5 Apps to Help You Organize your Home Life

June 22, 2016

Computer Desk

Technology permeates nearly every aspect of 21st century life. From business and industry to schools and even homes, electronic gadgets are essential for our daily routines. At Modernize, we think that families and homeowners can embrace the many benefits of technology in order to provide a coherent and organized home life. Here are 5 of the top apps to help you organize your life at home.

Kitchen assistants

Epicurious

Epicurious is a free iOS recipe app that allows you to access and store over 35,000 recipes from all over the Internet. More than just a standard recipe app, Epicurious has an intelligent kitchen timer function that tells you how long a particular ingredient will take to cook and offers voice control in Cook Mode to keep you hands free while cooking. A recipe app like this one will revolutionize your home life instantly.

Also recommended: KitchenMath

An inexpensive conversion app, KitchenMath is only $0.99 on iOS and takes the stress out of unit conversion and temperature conversion. A must if you cook often (and aren’t a fan of math).

Productivity/to-do lists

Wunderlist

Every functional home needs a way to keep track of tasks and lists. Wunderlist lets you create and edit shareable lists, syncing automatically as updates come in. You can also delegate tasks and subtasks to members of the family and add due dates and deadlines to particular items. The basic version of this app is perfect for family organization, but for $4.99 per month you can choose the Pro option with unlimited access and help your family business or freelance work get organized as well.

Also recommended: Evernote

If you want a free shareable note-taking app that also functions as a to-do list, Evernote is for you. Create and edit your own notes and files in and out of the application, share with your family, and access anywhere.

Finances

PocketGuard

Managing home finances is complicated to say the least, so make your budget management less stressful with PocketGuard, a free bank account tracker and budget management app. PocketGuard categorizes expenditures and funds, remembering your regular bills, loan payments, and debits so you don’t have to. The In My Pocket feature lets you track funds across all accounts and lets you know exactly how much money you have at any given time. Supporting all major US banks, this app will take complications out of bank balancing.

Also recommended: Wally

Wally is a free personal finance app that allows you to set financial goals, balance your budget, and save your data to iCloud while remembering your preferences and functioning as a smart (ie. learning) application.

Calendars

Fantastical 2

Perhaps even more important than to-do lists, a calendar app will become essential for your organized home life. Fantastical 2 is on the higher end of the price scale at $4.99, but its pleasant user interface and multiple calendar views take it from basic calendar to premium app instantly. This app also shows event location maps and lets you set reminders for particular events using predetermined parsers, dictations, and normal language. Like all good calendar apps, Fantastical 2 supports and syncs with other calendars so everyone can access your schedule.

Also recommended: iOS Calendar

If you don’t want to shell out for a calendar app (and if you and your family all use iOS devices), Apple’s Calendar app works perfectly well for shared calendars and event reminders and comes pre-installed on iOS devices.

For kids

iAllowance

Keep your kids’ finances all in one place with iAllowance, an allowance manager, chore chart, and reward app. Although it costs $3.99 to download, this app is easy to use and has an attractive chalkboard style UI. Create banks for any and all of your children’s funds, separating funds by child, and see transaction lists, give rewards, assign chores, and credit regular allowances. Parental controls and automatic syncing between devices will allow you and the other adults in your home keep control while letting your children safely see where their money is going.

Also recommended: Disney Movies Anywhere

Disney Movies Anywhere is a Disney subscription app that is free to download, letting you access your purchased Disney films from anywhere. Who doesn’t need a babysitter every once in awhile ?

IObit Smart Defrag (3.2.0) – Freeware Review

September 10, 2014

Program Name: IObit Smart Defrag

AA. Cost: Free

BB. Is It Worth The Time To Download ?: Yes, with absolutely no reservations.

1. Ease Of Use – Just click and go. I would personally advise if you do use this program. To try to use the analyze option first before the full defrag. So you know how long it may take to run the full scan.

1A. Interface – A very sleek and sexy new (Windows 8 Metro Themed) interior with 2 main buttons – DEFRAG and ANALYZE (Both offer you yet more options via a drop down menu). But there are also 4 tabs. -State (C:),  Automatic Defrag,  Boot Time Defrag, Report and the BRAND new Action Center Integration.

2A. Quality Of Analyze Scan Option – Very quick and accurate

2B. Quality Of Defrag Processes – Excellent

2C. Quality Of Defrag Optimization – Rather good. As I do not need to defrag as often after the process has been completed. It also tends to keep my PC speed at a very decent respectable level.

2D. Speed of Scan – Pretty quick, I find it on par with Auslogic disk defrag free.

3. Updating – Does not automatically update itself. But instead it directs you to IObit’s download and or mirror page(s).

4. Can You Run Other Programs During A Scan ? Yes

4A. Can You Run Programs During An Update ? Yes

5. Is There A Progress Bar? Yes, there is a progress bar

6. Can You Leave Smart Defrag Running Without Issue ? Yes

7. Is There Adware Or Spyware Bundled With It ? There is a toolbar, home page change option and Advanced System Care silent install options available during the installation process. But you can decline it (opt out) and there is also other IObit freeware that they ask if you want installed. But you can skip or decline that as well. Please see important program side note underneath the programs final score.

8. Is It Stable ? Yes

10. How Long Do Scans Take ? The first time you run smart defrag. It may take awhile.  But afterwards you can easily cut that time in half.

Overall I give IObit Smart Defrag (3.2.0) a – 4 out of 5 – Smart Defrag crushes most of its competition with great ease. I highly recommend Smart Defrag to anyone. Who is sick and tired of the disk defragger built into Windows. And that goes double for Windows Vista users. Smart Defrag is very light on resources and safe to use. Even for the most technically impaired computer users out there.

Smart defrag also allows for a very accurate disk drive fragmentation readings (Such as 0.15 % disk drive fragmentation). Instead of getting stuck with whole number read outs (Such as 1.0% disk drive fragmentation) That is provided as common place in so many other disk defragger programs out there.

Important Program Side Note: IObit has decided to add this program to their already full freeware suite. Via their ACTION CENTER. Which you may have already noticed has now fully swallowed all but one of their freeware programs. And now has become their new UI (User Interface) for IObit programs. Other then IObit Uninstaller. To tell you I am unhappy with this new development is an epic understatement. I hate having programs I want mate with programs I don’t want. Just for the fact they are from the same company.

I much rather not have Advanced System Care Free at all on my computer. Instead I am forced by their new freeware suite. That sort of beats you over the head to have it installed and updated or face a more then annoying LARGE RED error message notice to “FIX ALL PROBLEMS/ERRORS“.

Mirekusoft’s Install Monitor (2.0.292.0) Premium Edition – Paidware Review

May 1, 2014

The Rating Scale Breakdown:

  • 0  – 0.5 – Abysmal
  • 1.0 – 1.5 – Terrible
  • 2.0 – 2.5 – Poor
  • 3.0 – 3.5 – Average
  • 4.0 – 4.5 – Great
  • 5.0 – Excellent
  • Undetermined – Too soon to tell or lacking evidence to provide a solid answer
  • Not Tested – Has yet to be requested or there is some limitations to prevent accurate test results

————————–

Price$24.99 CAD/USD – For 1 PC (30-day trial version)

Size: 2.7 MB to 3.3 MB

A. Installation Mirekusoft’s Install Monitor –  3.5Average” – Surprisingly slow on a top of the line Windows 7 64bit laptop running Windows Home Premium

B. Un-installing Mirekusoft’s Install Monitor – 3.5 Average“ – No start menu un-install feature. But you can un-install using your Windows control panel.

————————–

C. Stability Of Program5.0 Excellent – Very responsive e-regardless of mode or function you are using.

————————–

D. Speed of Program Start-Up 5.0 Excellent – Very quick no hiccups here.

E. Speed of Programs Uninstall Functionality5.0 Excellent – Very quick on par with other uninstaller suites in the same category.

————————–

F. Ease Of Use Test 4.0 Great” – A little on the technical side. But that’s part of the beauty in this beast, you need that extra info to decide if you want the program or not. But saying that this maybe a little bit of a stretch for non-technically minded people.

————————–

1. Start-up Monitor – 5.0 Excellent – Great option. Works well and has all the information you need to decide if you want the program to be running at computer start-up.

 ————————–

2. Program Tree – 5.0 Excellent – Never have I seen a program feature quite like this and so easy to use.

————————–

3. Program Process Viewer5.0 Excellent – An easier and more responsive task manager. Then your built-in or stock TASK MANAGER.

————————–

4. Program Scanner – 5.0 Excellent – Hey that programs new ! What program is that exactly ? Is it a bird or a plane no it’s program scanner. Finally you can figure out easily what a program is all about with links and somewhat detailed bio. Of course not all programs will be available or as detailed as other say AVG or SUPERAntiSpyware. But thous far I have been very impressed.

————————–

5. Tech Support – 3.0 Average – There is e-mail contact or there is their very sparse forums.

————————–

My Overall Score: 49/55

89 % = A

————————–

My Final Verdict – This program does as advertised and does it real well. There are some very minor issues. Such as having to run the program in Admin mode or the lack of a start menu un-install feature. But saying that what it does it does real well and it even offers options not in other programs of its kind like more detailed start-up program info. It also has a beefed up Task Manager options with program trees. This program takes the guess work out of uninstalling a program or mistakenly uninstalling a program.

This program is great for day to day use as well with it’s enhanced task manager. See behind the glass at what is really taking up all your memory and processing power. I say “Take the power back and don’t let your computer dictate whats going on behind the scenes of your computer.”
