SpeedFan (4.52) – Freeware Review

July 28, 2016

1. What Does SpeedFan Do ? SpeedFan monitors your CPU, Mother Board, Hard-drives and internal fans and even your graphic card or cards (as well as GPU’s) and gives you an easy to use temperature read out. Both in your system tray and via your Vista sidebar (If you have it running) with the correct up to date sidebar widget. So you can tell how hot your computer is running and to curb any possible damage. As well as to improve your overall system performance.

2. Ease Of Use – SpeedFan is very easy to use because all you need to do is install it and you are good to go. In most cases SpeedFan will auto-detect most CPU’s, Motherboards and Graphics Cards. There has yet to be a computer thus far that has not detected all or most of the internal components.

3. Interface – Very simple SpeedFan has a few easy to use tabs and that is pretty much it. SpeedFan is by no means fancy, but that is how I like it. Simple and to the point with no pointless filler. Dragging it down.

4. Can You Leave SpeedFan Running Without Issue ? Yes, you can no doubt

5. Is There Any Adware Or Spyware Bundled With SpeedFan ? No

6. Is SpeedFan  Stable ? Very stable

I give SpeedFan an Overall Rating of 4.5 out of 5 – This new version seems to have out done itself yet again with an even bigger and  better database of CPU’s , Motherboards and Graphics cards and GPU’s to detect from. SpeedFan yet again seems to load a little faster then the past (4.50) version. There are still a few things, I really would like to see in such as the ability to have SpeedFan load up during computer start-up. And the ability to check for updates with in the SpeedFan main UI.

5 Apps to Help You Organize your Home Life

June 22, 2016

Computer Desk

Technology permeates nearly every aspect of 21st century life. From business and industry to schools and even homes, electronic gadgets are essential for our daily routines. At Modernize, we think that families and homeowners can embrace the many benefits of technology in order to provide a coherent and organized home life. Here are 5 of the top apps to help you organize your life at home.

Kitchen assistants

Epicurious

Epicurious is a free iOS recipe app that allows you to access and store over 35,000 recipes from all over the Internet. More than just a standard recipe app, Epicurious has an intelligent kitchen timer function that tells you how long a particular ingredient will take to cook and offers voice control in Cook Mode to keep you hands free while cooking. A recipe app like this one will revolutionize your home life instantly.

Also recommended: KitchenMath

An inexpensive conversion app, KitchenMath is only $0.99 on iOS and takes the stress out of unit conversion and temperature conversion. A must if you cook often (and aren’t a fan of math).

Productivity/to-do lists

Wunderlist

Every functional home needs a way to keep track of tasks and lists. Wunderlist lets you create and edit shareable lists, syncing automatically as updates come in. You can also delegate tasks and subtasks to members of the family and add due dates and deadlines to particular items. The basic version of this app is perfect for family organization, but for $4.99 per month you can choose the Pro option with unlimited access and help your family business or freelance work get organized as well.

Also recommended: Evernote

If you want a free shareable note-taking app that also functions as a to-do list, Evernote is for you. Create and edit your own notes and files in and out of the application, share with your family, and access anywhere.

Finances

PocketGuard

Managing home finances is complicated to say the least, so make your budget management less stressful with PocketGuard, a free bank account tracker and budget management app. PocketGuard categorizes expenditures and funds, remembering your regular bills, loan payments, and debits so you don’t have to. The In My Pocket feature lets you track funds across all accounts and lets you know exactly how much money you have at any given time. Supporting all major US banks, this app will take complications out of bank balancing.

Also recommended: Wally

Wally is a free personal finance app that allows you to set financial goals, balance your budget, and save your data to iCloud while remembering your preferences and functioning as a smart (ie. learning) application.

Calendars

Fantastical 2

Perhaps even more important than to-do lists, a calendar app will become essential for your organized home life. Fantastical 2 is on the higher end of the price scale at $4.99, but its pleasant user interface and multiple calendar views take it from basic calendar to premium app instantly. This app also shows event location maps and lets you set reminders for particular events using predetermined parsers, dictations, and normal language. Like all good calendar apps, Fantastical 2 supports and syncs with other calendars so everyone can access your schedule.

Also recommended: iOS Calendar

If you don’t want to shell out for a calendar app (and if you and your family all use iOS devices), Apple’s Calendar app works perfectly well for shared calendars and event reminders and comes pre-installed on iOS devices.

For kids

iAllowance

Keep your kids’ finances all in one place with iAllowance, an allowance manager, chore chart, and reward app. Although it costs $3.99 to download, this app is easy to use and has an attractive chalkboard style UI. Create banks for any and all of your children’s funds, separating funds by child, and see transaction lists, give rewards, assign chores, and credit regular allowances. Parental controls and automatic syncing between devices will allow you and the other adults in your home keep control while letting your children safely see where their money is going.

Also recommended: Disney Movies Anywhere

Disney Movies Anywhere is a Disney subscription app that is free to download, letting you access your purchased Disney films from anywhere. Who doesn’t need a babysitter every once in awhile ?

Ghostery (6.0.0) – Mozilla FireFox Add-on Review

March 22, 2016

Ghostery (6.0.0)

A. Ease Of Use: 3.5/5 – Fairly easy to setup (But fairly difficult to understand what this add-on actually does). Just select what you want blocked. By checking off the box or boxes you want and your good to go.

B. Security: 4.5/5 – Ideally this add-on can pretty much cover all the Internet browsing protection you will need. (If setup correctly and paired with NoScript Firefox add-on.)

C. Usefulness: 5/5 – Ghostery sees the “invisible” web, detecting trackers, web bugs, pixels, and beacons placed on web pages by Facebook, Google Analytics, and over 600 other ad networks, behavioural data providers, web publishers – all companies interested in your activity.

D. FireFox Slowdown: Depends on the web page. But generally there is some mild to heavy lag (But will vary based on computer and Internet connection)

E. Computer Slow Down: No lag that I noticed. But FireFox does seem to use more memory faster. When Ghostery is active and in use.

F. Type Of User I Would Recommend To Use This Add-on: A more advanced Firefox user would find this add-on way more useful. Then a novice no doubt about that.

Auslogics Disk Defrag Free (6.1.2.0) – Freeware Review

March 8, 2016

Name: Auslogics Disk Defrag Free

Version: (6.1.2.0)

AA. Cost: Free

BB. Is Auslogic Disk Defrag Worth The Download ?: Yes, it is.

1. Ease Of Use – Super simple. There are basically 4 options Analyze , Defrag and Defrag & Optimize and Quick Defrag.

1A. Interface – I would hazard a guess at saying that this interface is idiot proof.

2. Quality Of Scan – Really fast, but often a little over inflated fragmentation rates wise.

2A. Speed Of Scan – Regular scan time for a 500 gig hard drive ranges anywhere from under 5 mins to around 2 hrs. The time it takes to defrag your hard drive. Does vastly depend on how fragmented your hard drive  is. And your system stats.

2B. Ease Of Reading The Final Report: Harder then one might expect.

3. Updating – When you check to see if there is an update. It will bring you to the Auslogic Disk Defrag website. Where if there is an update available. It will be a highlight in blue. You can then click on the link to download said new version and then install it to your PC.

4. Can You Run Other Programs During A Scan ? Yes

4A. Can You Run A Programs During An Update ? Yes

5. Is There A Progress Bar ? Yes

6. Can You Leave Auslogic Disk Defrag Running Without Issue ? Yes

7. Is There Adware Or Spyware Bundled With Auslogic Disk Defrag ? Yes, there is an optional toolbar. You can opt-out of.

8. Is Auslogic Disk Defrag Stable ? Yes

I give Auslogics Disk Defrag Free an overall score of 3.5 out of 5 – Auslogic Disk Defrag Free is a good Disk Defrag program. But no where near the best. Auslogic Disk Defrag Free can offers up whole number percentages such as 1% hard drive fragmentation rate. While other disk defragger programs can offer up a little more accurate read-outs to the last percentage point. (Such as a read out of 1.55% overall disk fragmentation rate)

Auslogic also seems to always round up the nearest whole percentage. Which often over inflates the need to defrag your hard drive.

ImTranslator (8.36) – Mozilla FireFox Add-on Review

February 6, 2016

ImTranslator (8.36)

A. Ease Of Use: 4/5 – A very easy and straight forward add-on, but there are still some settings that can get a bit tedious to newer Firefox users.

B. Security: Not Applicable To This Add-on

C. Usefulness: 4/5 – Both my life as a member of the (CSW) team and my life on the net would be a lot harder without this add-on. If you ever wondered how to say something in another language, or even if you just ran into a site and or blog that is not in your own native tongue / language.

D. FireFox Slowdown: At times this add-on can really slow down your browser.

E. Computer Slow Down: PC slowdown can occur on the very rare occasion. Often it will occur when you leave this add-on by accident with in your FireFox browser Window, or if you have been in a FireFox session for quite a while. And then you decide you want to translate a large swath of text.

F. Type Of User I Would Recommend To Use This Add-on: Any level of Firefox user could benefit from this add-on.

Very Important Firefox Add-on Compatibility Note: The add-on NoScript (NoScript Review Link) will cause this add-on to crash or not work at all. You will need to add  imtranslator.net to your NoScript White list, which can be found in your Firefox add-ons. Go to the NoScript add-on. Highlight it, then go to options. Go to second tab called whitelist then add imtranslator.net. Then press Allow, and you can then close Firefox, and re-load it. Then everything should be all good.
