AVG Free Anti-Virus 2011 Version (10.0.1209) – Freeware Review

April 13, 2011

The Results Breakdown:

Passed – Did well in all of our tests

Acceptable – Could go ether way. But in most cases AVG passed

Failed – AVG did not work at all or only worked 1 out of 10 times we ran the test

Undetermined – Too soon to tell or lacking evidence to provide a solid answer

Not Tested – Has yet to be requested or there is some limitations to prevent accurate test results

————————–

A. Stability Of ProgramAcceptable – We have received a VERY LARGE NUMBER of e-mails about the lack of stability with AVG 2011 free and paid with both installation and long term use.

DISCLAIMER: No one thus far who works for the The Computer Savvy Weblog has had any issues with AVG 2011 Free or Paid. But we will let you know if that does occur.

————————–

B. Has AVG Free Been Compromised By Hackers Or VirusPassed – No issues reported

C. Speed of ScanPassed – Very quick on most computers. And now you have the option to choose how much Memory/Ram you want each scheduled scan to take up.

D. Does AVG Free Do Automatic Updates By Itself Without Any IssuePassed – Yes, but there seems to be on occasion to be issues with hanging and or stalling out, when manually updating your AVG.

E. Internet Browser Cookie Detection Rate And Removal TestAcceptable - You are way better off with something like SUPERAntiSpyware or Spybot. AVG Internet cookie detection rate is terrible even with the option actived and checked off. But it does seem to be getting a little better with each update.

————————–

1. Anti-Virus Detection Rate Test:

1A. Windows XPPassed

1B. Windows VistaPassed

1C. Windows 7Passed

————————–

2. Anti-SpywareFailed – AVG still seems to miss very common and not so common spyware/adware. You are much better off with SUPERAntiSpyware or Spybot as your adware, spyware, malware protection.

3. One Click FixPassed – I really like this idea. But I am not a fan, of the idea fact that if I want to de-activated a service. Such as the Link Scanner, that AVG should still show as not being fully protected. But that just might be me.

4. Link Scanner - Passed - Not a fan. But it can be very very useful to some.

5. Safe Search - Passed - I love this option and find it very very useful for all thous people that are unsure about certain websites.

6. AVG ToolBarFailed - This toolbar causes browser crashes of Firefox and other such Internet browsers on a regular bases. And it is really hard to un-install. We also noticed it caused some strange behavior when dealing with WordPress.

7. AVG SideBar GadgetFailed – I don’t really see the point of it and it is super bulky. (Taking up way to much space) And + I already have my side bar full of way more useful widgets/gadgets.

8. Residential Shield TestAcceptable – I still find AVIRA and AVAST seems to grab the virus way before AVG free does. But there is indeed some major overall improvements here.

9. E-Mail Scanner - Acceptable - I already have e-mail protection from another program. + I find it is way more difficult to set-up then it needs to be.

10. Update ManagerPassed – No issues here at all. And it even update faster then past AVG versions, such as 8.5 and 9.0.

11. Anti-RootKitFailed – 100% useless no detection during any of OUR MANY TESTS

12. PC AnalyzerMassive Epic Fail - If you don’t mind that you only can fix your errors for free once then great. But if you are like me and you probably feel this options is both somewhat misleading and out right bait to buy this extremely expensive add-on.

13. Identity ProtectionUndetermined – I really love this whole Idea. But I am just really unsure how to test this feature properly. On the bright side of things Identify Protection seems to have plenty of informations to displays for you and overall seems very comprehensive. But I am just a little overwhelmed as how to use such information.

————————–

Overall Rating: 8 Passed, 4 Acceptable, 6 Failed, 1 Undetermined, 0 Not tested (Total # of tests done 20)

————————–

My Final Verdict Part 1: There is absolutely no real difference that I could see in this very minor version update of AVG Free Anti-Virus 2011. So feel free to just read my last review (AVG Free Anti-Virus 2011 -10.0.1204-) as it is the same review as this one. (Other then AVG changed from a Failed grade to a Passing grade under SECTION B “Has AVG Free Been Compromised By Hackers Or Virus“)

My Final Verdict Part 2: It appears I as well as Kirbe have lost our love for AVG. But anyways regardless of the review above.

**I still want to strongly suggest you upgrade your AVG if you are running any of the older versions of AVG such as 8.0, 8.5 or 9.0. I would say at least give it a go and see if you like it. If you don’t you can always switch to AVIRA or AVAST.

SUPERAntiSpyware (4.50) Professional Edition – Software Review

April 13, 2011

AA. Cost: $29.95 USD  For A LIFETIME Subscription For Up To 3 Users/PC’s

BB. Is SUPERAntiSpyware Worth The Price ?: Yes it is. If you want the full protection with the added benefits of Automatic Updating, Scheduling Scanning and Real-Time Protection. Then you will be more then happy with the one time $19.95 USD price point for A LIFETIME Subscription to SUPERAntiSpyware Professional.

1. Ease Of Use – One of the easiest straight to the point programs. I have had the pleasure of  reviewing.

1A. Interface - Very clean and old school looking. With 5 very simple one click buttons.

2. Quality Of Scan – Super fast and super accurate. No matter what scan options you are using.

3. Updating – Incredibly Fast

4. Can You Run Other Programs While Running A Scans ? Yes

4A. Can You Run Programs During The Update Process ? Yes

5. Is There A Progress Bar Or % Done ? No not as of yet (But I predict we will see something in the upcoming 5.0 build of “SAS”)

6. Can You Leave SUPERAntiSpyware Running. With Little Or No Issue ? Yes, you can. But on the very rare occasion SUPERAntiSpyware will require you to reboot your PC. In order to remove some of the more difficult malware, spyware, adware and or cookies on your computer (This is now an incredibly RARE occurrence.)

7. Is There Any Adware Or Spyware Bundled With SUPERAntiSpyware ? Absolutely not

8. Is SUPERAntiSpyware Stable ? Yes, 100%

—————————————————–

Overall score for SUPERAntiSpyware Professional Edition is a 4.5 out of 5 – SUPERAntiSpyware is very easy and safe to use for all level of users. Regardless of background knowledge of computers and or the Internet. SUPERAntiSpyware may look simple and old school to some. But don’t let that fool you SUPERAntiSpyware has plenty of power under it’s hood.

SUPERAntiSpyware (4.50) Free Edition – Freeware Review

April 12, 2011

Pro’s

- It’s 100% free

- Very small installation file (Only 10.00 MB)

- Both 32 bit and 64 bit versions are available to download

- VERY VERY easy to install and un-install if need be

- Very simple to use

- Very stable

- Overall detection rate has vastly improved since the (4.45) version of SuperAntiSpyware

- Has way less limitations then most other freeware versions

- Way better then it’s other freeware competition

- Very simple interface with 5 easy to use one press buttons

- Very light on resources (Both Ram and CPU) generally on most computers you’ll see under 50% CPU, RAM usage after only 1 to 5 mins (After initial start up of any of the 3 scan options scan -Quick Scan, Complete Scan or Custom Scan-)

- Really fast and accurate scanning

- Very quick updating

- Internet Explorer Browser Hi-Jack Protection

Con’s

- No automatic updating

- No real time protection

- No Mozilla FireFox browser support (But there is no doubt in my mind there will be in the up coming 5.0 version of SUPERAntiSpyware)

- No Chrome browser support (But there is no doubt in my mind there will be in the up coming 5.0 version of SUPERAntiSpyware)

- Can’t use the scan scheduler

-  On the very rare occasion SUPERAntiSpyware will require you to reboot your PC. In order to remove some of the more difficult malware, spyware, adware and or cookies on your computer (No longer as big of an issues as past versions of SUPERAntiSpyware)

—————————————————————

Overall I give SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition a 4 out of 5 – SUPERAntiSpyware is very very effective even in it’s freeware version package. You are not choked to death with too many stupid software limitations. Like so so many other freeware programs out there now. You can still update SUPERAntiSpyware and you can still use its different scanning options (minus of course the scan scheduler option). The only 2 very minor downsides that I can see are that you have to manually scan and manually update SuperAntiSpyware yourself. (For most people this is not even a very big deal. Because we already do it anyways with other freeware programs such as Spybot.)

**Honestly freeware programs can’t get much better then this. It’s a must have for any PC owner whether you are tech guru or just a novice.

AVG Internet Security 2011 (10.0.1209) – Full Review

April 9, 2011

The Results Breakdown:

Passed – Did well in all of our tests

Acceptable – Could go ether way. But in most cases AVG passed

Failed – AVG did not work at all or only worked 1 out of 10 times we ran the test

Undetermined – Too soon to tell or lacking evidence to provide a solid answer

Not Tested – Has yet to be requested or there is some limitations to prevent accurate test results

————————–

Price: $54.99 USD

A. Installation AVGAcceptable – Slower then AVG claims and we have a number of e-mails about blue and black screens of death.

B. Un-installing AVGAcceptable – Way slower then most other anti-virus programs.

——————–

——————-

D. Speed of ScanPassed – Very quick on most computers. Also now you can decide how much memory you want to take up during each system scan.

E. Has AVG Free Been Compromised By Hackers Or VirusAcceptable – AVG Internet Security 2011 has not been compromised or disabled. But a few minor viruses were missed. That were then picked up after a full system scan.

F. Internet Browser Cookie Detection Rate And Removal TestAcceptable - Getting better. But you are way better off with SUPERAntiSpyware or CCleaner to remove your Internet cookies.

G. Does AVG Free Do Automatic Updates By Itself Without IssuePassed – Yes, no issues reported this time around

————————–

**. One Click FixPassed – I really like this idea. But I am not a fan of the idea that if I want to de-activated a service. Such as the Link Scanner that AVG should still show it as not being fully protected.

————————–

1. Anti-Virus Detection Rate Test -

1A. Windows XP - Passed

1B. Windows VistaPassed

1C. Windows 7Passed

————————–

2. Anti-SpywareFailed – AVG seems to miss common and not so common spyware. You are much better off with SUPERAntiSpyware or Spybot.

3. Anti-Spam - Acceptable - GMail has better spam mail protection for free.

4. FireWall - Acceptable — There are way too many programs on the AVG Whitelist. I hardly even see a detection. There should be a promoted when installing or un-install a program not yet approved by you. And or when a program tries to connect to the Internet.

5. Link Scanner - Passed - Can be very very useful to some.

6. Safe Search - Passed - I love this option and it’s very very useful for all thous people. That want extra safe guards while surfing unknown sites.

7. AVG ToolBarFailed - Not a fan of any toolbars. The AVG toolbar is way to hard to get rid of. It also seems to slow down most Internet browsers.

8. AVG SideBar GadgetPassed – Love it and have it on both my Vista and Win 7 sidebars. But it is way to large.

9. Residential Shield TestAcceptable – I find that AVIRA still seems to grab the virus way before AVG does.

10. E-Mail Scanner - Not Tested - I already have e-mail protection from another program. + I find it is overly way more difficult then it needs to be.

11. Update ManagerPassed – AVG seems to update with no issues.

12. Online Shield - Undetermined – Still not really sure how really effective this option is.

13. Anti-Root KitAcceptable – I love the separate Root Kit scanning option. But it seems to be lacking in the detection aspect which is were it really counts. It works but does a really half ass-ed job. As compared to built in root kit scanner in both AVIRA or AVAST.

14. System ToolsAcceptable – Great idea but very poorly execution. Now the information is there but it is very very hard to decipher even for the more Computer Savvy of us.

15. PC AnalyzerFailed – If you don’t mind that you only can fix your errors for free once then great. But if you are like me and you probably feel this options is both somewhat misleading and out right bait to buy this extremely expensive add-on.

** On a side note I fully expected with the paid version of AVG Internet Security 2011. That the PC Analyzer would be an included as a usable option.

————————–

Overall Rating: 9 Passed, 10 Acceptable, 3 Failed, 2 Undetermined, 1 Not Tested (Total # of tests done 25)

————————–

My Final Verdict Part 1: There is absolutely no real difference that I could see in this very minor version update of AVG Internet Security 2011. So feel free to just read my last review (AVG Internet Security 2011 Version -10.0.1204-) as it is the same review as this one. Minus a few minor format changes and some grammar and spelling updates.

**Now if you have not read my last review (AVG Internet Security 2011 Version -10.0.1204-). Please feel free to READ ON. Because it basically says the same thing word for word as my last review.

My Final Verdict Part 2: I have lost my love for AVG it appears. There is also the fact that there are not many overwhelming differences. That I can see between AVG Internet Security 2011 and AVG Free Anti-Virus 2011 to get me to recommend the almost $60 USD price tag. But I still highly recommend it if you don’t already have another virus program or you have the older AVG paid program. I would highly recommend that you at least upgrade to the newer AVG 2011 (Regardless of what I said in the above review. You are indeed still better off with the AVG 2011 version. As compared to AVG 8.5 or 9.0 versions).

If you still want to try AVG Internet Security 2011. Then I highly recommend the trailware version of AVG Internet Security 2011 first. Before you decide you want to buy it out right. That way you will know what you are getting into and won’t have any mis-conceptions of what AVG Internet Security 2011 does and does not do.

**Lets hope that the next AVG product update improves on what could be very promising program moving forward.

EPD 36: Fan Mail Friday’s (04/08/2011)

April 8, 2011

Dear Remy and Team,

I was wondering if there is any chance that we may see an updated Text Message And Chat Room Short Form Dictionary (Letters A-Z) -Ver. 2.0- ? or maybe even an updated version of AVG Issues and Fixes for the new AVG Free 2011 ? Being published any time soon.

Sent in By Feature Preacher

—————————-

Reply: Both are very good questions “Feature Preacher”. At this point all I can say is. I have started work on the AVG Issues and Fixes for the new AVG Free 2011. But I am pretty far from posting it on the site.

Now about an updated version of our current “Text Message And Chat Room Short Form Dictionary (Letters A-Z) -Ver. 2.0-“. Well on that subject….we have done very minor updates over the past few months. But nothing too big enough to give it a 2.5 or 3.0 version code.

But to answer your question fully. No we don’t have any plans at this time. But the more interest that you guys show us. The more likely it will happen at a faster pace.  (Hint Hint) :)
