AVIRA Free Anti-Virus Version (9.0.0.418) – Full Review

December 19, 2009

Results breakdown:

Passed – Did well in all the tests

Acceptable – Could go ether way…but in most cases it passed

Failed – Did not work or only worked 1 out of 10 times…the tests were run

Not Tested – Has yet to be requested or there is some limitations to prevent accurate test results

——————————————————————————————–

- Stability of ProgramPassed – Did not have any issues related to stability reported

- Number of time the program has been compromised by Hackers or VirusPassed – No major virus attacks recorded as compared to the 3 recorded during version (9.0.403) version of AVIRA. But still way to early to tell.

- Speed of ScanPassed – Way faster then AVG, AVAST and or PC Tools: Free Anti-Virus in relation to full scan.

- Does AVIRA do automatic updates by itselfAcceptable – There seems to be some issue with major update to AVIRA. But generally day to day updates are downloaded and installed with out issue.

- Residential Shield TestPassed – Has some odd detection at times. But there is no doubt in my mind that AVIRA is one of the best first line defense programs out there. With regards to the quick turn around of detection before full blown infection of your system. Also seems to yet still be some improvements had in the area of Internet hijack virus attacks.

- Internet Browser Cookie Detection And Removal TestFailed - You have to change default setting to even pick up even the most basic Internet cookies. I still have issue even with the Internet cookies option on.

Spyware/AdwareFailed – Seems to have missed every types of Spyware/Adware I tested it with..180souloutions, weatherbug, Zango and many many more. I am not sure what AVIRA is says it picks up adware and spyware. When I have no reports of even the most basic spyware or adware being picked up. AVIRA has detected some infected websites. But thats just about it and I would not really call that mainstream adware or spyware

- Root Kit Detection RatePassed – AVIRA detected rate has improved once again to 3.5 out of 5 Root Kit multiplier virus detected during my tests.

- Vista / XP Virus detection rate test – Win 7 Not Tested /VISTA Passed / XP Passed -  The same detection rate  across the board regardless of operating system, so far anyways

- Link Scanner/ Safe SearchNot Available

E-mail scannerNot Available

**Like always the results speak for itself…but as always I leave the final test up to you guys….

Overall Rating: 6 Passed, 1 Acceptable, 2 Failed, 2 Not Available, 1 Not Tested (Total # of tests done 13)

Survey Spot – Survey Site Review (December 2009)

December 18, 2009

Dear Readers,

Now You Can Follow The Computer Savvy Weblog Via Twitter: http://twitter.com/Computer_Savvy

It’s that time again…. survey website review time

Name: Survey Spot

Link: http://www.surveyspot.com/OW/index.aspx?ChapterID=10602&filterID=2323

Who is eligible: US & Canada only

Type of Award or payment: Points / Instant Prize / Sweepstakes /

(Must have minimal of 1,000 points or $10.00 to claim)

Points or cash normally earned per survey: 1-100

Sign-up time: Not Very Long

How many surveys to expect per week: 0-15

How long to collect reward: A really long time….you get more rewards if you are a mother of younger children…

Do they Spam you: No

Number of Survey received over 5 year since joining: Lost Count

Overall rating: 1.5 out of 5 -You have to be really lucky to get surveys worth anything. Survey Spot is not only hard to earn anything, but the fact that the points per survey that you do is so unfair. It will take you way more then a year in the most cases. I have also noticed a slight reduction in the number of surveys offering points…but there are way more surveys offering nothing or Sweepsstakes.

It is important to note that it appears that for mothers with younger children the overall score increases by half a point to a score to become 2 out of 5 due to the fact there are way more surveys as well as rewards (Mothers tend to get better surveys as well as much better prizes overall)

AVG Free Anti-Virus Version (8.5.426) – Full Review

December 16, 2009

Now You Can Follow The Computer Savvy Weblog Via Twitter: http://twitter.com/Computer_Savvy

I personally did not think I was gonna need to review this version of AVG Free becuase of AVG Free is now @ the 9.0 stage. But after a ton of e-mails I again decided to changed my mind. Even thou this review is gonna be almost the same point for point VS. my (8.5.424) AVG Free review. People still seem to really want us to review it. So you asked so nice you don’t have to ask twice..Enjoy the review

Results breakdown:

Passed – Did well in all the tests

Acceptable – Could go ether way…but in most cases it passed

Failed – Did not work or only worked 1 out of 10 times…the tests were run

——————————————————————————————–

- Stability of ProgramAcceptable – Still seems to have  some issues of which defy explanation.

- Number of times the program has been compromised by Hacker or VirusPassed – AVG Free Anti-Virus has not had any direct attacks by ether hacker nor virus.

- Speed of ScanAcceptable – Has improved since last update but still really far away from AVIRA speed of full scan

- Does AVG do automatic updates by itself with out issueAcceptable – It depends on the computer you are using and what programs are on said computer…..Sad but very true…

- Residential shield testFailed – AVG Free still detects the viruses way to late and only after initial infection.

- Internet Browser Cookie detection and removal testFailed – AVG still does not auto-detect most Internet cookies with the AVG Free default settings,  AVG picks up 1 out of every 10 Internet cookies I tested it with. AVG Free still fails to catch the ever popular WEBTRENDS cookie from Google. Now even with AVG Free setting changed to catch Internet cookies it will only very slightly changed the detection rate form 1 to out of 3 or 4 out of every 10 Internet cookies (Now you need to change the default setting to pick up more Internet Cookies)

-Please be aware this issue is all but fixed in 9.0.xxx version of AVG FREE..so best to upgrade as soon as you can..-

- Spyware/AdwareFailed – Seems to miss every types of Spyware or Adware I tested it with. Such as 180souloutions, weatherbug, Zango and many many more…

- Root Kit detection Rate - Failed – This was very sad not even one detection. Even with a over 15 diffrent Root Kit multiplier virus tested.

- Vista / XP Virus detection rate test – VISTA Acceptable / XP Acceptable -  XP seems for some reason to have a a little bit of a better detection rate then Vista. But only very slightly….

- Link Scanner/ Safe SearchFailed – I still find even this new version still slows down what ever browser you wish to use. If you want to see major improvements you’ll have to upgrade to 9.0.xxx

E-mail scannerAcceptable – I still feel the e-mail scanner is way more of a hassle, then being useful. But both Ghost and Ding Dong Danny 2 of my blog members expressed to me. That they would not feel safe without AVG Free Anti-Virus E-mail Scanner Active. So that pushed the E-mail scanner form the usual FAILED status to Acceptable Status…

**Like always the results speak for itself. But as always I leave the final test up to you guys….

Overall Rating: 1 Passed, 6 Acceptable, 5 Failed (Total # of tests done 12)

———————————————–

***Please people if you can download the latest version of AVG Free Anti-Virus (9.0.704). It is a lot better then any 8.5.xxx version of AVG Free and keep your eyes peeled for my review of AVG Free (9.0.716) & AVIRA (9.0.0.418) coming real soon.

Opinion Outpost – Survey Site Review (December 2009)

December 15, 2009

Dear Readers,

Now You Can Follow The Computer Savvy Weblog Via Twitter: http://twitter.com/Computer_Savvy

It’s that time again…. survey website review time…ENJOY :)

Name: Opinion Outpost

Link: https://www.opinionoutpost.com/index.php

Who is eligible: Canada & US Only

Type of Award or payment: Cash (points) / Instant Prize / Sweepstakes / Donation / Amazon.com e-certificates

(10 point = $1.00 US) Must have 50 points = $5.00 US

Points normally earned per survey: 1-50 points

Sign-up time: Very Lengthy

How many Surveys to expect per week: 0-15 (I have received more)

How Long to collect reward: About 3 months to 1 year…Doing all surveys sent to you in full (Sometimes it can take a lot longer, Depending on how much you want before you claim your cash -Example $20.00-

Do they Spam you: No

Number of Survey received over 7 year since joining: 450

Overall rating: 4.5 out of 5 – Opinion outpost has fixed some of the  major time delay to receive your Money. But a lot of the surveys you will be unable to complete because you don’t qualify. But the ones you can answer in full expect between 5-50 points or $0.50 to $5 USD. I would give Opinion Outpost a perfect score. If I received more paid surveys in which I actually qualified for (Points).

-I personally rate Opinion Outpost the 2nd best Survey site out there currently-

WARNING: You must complete your profile as well as update it up to0 twice a year, To keep on getting surveys if you don’t they will just stop with out any warning.
