Movies, music, clips, and podcasts all take up a substantial amount of room. Backing these up to cloud storage can sometimes result in duplication’s and need to be cleared out from time to time.
