X-notifier (3.3.1) – Mozilla FireFox Add-on Review

May 25, 2013

X-notifier (3.3.1)

A. Ease Of Use: 5/5 – Very easy to setup multiply e-mail accounts. On any of several different free mail services. Such as Hotmail/Outlook, AOL, Yahoo, Outlook, Gmail and many many more.

B. Security: (Very Un-secure) – It gives you a by-pass of all your passwords and usernames. Not recommended for shared and or public computers or for high security e-mail accounts. (I would also avoid any public Wi-Fi hotspots as well.)

BB. Other Important Security Information:  Just remember your E-mail account passwords and usernames are viewable in the FireFox Options. Under SecuritySaved Passwords

C. Usefulness: 3/5 – If you are lazy like me or have a really bad memory go for it. Just remember. You are at an SEVERELY ELEVATED risk of your e-mail account(s) being hacked and or hijacked. Due to how easy it is to find and copy your usernames and passwords.

D. FireFox Slowdown: Very minimal for most computers

E. Computer Slow Down: None

F. Type Of User I Would Recommend To Use This Add-on: I would only recommend this add-on for people who are unable to use e-mail without assistance.

**If you are good with the Internet and free e-mail accounts such as Hotmail/Outlook, Gmail, Yahoo and have a good memory. Please try to avoid this potentially massive security risk to your e-mail security and any sensitive data stored there-in.

Ghostery (2.9.4) – Mozilla FireFox Add-on Review

May 18, 2013

Ghostery (2.9.4)

A. Ease Of Use: 3.5/5 – Fairly easy to setup (But fairly difficult to understand what this add-on actually does). Just select what you want blocked. By checking off the box or boxes you want and your good to go.

B. Security: 4.5/5 - Ideally this add-on can pretty much cover all the Internet browsing protection you will need. (If setup correctly and paired with NoScript)

C. Usefulness: 5/5 – Ghostery sees the “invisible” web, detecting trackers, web bugs, pixels, and beacons placed on web pages by Facebook, Google Analytics, and over 600 other ad networks, behavioral data providers, web publishers – all companies interested in your activity.

D. FireFox Slowdown: Depends on the web page. But generally there is some mild to heavy lag (But will vary based on computer and Internet connection)

E. Computer Slow Down: No lag that I noticed. But FireFox does seem to use more memory faster. When Ghostery is active and in use.

F. Type Of User I Would Recommend To Use This Add-on: A more advanced Firefox user would find this add-on way more useful. Then a novice no doubt about that.

WOT -Web Of Trust- (20130402) – Mozilla FireFox Add-on Review

May 11, 2013

WOT -Web Of Trust- (20130402)

A. Ease Of Use: 3/5 – Very easy to use. But very deceptive reporting practices overall.

B. Security: 3/5 - You will be more secure no doubt. But at what cost.

In the end it comes down to TRUST. Do you trust WOT (Web Of Trust) reporting of websites ? Or would you rather use one of the dozens of other link scanners out there.

C. Usefulness: 3/5 – The usefulness of WOT will depend on what you want to get out of it. I would highly recommend this to parents with younger kids. It is a very easy teaching tool to use with your kids (our even yourself). To try to figure out the basics of what sites to click on and what to more or less avoid.

For me as an advanced Internet user. I find it more annoying then anything. I also know some sites I go to. Don’t get the scores they deserve or don’t get approved at all.

D. FireFox Slowdown: There is still some lag (But will vary based on computer and Internet connection)

E. Computer Slow Down: No lag that I noticed. But FireFox does seem to use up more memory faster. When WOT is active and in use.

F. Type Of User I Would Recommend To Use This Add-on: Parents with kids or people new to the Internet.

As I suggested above. WOT is helpful at first. But after awhile people tend to get annoyed with it and turn it off. Also important to note is that more advanced users are more likely not to need this add-on at all. As they are well aware of what sites safe and what sites to avoid.

Firefox does a pretty good job at putting up (gateways and or portals) to sites that have been reported to Firefox as potentially dangerous. But often by the time that comes up it is to late for the end user.

NoScript (2.6.6) – Mozilla FireFox Add-on Review

May 4, 2013

NoScript (2.6.6)

A. Ease Of Use: 3/5 – Not as easy as it should be.

Often people just end up getting very frustrated with this add-on. Which often results in the person deactivating and or un-installing this add-on. But for the people who stick around long enough. End up having a very powerful tool to help stem the tide of pop-ups , banner ads and other Internet annoyances.

B. Security: 4/5 - NoScript is very helpful in securing your computer from a lot of seen and unseen Internet threats. All across the net during your day to day activities. This add-on will not impede your security. Instead it will boost it, if used correctly.

C. Usefulness: 5/5 – NoScript has enhanced my life on the net. By giving me more options to control my day to day Internet experience.

D. FireFox Slowdown: There is some lag (But will vary based on computer stats and your Internet connection)

E. Computer Slow Down: Some minor lag on older computers.

F. Type Of User I Would Recommend To Use This Add-on: A more advanced Firefox user, would find this add-on way more useful. Then a novice.

QuickWiki (1.1.2) – Mozilla FireFox Add-on Review

April 20, 2013

QuickWiki (1.1.2)

A. Ease of use: 4/5 – It’s pretty straight to the point. Just right-click a word while shift / ctrl / alt to quickly lookup anything in Wiktionary and or Wikipedia, without the need to open any new tabs.

B. Security – Absolutely No Impact On FireFox Security Or PC Security

C. Usefulness: 3/5 – Provided it does not crash your Firefox browser first. You will have a very quick reference tool. Without having to keep going back to the main Wikipedia pages.

D. FireFox Slowdown: Quite a bit.

E. Computer Slow Down: Some jenkey-ness

F. Type Of User I Would Recommend To Use This Add-on: Moderate skilled FireFox user

Adblock Plus (2.2.3) – Mozilla FireFox Add-on Review

April 13, 2013

Adblock Plus (2.2.3)

A. Ease Of Use: 5/5 – Super easy to use

B. Security: 4.5/5 - Adblock Plus is really good at what it does. Which is block a large number or ads. From banners to pop-up ads and nag screen while surfing the net using this add-on. I was shocked at how many I was running into before I installed and activated this add-on. I would have to say you mix this with the add-on NoScript and you basically have an almost perfect storm. In combating most of your Internet woes and annoyances. When it comes to most forms of Internet ads.

It’s not perfect.  It will not protect you from all forms of Internet ads. Nor will it completely protect you from pop-up ads or viruses. And lastly in the extremely rare cases it may cause some websites not to properly load. Such as survey sites and some download sites. But again that is extremely rare. But I wanted to mention it, as it can occur.

C. Usefulness: 5/5 – I’ll keep this simple. Once you go with Adblock Plus. You won’t want to go back surfing the net without it installed and active.

D. FireFox Slowdown: There maybe some website that may load at a slower pace. Or you may encounter “Very brief pauses while the ads are being blocked / deflected.

E. Computer Slow Down: No lag, that I noticed.

F. Type Of User I Would Recommend To Use This Add-on: I would advise any Firefox user annoyed with any type of Internet ad. To just give this add-on 1 full Firefox Internet surfing session and I can bet you won’t be disappointed.

ImTranslator (5.2) – Mozilla FireFox Add-on Review

March 23, 2013

ImTranslator (5.2)

A. Ease Of Use: 4/5 – A very easy and straight forward add-on. But there are still some settings that can get a bit tedious to newer users.

B. Security: Not Applicable To This Add-on

C. Usefulness: 4/5 – Both my life as a member of the (CSW) team and my life on the net would be a lot harder without this add-on. If you ever wondered how to say something in another language. Or even if you just ran into a site and or blog that is not in your own native tongue / language.

D. FireFox Slowdown: At times this add-on can really slow down  your Firefox

E. Computer Slow Down: PC slowdown can occur on the very rare occasion. Often it will occur if you leave on this add-on active with in the FireFox browser. Or if you have been in a Firefox session for quite a while and then decide you want to translate a large swath of text.

F. Type Of User I Would Recommend To Use This Add-on: Any level of Firefox user. Could benefit from this add-on.

Very Important Firefox Add-on Compatibility Note: The add-on NoScript will cause this add-on to crash or not work at all. You will need to add  imtranslator.net to your NoScript White list. Which can be found in your Firefox add-ons. Go to the NoScript add-on. Highlight it. Then go to options. Go to second tab called Whitelist then add imtranslator.net. Then press Allow. Then close Firefox. then re-load up Firefox and you should be good.

SpeedFan (4.49) – Freeware Review

March 21, 2013

1. What Does SpeedFan Do ? SpeedFan monitors your CPU, Mother Board, Hard-drives and internal fans and even your graphic card or cards (as well as GPU’s) and gives you an easy to use temperature read out. Both in your system tray and via your Vista sidebar (If you have it running) with the correct up to date sidebar widget. So you can tell how hot your computer is running and to curb any possible damage. As well as to improve your overall system performance.

2. Ease Of Use – SpeedFan is very easy to use because all you need to do is install it and you are good to go. In most cases SpeedFan will auto-detect most CPU’s, Motherboards and Graphics Cards. There has yet to be a computer thus far that has not detected all or most of the internal components.

3. Interface - Very simple SpeedFan has a few easy to use tabs and that is pretty much it. SpeedFan is by no means fancy, but that is how I like it. Simple and to the point with no pointless filler. Dragging it down.

4. Can You Leave SpeedFan Running Without Issue ? Yes, you can no doubt

5. Is There Any Adware Or Spyware Bundled With SpeedFan ? No

6. Is SpeedFan  Stable ? Very stable

I give SpeedFan an Overall Rating of 4.5 out of 5 – This new version seems to have out done itself yet again with an even bigger and  better database of CPU’s , Motherboards and Graphics cards and GPU’s to detect from. SpeedFan yet again seems to load a little faster then the past (4.47) version. There are still a few things, I really would like to see in such as the ability to have SpeedFan load up during computer start-up. And the ability to check for updates with in the SpeedFan main UI.
