Skype (7.1.0.105) – Freeware Review

March 5, 2015

AA. Cost: Free (But, there is a paid version as well)

1. Ease Of Use – Extremely easy to use. Once setup has been completed (AKA registration (Sign-up), mic, headset and or webcam have all been setup and adjusted. To you liking, it may take a little tweaking to get it just right. But once Skype has been setup. You can just leave Skype be from that point on. Unless of course you need to tweak audio and or video. Both of which can be done on the fly.)

1A. Interface - Very simple, clean and straight forward

2. Quality Of Program – Skype has improved yet again. This time with an overly dramatic blue UI (User Interface) face lift.

3. Speed of Sign-in – A lot faster then past versions. And a lot less jerky then past versions.

4. Can you run other programs while running Skype ? Yes

5. Can you leave Skype running without issue ? Yes

6. Is there adware or spyware bundled with Skype ? Yes, there is a Toolbar you can opt out of and a “Click To Call” Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox Add-on. That you can also opt out of.  There are also some ads now that pop-up. I don’t really have any big issues with them (But they are really rather large). But it can be bothersome to some user. Who are not use to thous types of ads.

7. Is Skype Stable ? Yes, there is no question Skype is a very stable program. But it does depend a lot on the stability and quality of your Internet connection.

I give Skype an overall score of 4 out of 5 – I truly believe “Once you go Skype. You don’t go back.” Skype is truly a much better option. It annihilates it’s competition such as Team Speak or Ventrillo.

On A Side Note: The only major flaw of Skype is it lack of ability to host between 6-25 people. Such as playing MMOs like WOW or other such games. Skype is more of a personal experience. But since I don’t and I also don’t par-take in Facebook. I don’t feel I need anything other then Skype.

———————-

Major Skype Technical Stability Side Note: The Skype version and devices your using matter a lot. To learn more please read on.

*I have had some reports of Skype being choppy and audio quality being very poor. When connecting to someone with an out-of-date version of Skype. In fact, I had such a bad issue with my audio quality. I had to e-mail my mates and ask them to upgrade to this version. Thankfully after they had upgraded. We no longer had any more audio or video quality issues.

**But unfortunately stability, audio quality and video quality can vastly differ based on what Skype version you are using and what device your using it on. Again, unfortunately in this case it is trial and error.  Not all devices will work together and not all versions of Skype have the same features as say the full release of the Windows Desktop version. Even the Windows 8 version has massively different set of features then say the XP, Vista and or Windows 7 versions. I’ll also goes further on the same note by saying the PS Vita and Android versions of Skype lack some key features and options. That the Windows desktop version has in spades.

You honestly won’t miss many of the features until they are gone. That or are hidden in some hard to find place with in Skype. For instances PS Vita version of Skype does not support text messaging, only voice. While Android seems to be missing some of the more common privacy and customization options the Windows desktop version of Skype has.

Auslogics Disk Defrag Free (5.3.0.0) – Freeware Review

March 4, 2015

Name: Auslogics Disk Defrag Free

Version: (5.3.0.0)

AA. Cost: Free

BB. Is Auslogic Disk Defrag Worth The Download ?: Yes, it is.

1. Ease Of Use – Super simple. There are basically 4 options Analyze , Defrag and Defrag & Optimize and Quick Defrag.

1A. Interface - I would hazard a guess at saying that this interface is idiot proof.

2. Quality Of Scan – Really fast, but often a little over inflated fragmentation rates wise.

2A. Speed Of Scan – Regular scan time for a 500 gig hard drive ranges anywhere from under 5 mins to around 2 hrs. The time it takes to defrag your hard drive. Does vastly depend on how fragmented your hard drive  is. And your system stats.

2B. Ease Of Reading The Final Report: Harder then one might expect.

3. Updating – When you check to see if there is an update. It will bring you to the Auslogic Disk Defrag website. Where if there is an update available. It will be a highlight in blue. You can then click on the link to download said new version and then install it to your PC.

4. Can You Run Other Programs During A Scan ? Yes

4A. Can You Run A Programs During An Update ? Yes

5. Is There A Progress Bar ? Yes

6. Can You Leave Auslogic Disk Defrag Running Without Issue ? Yes

7. Is There Adware Or Spyware Bundled With Auslogic Disk Defrag ? Yes, there is an optional toolbar. You can opt-out of.

8. Is Auslogic Disk Defrag Stable ? Yes

I give Auslogics Disk Defrag Free an overall score of 3.5 out of 5 - Auslogic Disk Defrag Free is a good Disk Defrag program. But no where near the best. Auslogic Disk Defrag Free can offers up whole number percentages such as 1% hard drive fragmentation rate. While other disk defragger programs can offer up a little more accurate read-outs to the last percentage point. (Such as a read out of 1.55% overall disk fragmentation rate)

Auslogic also seems to always round up the nearest whole percentage. Which often over inflates the need to defrag your hard drive.

Toluna Survey Panel – Survey Site Review (March 2015)

March 2, 2015

Name: Toluna Survey Panel

Link: http://us.toluna.com/ -US Site Link-

Link: http://ca.toluna.com/ -Canadian Site Link-

Who Is Eligible To Participate: US or Canadian Residence Only

Type of Award Or Payment: Credits / Paypal Money / Facebook Credits / Amazon.com or .ca e-gift cards / Sweepstakes / Product Samples

Points Or Cash Normally Earned Per Survey:  0 – 1,000 credits

Sign-Up Time: Fairly Short

How Many Survey Invitations Should You Expect Per Week: 0 – 10

How Long Does It Take To Collect A Reward Or Cash Out: Between 6 to 12 months on average.

Do They Spam You: No

Overall Rating: 2 out of 5 – I still feel the amount of credits required to cash out could be a lot less. Imagine needing over 20,000 credits just for the $20 USD/CAD Paypal payout. That is a pretty insane notion to me as a participant in this survey site company. Well you could always gamble and trade in 1,000 points to enter one of their random sweepstakes contests. Some of which have rather good prizes.

ImTranslator (8.9) – Mozilla FireFox Add-on Review

February 28, 2015

ImTranslator (8.9)

A. Ease Of Use: 4/5 – A very easy and straight forward add-on, but there are still some settings that can get a bit tedious to newer Firefox users.

B. Security: Not Applicable To This Add-on

C. Usefulness: 4/5 – Both my life as a member of the (CSW) team and my life on the net would be a lot harder without this add-on. If you ever wondered how to say something in another language, or even if you just ran into a site and or blog that is not in your own native tongue / language.

D. FireFox Slowdown: At times this add-on can really slow down your browser.

E. Computer Slow Down: PC slowdown can occur on the very rare occasion. Often it will occur when you leave this add-on by accident with in your FireFox browser Window, or if you have been in a FireFox session for quite a while. And then you decide you want to translate a large swath of text.

F. Type Of User I Would Recommend To Use This Add-on: Any level of Firefox user could benefit from this add-on.

Very Important Firefox Add-on Compatibility Note: The add-on NoScript (NoScript Review Link) will cause this add-on to crash or not work at all. You will need to add  imtranslator.net to your NoScript White list, which can be found in your Firefox add-ons. Go to the NoScript add-on. Highlight it, then go to options. Go to second tab called whitelist then add imtranslator.net. Then press Allow, and you can then close Firefox, and re-load it. Then everything should be all good.
