Auslogics Disk Defrag (3.1.8.50) – Freeware Review

August 21, 2010

Dear Readers,

Here is my full review on Auslogics Disk Defrag (3.1.8.50)….

AA. Cost: Free

BB. Is it worth that cost ?: Yes unless you have “raided hard-drives”

1. Ease of use – Super simple there are basically 3 options Analyze , Defrag and Defrag & Optimize

1a. Interface - This version has way more colour to it. Then that of the older versions of this program I have reviewed in the past. Also important to note is the super simple direct to the point options available. I would hazard a guess at saying this is idiot proof. But every time I say that I get an e-mail a day later saying it screwed up their system or caused a conflict.

2. Quality of scan – Extremely accurate and faster then pretty much any program free Disk Defrag program out there. Even faster then Smart Defrag.

2A. Speed of scan – Regular scan time for a 500 gig hard drive ranges from under 5mins to about 1hr 45mins.

2B. Ease of reading the final report: Harder then you might expect

3. Updating – If there is an update it does it pretty quickly

4. Can you run other programs during the scan ? Yes

4A. Can you run programs during update ? Yes

5. Is there a progress bar ? Yes

6. Can you leave it running and it will run with out issue ? Yes

7. Is there adware or spyware bundled with it ? nope, not that I saw

8. Is it stable ? Yes

I give Auslogics Disk Defrag an overall score of 4.5 out of 5 - Other then some issues with raided hard-drives and a hard to understand end of scan report read-out. The rest of this program is stellar and a most have for any computer savvy user. And that goes double for any Windows Vista users out there. That are miffed about the terrible disk defrag that comes with their computer.

EPD 3: Fan Mail Friday’s (8/20/2010)

August 20, 2010

Dear Remy,

I have been following Computer Savvy for quite sometime now and I am a fan for sure. But anyways Remy I have been wondering why most of the posts on the site are listed under your name Remy “Se7en”. Even when they are not written by you.

Thanks for all the hard work :). And Remy can I ask you but one more favor ?

Can this be posted as your next Fan Mail Friday’s Feature ?

Mark W.

—————————-

Reply:  First off Mark since you asked so nicely. It would be my pleasure to post your e-mail as this weeks Fan Mail Friday’s Feature.

Now about your comment……….

Well Mark I am actually happy you asked that question. The main reason for my name to appear on most of the posts is becuase there are only 4 high level admins. Which would be Ding Dong Danny, Mattyblog, Raven and Myself  (Remy “Se7en”). But saying that there are more then 20 members of  The Computer Savvy Weblog (CSW). Some of which are not listed for varies reasons.

But when there is a post written by someone other then myself. You should notice I will always credit that person in the post (Even if my name appears as posted by). That being said that does not make that author any less important then myself.

1 good example of that would be Nico’s very popular Just Answer Scam Watch Feature.

AVG Free Anti-Virus Version (9.0.851) – Full Review

August 19, 2010

Results Breakdown:

Passed – Did well in all the tests

Acceptable – Could go ether way…but in most cases it passed

Failed – Did not work at all or only worked 1 out of 10 times

Not Tested – Has yet to be requested or there is some limitations to prevent accurate test results

Undetermined – Too soon to tell or lacking evidence to provide a solid answer

——————————————————————————————–

Stability of ProgramPassed – No issues with stability at all this time around

Number of times that AVG Free has been compromised by Hacker or VirusPassed – A clean bill of health so far

Speed of ScanPassed – Keeps on getting a little faster with each new patch/update. The same goes for this version.

Does AVG Free do automatic updates by itself without issuePassed – Yes, even thou I have had reports of a few .BIN files errors. But they tend to fix themselves out.

Residential Shield TestAcceptable – The same results this time around. AVIRA seems to still be better then AVG Free at picking up the virus before initial infections has already occurred.

Internet Browser Cookie Detection and Removal TestPassed - There is a very slight increase in detection rate over the old (9.0.839) version.

Spyware/AdwareFailed – There is no surprise here. AVG Free seems to miss pretty much every type of Spyware or Adware we tested it against. We still feel that saying AVG Free is also a adware/spyware program as well as a virus program is a hard pill to swallow. At least at this point in AVG Free development. I would stick to a dedicated program such as Spybot – Search and destroy or SUPERAntiSpyware. Instead of trusting your computer to be fully protected with just AVG Free alone.

Root Kit Detection Rate - Passed – No problems here

Win 7/ Vista / XP Virus detection rate test – Win 7 Passed /Vista Passed / XP Passed -  Across the board the detection rate has remained the same.

Link Scanner/ Safe SearchAcceptable – I found no real good reason to use this option. But it seems a few of my membership swear by this option as a must have. (But I still personally find it slows down what ever browser you are using)

E-mail scannerAcceptable – I still feel the e-mail scanner is way more of a hassle, then being of any use.

————————–

Overall Rating: 9 Passed, 3 Acceptable, 1 Failed, 0 Undetermined, 0 Not tested (Total # of tests done 13)
