Repeated Hack Attempts On Windows Live Messenger Accounts Are Now Increasing Weekly

February 27, 2010

Dear Readers,

Now You Can Follow The Computer Savvy Weblog Via Twitter: http://twitter.com/Computer_Savvy

Ok, just to catch everyone up last week in my Scam Watch feature called Scam Watch: Tips To Keep Your Windows Live Messenger Free From Hacker. I talked about a huge increase in bot attacks on everyday users of Windows Live Messenger (Instant Messenger program)

Now I unfortunately have to say it has gotten so bad that my whole crew of 26 people, that would include myself as well. Have been getting attacked up to 3 times a day. Provided of course we are running said program….

The attacks are bots related and are not real people. So they are still at the stupid stage and not at all professional hacker grade yet….

—————————

Q: How Do I Know If It Is a Bot Attack ?

A: You get a friend add request with a 4 letter name and with 4 or more numbers in the MSN name such as Len23456766@hotmail.com

——————-

Q: What Should I Do If I Get A Request In The Above Format ?

A: First off decline there invitation , then block them..and if you are so inclined report them to Microsoft..but that does not do much….

—————————-

Q: Should I Change My Password ?

A: First thing, that is up to you. But I personally would, if I were in you your shoes and since I was…..I go for it…..

Dear Readers,

Now You Can Follow The Computer Savvy Weblog Via Twitter: http://twitter.com/Computer_Savvy

Ok, so there has been an update to Skype and this would be version (4.2.0.152) for of us that are keeping track. This update does not appear to be a huge improvement from my very limited testing so far.

New in this version

  • Skype Access – access WiFi hotspots the easy way with your Skype Credit.
  • Call transfer – transfer calls to a Skype contact or a mobile or landline.
  • Updated call quality guide with pre-call soundcheck.
  • Bug fixes.

Download.com Confuses Users With A Lot Of Inaccurate File Added On Dates

February 24, 2010

Dear Readers,

Now You Can Follow The Computer Savvy Weblog Via Twitter: http://twitter.com/Computer_Savvy

I’m not sure if like my you guys have noticed more then a few files description on my favorite download site download.com. Are more then a little off when it comes to files were added on _________ date. Even brand new versions of programs still seem to read 2009. Instead of the real date of 2010 and it is not only 1 or 2 files ether. There are more then I can count….it seems and that is not even the whole picture, some files have both the wrong year and the wrong month.

Not sure if the staff @ download.com have even have noticed or it is just an upgrade issue. From when they changed the look of the site a little while back. Regardless it is starting to really get annoying for us and I hope it gets fixed soon.

Well I held off as long as I could cuss I am not a huge fan of passing off news. When all it is really is a rant, besides I’m sure Danny it is only a matter of time before it shows up in Danny’s “WTF” feature.

Sony Connect -SonicStage- (4.3.01.14050) – Software Review

February 22, 2010

Now You Can Follow The Computer Savvy Weblog Via Twitter: http://twitter.com/Computer_Savvy

Con’s

- Very Slow Loading up User Interface

- Sometimes can take longer then expected to transfer songs

- Sometimes songs get corrupted

- Sometimes songs will be transfered into wrong format for your Mp3 player to play

Pro’s

- Free

- Easy to find and download

- Pretty easy to use

- Files are easy to organize

- Playlists are automatically saved as a temp files on your computer. Which will load up once you click on the program

- Very easy to back-up your music

- Very light on resources after interface load up time (Both Ram and CPU)

- Supports a lot of different types of files

—————————————————————

Overall I give SonicStage  a 2 out of 5 – This program for me is a necessary evil because of my really out of date Mp3 player. It is the only program I could find that would work every time I used it. The program is slow and asked you to connect to the net to verify your Mp3′s, which I found out can corrupted them..but that aspect depends on where you get your Mp3s some sources register as real legit Mp3s other don’t…

Here Is The Link To Download SonicStage: http://download.cnet.com/Sony-Connect-SonicStage/3000-2141_4-10375164.html
