What is a VPN ? And is Hotspot Shield safe to use ?

Matt’s Reply: Well first of all, lets answer the VPN question. VPN stands for, Virtual Private Network, and it extends a private network across a public network, like as the Internet. It enables a computer to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if it were directly connected to the private network, while benefiting from the functionality, security and management policies of the private network. The process is established via a virtual point-to-point connection through the use of dedicated connections, encryption, or a combination of the two.

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection across the Internet is similar to WAN (Wide Area Network) link between the sites. From a user perspective, the extended network resources are accessed in the same way as resources available from the private network. It also allow employees to securely access their company’s intranet while traveling outside the office. Similarly, VPNs securely and cost-effectively connect geographically disparate offices of an organization, creating one cohesive virtual network. VPN technology is also used by ordinary Internet users to connect to proxy servers for the purpose of protecting one’s identity.

Secondly, you asked if HotSpot Shield was safe, and I would have to say that it is 100% effective and safe, as I have used it myself to access content from North America and Japan, that is not available here in the UK, and I have never had a single issue with it. The use of HotSpot Shield is only as safe as the way you use your internet connection to browse content without the use of a Proxy Server.

As long as you are safe online using your standard internet connection, then using HotSpot Shield to connect to Proxy Servers around the world is completely safe and is a worthwhile program to include in your arsenal.
