July 23, 2009

Dear Readers,

(Last Updated Dec 22, 2009 @ 7:01 pm EST) Minor Update

Now You Can Follow The Computer Savvy Weblog Via Twitter: http://twitter.com/Computer_Savvy

Well it seems after the last few days with no issues with AVG Free (8.5.430 or 9.0.704) there is a snag. My AVG will not update. The update says failed because of ether missing .bin file or .crt file…

Here is the fix I have been getting so many e-mails about. So if you guys need anymore clarification please let me know but this should be as straight forward as it can possible get…Enjoy…

I Would use the ‘Repair‘ option in the installation process of course to do that you need a non-corrupted version of AVG Free install file.. I would highly recommend using the latest (9.0.704) install file….

A. Download & Save the latest AVG Free Anti-Virus installation package from this link download.com. I have downloaded the installation file myself and it works just fine but at times it can be a bit slow. (-Please Note: Will Depend On Your Internet Connection-)

-Please make sure you download install file to your DESKTOP-

B. Run the AVG Free Install File

C. Choose the Repair option and follow the setup wizard

D. Re-start your computer then try to run the AVG Free Interface Via Desktop Icon

WARNING: Do not ever try to run AVG install file from the Internet as that will always cause issues. THANKS TO AVG FREE FORUM FOR THESE WORDS OF WISDOM

If that fails to work….

Now to check if your AVG install File is corrupted….By using the version 8.5.430 or 9.0.704 install file….

A. Download & save the latest AVG Free installation package from this link version 8.5.430 or 9.0.704 via my favorite source download.com

B. Run the AVG Free install file

C. Choose the Un-install option and follow the setup wizard, when you get to the part to remove user settings, select it.

D. Re-start your computer then..

E. Now reinstall AVG using the setup file you got in step 1 and update.

PLEASE – Disable the other protection programs before you start the AVG installation process as they can prevent AVG Free from installing properly.

AVG Free Anti-Virus Version (8.5.392) – Full Review

July 23, 2009

(Last Updated July 23, 2009 @ 6:30 pm EST) Added New Test “Number of Times the program has been compromised by Hacker and or Virus”

Now You Can Follow The Computer Savvy Weblog Via Twitter: https://twitter.com/Computer_Savvy

THE FOLLOWING ARE TESTS, THAT HAVE BEEN DONE AND THE  RESULTS….

Results breakdown:

Passed – Did well in all the tests

Acceptable – Could go ether way…but in most cases it passed

Failed – Did not work or only worked 1 out of 10 times…the tests were run

——————————————————————————————–

- Stability of ProgramAcceptable – Still seems to have  issues  some of which defy explanation.

- Number of time the program has been compromised by Hacker or Virus - Passed - AVG Free Anti-Virus has not had any direct attacks as compared to AVIRA Free Anti-Virus. Which had 2 major virus attacks which attacked AVIRA core systems files only and not any other program or virus scan was affected. ** The viruses which attacked AVIRA were called “Win32/Polycrypt” and “HACKTOOL

- Speed of ScanAcceptable – Has improved since last update..but still far away from AVIRA or AVAST

- Does AVG do automatic updates by itself with out issue - Passed – Only once did I have issue and the issue was related to Windows core update as well as a complete power failure. So not in the least AVG Free Anti-Virus fault.

- Residential shield testFailed – Detection rate has clearly gotten worse

- Internet Browser Cookie detection and removal testAcceptable – AVG still does not auto-detect most Internet cookies with the AVG Free default settings,  AVG picks up 1 out of every 10 Internet cookies I tested it with. AVG Free still fails to catch the ever popular WEBTRENDS cookie from Google. (Now you need to change the default setting to pick up most Internet Cookies)

Spyware/AdwareFailed – Seems to miss every types of Spyware or Adware I tested it with..180souloutions, weatherbug, Zango and many many more…

- Root Kit detection Rate -Failed – This was very sad….not one detection…even with a few diffrent Root Kit multiplier Virus.

- Vista / XP Virus detection rate test – VISTA Acceptable / XP Acceptable -  XP seems for some reason to have a better detection rate then Vista but only slightly….

- Link Scanner/ Safe SearchAcceptable – Don’t hold your breath that this will help you in all circumstances….it still gives a lot of false positives and your gonna miss out on a lot of good websites….just because they have not been rated yet..

E-mail scannerFailed – More of a hassle, then being useful in the least.

**Like always the results speak for itself…but as always I leave the final test up to you guys….

Over All Rating: 2 Passed, 6 Acceptable, 4 Failed (Total # of tests done 12)

Well to my surprise, I found when I went to download.com to browse. I found huge new release for LimeWire Free (5.2.8) and even thou it is to soon to say. It appears to load up a little slower then the last last 2 versions. Also they have changed the flash screen to a much funner Lime Super Hero interesting but nothing huge. Keep your eyes peeled for a full review as well as reviews on some of the other more popular and not so popular P2P software programs.

In the mean time here is theDirect Download Link -
