World Clock & Widget (1.5.9) – Android App Review

April 23, 2014

World Clock & Widget (1.5.9)

Cost Of App: Free (Google Play App Store)

Is there a paid upgrade option ?: No

App Description: (See Below)

Simple and easy to use world clock application & widget.

If your location is missing, find a place in the same time zone & change the clock title:

(1) Find another city/location in the same time zone, and add it.
(2) Click on the new city and select “Edit Clock”.
(3) Rename the clock title & description and click on “OK”.

Features:

* Customizable widget background.
* Multiple clocks support.
* Quick search for locations.
* Displaying 12H or 24H clock format.
* Optional display of date

Are there in App ads ?: Yes, but only a very small random logo

A. Ease Of Use: 5/5 – Super simple. Select your desired location (AKA. Place like London or Time Zone like PST) Then decide if you wish to have a widget on your home screen or no widget and only have the clock in your Google apps list.

B. Security: No effect on Smart Phone or Tablet security.

C. Usefulness: 4/5 – Again only really useful if you intend to use it. If not it is just taking up space on your phone or tablet.

D. Smart phone Slowdown: None

E. Tablet Slowdown: None

f. Type Of User I Would Recommend To Use This App: Anyone who wants to keep track of different time zones other then there own. Then this is a very easy call to make. So go ahead and download it and don’t by accident call your mate at 3am his time. Because you were unaware of his time zone difference.

AVG Free Anti-Virus 2014 (2014.0.4569) – Freeware Review

April 23, 2014

The Rating Scale Breakdown:

  • 0  – 0.5 – Abysmal
  • 1.0 – 1.5 – Terrible
  • 2.0 – 2.5 – Poor
  • 3.0 – 3.5 – Average
  • 4.0 – 4.5 – Great
  • 5.0 – Excellent
  • Undetermined – Too soon to tell or lacking evidence to provide a solid answer
  • Not Tested – Has yet to be requested or there is some limitations to prevent accurate test results

————————–

Price: Free

A. Installation AVG4.5 Great” – There is no doubt that AVG has improved in this area 10 fold. I personally thank G-d that this time around it did not take more then once to install AVG Anti-Virus 2014. As oppose to AVG Anti-Virus 2013 that more then a dozen times to install on my PC’s. So well done AVG for getting it right this time. Better late then never.

B. Un-installing AVG 3.5Average” – AVG Free Anti-Virus 2014 is very sloppy un-installer. But that is not a surprise to me. So has every other previous AVG version going back 5 or 6 years.

————————–

C. Stability Of Program5.0 Excellent – The UI (User Interface) seems to have been completely fixed in AVG 2014. Along with the jenkey manual update option.

————————–

D. Has AVG Free Been Compromised By Hackers Or Virus4.5Great” – No reports of AVG being compromised.

E. Speed of Scan5.0 Excellent – Very quick on most computers.

F. Updating - 4.0Great” – Automatic updating is fine. But if you want to manually update your AVG. Expect some slowness.

G. Does AVG Free Do Automatic Updates By Itself Without Any Issue5.0 – Yes, you can now with, no doubt. But leave the manual update option alone unless you want to invite stability related issues.

H. Internet Browser Cookie Detection Rate And Removal Test – - You are way better off with something like SUPERAntiSpyware or CCleaner that is more dedicated to removal of Internet cookies. AVG Internet cookie detection rate is terrible even with the option active and checked off.

————————–

1. Anti-Virus Detection Rate Test:

1A. Windows XP4.0Great

1B. Windows Vista4.0Great

1C. Windows 74.0Great

1D. Windows 84.0Great

————————–

2. Residential Shield Test - 3.5Average – I still find SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware seems to grab the virus way before AVG does.

————————–

Computers Protection

————————–

3A. Anti-Virus Scanner 4.0Great” – AVG has finally beaten their just average score. And that should tell you a lot.

3B. Anti-Rootkit Scanner4.0Great” – Great option. Works well.

————————–

Web Browsing Protection

————————–

4A. Link Scanner4.5Great – Not a fan. But it can be very useful to some.

4B. Online Shield – Not available In the Free Version

————————–

Identity Protection

————————–

5A. Identity Protection - Not available In the Free Version

5B. Identity Alert – Not available In the Free Version

————————–

E-mail Protection

————————–

6A. E-mail Scanner3.0Average” – Utterly baseline and average. I found no use for it at all.

6B. Anti-Spam - Not available In the Free Version

————————–

Firewall

————————–

7. Firewall - Not available In the Free Version

————————–

Extra Features

————————–

8. Fix Performance (AKA. PC Analyzer) – 0.5Abysmal“- If you don’t mind that you only can fix your errors for free once then great. But if you are like me and you probably feel this options is both somewhat misleading and out right bait to buy this extremely expensive add-on. Then you are probably with me on my conclusion.

9. Mobile ProtectionN/A – This option is pretty much just a bullet point reminder. As you can download the AVG Free SmartPhone app from the Google Play Store.

10. File Shredder3.5 Average” – I found this addition to be very useful. But lacking what Spybot – Search & Destroy or even Advance System Care 7. Advanced File shredder options.

11. AVG Direct Support0.5Abysmal” – With only a free forum and a phone number to call for support.

You will often find yourself ether being told to go to the free forum or they will recommend you go to further specialized support via Tech Buddy. Which like I said above is an epic MONEY GRAB. Completely worthless as well as falsely advertised and overally misleading to users.

————————–

My Overall Score: 73/100

73 % = C +

————————–

My Final Verdict - AVG Free Anti-Virus 2014 takes what disappointed me with AVG 2013 and up the ante. It is still not AVG 2012 which seemed a lot smoother. Also again this appears to clearly tailored first to Windows 8 and then to Windows 7. If you don’t have ether. Then you maybe as disappointed as I was yet again.

AVG Anti-Virus FREE for AndroidProtection

D1. App(s) Protection5.0Excellent” – AVG will tell you is the app is rouge and not affiliated with the Android App store. It does an excellent job at this. Thus far it has warned me 3 times.

D2. Settings Protection5.0Excellent” – This option is very simple yet very important. It makes sure in your options to install and download apps of “unknown sources” will not be allowed to occur. Other then that super important job. I saw no other reason for this Protection option.

D3. Content Protection4.0Great” – This feature is by no means outstanding. But I have had a few “AD” detection’s. I’m assuming that means “AD”-ware. But I can’t be sure at this point.

————————–

E. Real Time Scanner5.0Excellent” – This feature works like a charm. You can ever see it in action.

E1. SD Card Scanner3.5Average- Nothing special here. This is pretty much an external SD card memory scanner.

E2. File Scanner5.0Excellent” - This feature works as expected.

E3. Safe Web Surfing3.5Average” – Nothing special here. No detentions or warning. I’m still unclear as to what this protection is suppose to do.

AVG Anti-Virus FREE for AndroidPerformance

F3. Data Usage4.0Great” – Great, if you are on a set data plan.

F4. Storage Usage4.5Great” – A really great option to check on both your Internal Memory and your SD card memory stats.

————————–

AVG Anti-Virus FREE for Android - Privacy

F. App LockerN/A – Not available in Free version

FF. App Backup - N/A – Not available in the Free version

F1. Wipe Device  (AKA. Factory Re-set) - 4.0Great” – Great tool for people who unwittingly corrupted their device.

F2. Wipe SD Card5.0Excellent” – Great for when you are upgrading your devices memory or if you wish to trade or sell your SD card.

————————–

AVG Anti-Virus FREE for Android - Anti-Thief

G. Anti-TheftNot Tested

————————–

H. Speed of Scan2.0 Poor” – Very slow. Even when I expect some limitations due to Smart phone system resources. This aspect has gone right down the tubes. I would of thought it would of gone the other way, FASTER. But nope not in this case at all even with just a .0.0.1 update.

I. Updating3.0Average – It needs to be updated manually and it won’t always update the first attempt.

J. AVG SupportNot Tested

————————–

My Overall Score: 82.5/100

82.5 % = A -

————————–

My Final Verdict -Part 1- The main difference with AVG Anti-Virus FREE Smart Phone App. Is that is it split into 4 different layers of protection.

The 1st layer would be your - Protection

1. Apps -This is where the scanner will pick up any rouge apps. That are not certified via the (Google Play App Store).

2. Content – This is where you’ll find out if you downloaded or transferred a virus on to your smart phone. Via Wi-Fi, USB or Bluetooth.

3. Settings – Is also very important and often overlooked when people first get their phone. Often there are settings with in setting that make your smart phone less then secure. Such as letting unknown or un-certified apps to collect your private data, Or transmitting your location without your permission (Also known as Geo-tagging).

The 2nd layer is the AVG Anti-Virus FREE Smart Phone App - Performance

1. Task Killer

2. Battery Consumption

4. Wipe Personal Data

5. Data Usage

6. Storage Usage

The 3rd layer is the AVG Anti-Virus FREE Smart Phone App - Anti-Theft

1. Device Locator

The 4th layer is the AVG Anti-Virus FREE Smart Phone App - Privacy

1. App Locker – Only 10 day limited trial

2. App Backup – Only 10 day limited trail

3. Wipe Device

4. Wipe SD Card

My Final Verdict -Part 2- Now performance wise. This is no watered down version of the full blow PC version of AVG. Yes, there are less options and scanning is a little slower. Due to mobile phone limitations. But other then that you get what you would expect. A rather good free Anti-Virus program.

**As per the norm it is highly recommend that you upgrade to the newest version of AVG Anti-Virus FREE Smart Phone App when available. Also important is to update your AVG virus definitions as often as possible. Which in the case of this App there are new virus definition updates (Nearly) everyday.

V. 6.5 CIObit Malware Fighter Pro Review Template + Windows 8 Tested

————————–

Price: $19.95 USD/CAD

A. Installation IObit Malware Fighter - 5.0 Excellent– Fast, Safe and Simple. With absolutely no issues in any of my tests

B. Un-installing IObit Malware Fighter – 5.0 Excellent – Fast, Safe and Simple. With absolutely no issues in any of our tests

————————–

C. Stability Of Program – 5.0 Excellent” – The issues I had with the previous version of IObit Malware Fighter has been patched. So we are all good now and 100% stable at least from our tests.

————————–

D. Detection Rate Test:

D1. Windows XP - 4.0 Good

D2. Windows Vista -4.0 Good

D3. Windows 7 -4.0 Good

D4. Windows 8 -4.0 Good

————————–

E. Speed of Scan - 5.0Excellent– Scan times for me came to nearly 1 hour after scanning about 2.5TB of data.

EE. Types Of Different Scans Available - 3.5 Average” – Program features 3 different scan types, which are Smart Scan (scans the most critical parts of the system), Full Scan (scans your entire system, including all of your files/folders), and Custom Scan (allows the user to choose which files, folders or section of the PC you want the program to scan).

F. Update Process -  3.5 Average The Pro version of this program features automatic updates – unlike the freeware version, which only has manual updates.

G. Scan Logs 2.0 Poor – The scan logs are really hard to find. I find the scan logs are super hard to read understand, But unfortunately, what stops this from getting a higher score. Is due to the process log which is rather hard to understand and rather messy, with no real user friendly-way of reading / understanding it.

————————–

1. Start-up Guard – 3.5Average– It’s very basic, and requires no work at all. It has scanned and found nothing.

2. Browser Guard - 3.5Average– Works very well, and has scanned a few items, with no detection’s found so far.

3. Network Guard - 3.5Average– It has found no detection’s on my network. Seems to do it’s job.

4. File Guard - 3.5Average – Works pretty well, and has found no detection’s so far.

5. Cookie Guard - 3.5Average– Like the rest in this section, it is very simple and perfect for the basic PC user, with no detection’s found thus far.

6. Process Guard – 3.5Average” – Also very simple, basic, and requires very little work. It’s found nothing thus far.

7. USB Disk Guard – 4.5Great” – Most of my files are secured on a 500 GB external hard drive or my many 8 to 32 gig USB flash sticks. That is connected to my Windows Vista desktop (On a mass rotation depending on what I am doing) and after scanning through all my USB drives and IObit Malware Fighter found some infected files. That I had put on a random USB stick to test this feature out.  So it does it’s job very well.

8. Malicious Action Guard - 3.5Average– Very basic and requires very little, or no work at all. It has alerted me to a number of registry changes.

————————–

H. Cloud Support - 3.0Average- I don’t think this is a good idea at all. That you can view the number of safe files and threats that IObit has found, and then that information is streamed over the cloud to your IObit Malware Fighter. Plus you can even join in and upload your own scan logs to the cloud on IObit’s servers, which allows everyone and not just IObit, but also other users to see what is safe and a threat via a percentage bar in green and red. I wouldn’t recommend using this feature for the security of your own PC’s sake.

I. IObit Support – 4.0Great- Just like in the Freeware version of the program, you have their “Virtual Technical Support” or “Community Forum“. But with the paid version you also get Online Support.

————————–

My Overall Score: 81/105

77.1 % = B +

————————–

My Final Verdict: IObit Malware Fighter Pro. Is a very simplistic program. Which is actually works in its favour. There are still no real out features (As of yet). IObit Malware Fighter preforms on almost every level as well as it’s competition.

Although there are three different scan levels to this program, it is recommended that you just stick to the Smart Scanning method and allow the program to run in the background while you get on with other daily tasks. All of the IObit Malware Fighter features such as Start-up Guard, Browser Guard, Network Guard, File Guard and Cookie Guard also work well and require no work on your behalf. As long as you keep the program running and definitions updated.

————————–

Important Program Side Note: IObit has decided to add this program to their already full freeware suite. Via their ACTION CENTER. Which you may have already noticed has now fully swallowed all but one of their freeware programs. And now has become their new UI (User Interface) for most IObit programs. Other then IObit Uninstaller. To tell you I am unhappy with this new development is an epic understatement. I hate having programs I want mate with programs, I don’t want. Just for the fact that they are made by the same company.

I much rather not have Advanced System Care Free at all on my computer. Instead I am forced by their new freeware suite. That sort of beats you over the head to have it installed and updated or face a more then annoying LARGE RED error message notice to “FIX ALL PROBLEMS/ERRORS“.

EE. Types Of Different Scans Available - 3.5 Average” – There are 3 different scan types. But they are the same scan types as pretty much every other program in this category.(Smart Scan , Full Scan, Custom Scan)

F. Update Process3.5 Average” – Needs to be manually updated.

G. Scan Logs2.0 Poor – The scan logs are really hard to find period. (Other then that minor issue). I find the scan logs are super hard to read understand, But unfortunately, what stops this from getting a higher score. I. IObit Support3.0 Average“- You have their “Virtual Technical Support” or “Community Forum

————————–

My Overall Score: 61.5/85

72.3 % = B

————————–

My Final Verdict: IObit Malware Fighter Free. Is a very basic  program with no real stand out features. That I can speak of. IObit Malware Fighter preforms on almost every level as well as it’s competition.

But what Malware Fighter does have are some extra features over other freeware programs of this type. IObit Malware Fighter has 5 active features / guards (Start-up Guard, Browser Guard, Network Guard , File Guard and Cookie Guard) That are available and active even in its freeware version package.

That alone makes IObit Malware Fighter better off features wise, then say Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free. Which only really has manual update and 3 manual scan options.

But not better off then say SuperAntiSpyware Free or Spybot – Search & Destroy Free.

————————–

Important Program Side Note: IObit has decided to add this program to their already full freeware suite. Via their ACTION CENTER. Which you may have already noticed has now fully swallowed all but one of their freeware programs. And now has become their new UI (User Interface) for most IObit programs. How Long Does It Take To Collect A Reward Or Cash Out: About half a months to 1 year. Doing all the surveys sent to you in full. It really does depend on your level of engagement and interest in Opinion Outpost.

Do They Spam You: No

Overall Rating: 3 out of 5Opinion Outpost seems to have smoothed out most of it’s rough edges. Most of the issues that plagued it during my last few review are not completely gone. They are still  have been some major hindrances in the overall difficulty of the surveys and qualifying for the rewards. I have often found myself in mid-survey. When I am kicked or glitch-ed out for no reason (What So Ever). I don’t even get the screen. That asks me if I want to try for an Instant Prize/Donate/ or Leave.

That is honestly a really rather sad situation. When we put in the time and effort into said survey. And are receiving ABSOLUTELY nothing in return, other then the run around or just really rather lame excuses why it is our fault. That to me is just unacceptable in every respect.

————————————

Extra Important Information: You must complete your full profile as well as update it at least once a year. To continue to receive your survey invites from Opinion Outpost. If you fail to do so, Opinion Outpost will just stop sending you survey invites to you without any warning at all.

Twitter (5.4.0) – Android App Review

April 12, 2014

Twitter (5.4.0)

Cost Of App: Free (Google Play App Store)

Is there a paid upgrade option ?: No

App Description: (See Below)

Twitter is a free app that lets you connect with people, express yourself, and discover more about all the things you love.

See what your favorite celebs and athletes are chatting about. Be the first to hear breaking news. Catch a glimpse behind the scenes at the Oscars, concerts, sporting events, and more.

Then join the conversation: Tweet your own text, photos, and video to your followers — and maybe make a few fans along the way.

Get inspired. Be social. Even send private messages to friends. All in real time, as big (and little) things happen, from anywhere you happen to be.

Are there in App ads ?: No

A. Ease Of Use: 4/5 – Super easy to use and set up. But (GUI) Graphical User Interface could use some tweaking. As it is overwhelming at times. A larger screen would help but not by much.

B. Security: No impact to smart phone or tablet security

C. Usefulness: 5/5 – Extremely useful and very easy to use. It has many useful features. All be it sometimes very hard to find all your options.

D. Smart phone Slowdown: Depends on the Smart phone. But I noticed that there can be some serious lag.

E. Tablet Slow Down: No lag, that I noticed.

F. Type Of User I Would Recommend To Use This App: I would recommend this app to anyone who wants to stay connected remotely to Twitter. This gets a MEGA recommend if you are the type of person not using their Desktop or Laptop as much anymore. Just make sure you lock up you tablet or Smart Phone with a good strong password.
