Q+A: Is It Possible I May Have A Skype Virus ?

December 28, 2009

Now You Can Follow The Computer Savvy Weblog Via Twitter: http://twitter.com/Computer_Savvy

Hello everyone today I am going to talk about a very major mis-understanding about how Skype generally works….

Q: Is It Possible I May Have A Skype Virus ?

A: Now, I just want to let people out there know that Skype as of late. Has been acting more like a Virus gateway other then it’s intended purpose as a really cool safe communication tool. I say that because of the now super common un-solicited communication from people that you don’t even know. Who contact you with links, some of which are very easy to discern as a threat/viruses. Others are some pretty clever wording almost begging you to press on said link to win a computer or to see and image or even download a so called SAFE program.

**Now unfortunately there is a feature with in Skype that works like a random chat or random location of a person….Simply put they click a button/Icon then Skype will dial a number at random. Now of course this leads to some very interesting and sometimes very destructive outcomes.

So you could have a person who is a hacker or just plain not very nice person. Who will random dial and end up with your Skype ID come up then what normally happens is you not knowing the person will ask them who they are and often there is no answer…BUT there is a LINK…..sometimes it will say to learn more about who I am please click the link. Which may infect your computer with several very nasty virus cocktails out there.

Now the most common of these random callers are people who pretend to be young lady’s who want to chat in a sexual nature. But those always include links at some point it will very from right of the back of first contact to a few hours or even days later. When they know they have you on the hook…

Ok so what should I do ?

Well thats a great question… First of don’t answer un-solicitation communication from people you don’t know. You should be aware of any thing overly sexual in nature. That is un-wanted such as pictures or links to sex related pictures or personal web pages or blogs. Also be aware that in many countries people can be charge with some very nasty charges such as having porn of a person under the age of majority (under legal age). So be very careful just having the images on your computer will be enough in some places…even if it was by accident….such as a link embedded in a Skype message.

***Lastly if you get a ring from someone you don’t know and you suspect. Anything going on that is unclear to you and or is of a nature that is disturbing or sexual in nature to you. You can block that person as well as report them to Skype as abusing the program.
