Information Technology or “IT“- is defined by the Information Technology Association of America as the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems. IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and securely retrieve information.

    Wrong. IT stands for Internet Technology. The “Information Technology Association” mentioned above is a big ad that made up a different definition to fit the already existing acronym just to cash in. But it doesn’t really matter and no one cares anymore.

      While I typically like the spirit of statements like yours, I am an engineer and have been using networks since then early 80s. When things like Bulletin board systems (BBS) existed and having internal professional networks was consider big expensive thing. The IT term was used then. This was before the internet came to public use. I believe the internet technology only comes from the newer generation. Can you sure sources for your statement?

      The abbreviation IT predates the entire Internet, thus the (traditional) meaning is “Information Technology” which, when I was a pup in the 70’s, was understood as “all things computery.”
