Scam Watch: Identity Theft Explained (Part 2)

May 12, 2009

(Last Updated Oct 5, 2009 @ 3:30 pm EST)

Welcome to first post by Computer’s Savvy’s very own Pochp. If you want to see more visit his blog @ http://pochp.wordpress.com

Identity Theft Explained (Part 2)

If you will view all my posts about Microsoft and Windows, you’ll find that I was very angry at Microsoft. Why? Because my hotmail account was hijacked and at first when I asked for support from Microsoft just when I just started getting suspicious, I was just given the run around again and again. I felt they helped the hijacker!

Actually, this is an update of Seven’s post ‘Identity Theft Explained’. So what is ID theft?

Identity Theft is a crime in which an impostor obtains key pieces of personal identifying information (PII) such as Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers and uses them for their own personal gain. This is called Identity Theft. It can start with lost or stolen wallets, pilfered mail, a data breach, computer virus, phishing, a scam, or paper documents thrown out by you or a business (dumpster diving). This crime varies widely, and can include check fraud, credit card fraud, financial identity theft, criminal identity theft, governmental identity theft, and  or identity fraud.

Signs of identity theft:

  • Accounts you didn’t open and debts on credit report or on your accounts that you can’t explain.

  • Fraudulent or inaccurate information on your credit reports, including accounts and personal information, like your Social Security number, address(es), name or initials, and employers.

  • Failing to receive bills or other mail. Follow up with creditors if your bills don’t arrive on time. A missing bill could mean an identity thief has already taken over your account and changed your billing address to try to cover his/her tracks.

  • Receiving credit cards that you never applied for.

  • Being denied credit, or being offered less favorable credit terms, like a higher interest rate, for what seems like for no apparent reason.

  • Getting calls or letters from debt collectors or businesses about merchandise or services you never bought.

This was a quote from the Wall Street Journal although I find it pessimistic:

Why Technology Won’t Prevent Identity Theft

“Impersonation isn’t new. In 1556, a Frenchman was executed for impersonating Martin Guerre and this week hackers impersonated Barack Obama on Twitter. It’s not even unique to humans: mockingbirds, Viceroy butterflies, and the brown octopus all use impersonation as a survival strategy. For people, detecting impersonation is a hard problem for three reasons: we need to verify the identity of people we don’t know, we interact with people through “narrow” communications channels like the telephone and Internet, and we want computerized systems to do the verification for us.”

Does this mean that we have to avoid anything electronic to prevent ID theft?

Do you want to know how much your identity costs on the Internet? You can use the Norton Online Risk Calculator to do that for you.

Remember: the risk of your ID being stolen increases day by day.

Scam Watch: Identity Theft Explained (Part 1)

May 11, 2009

Dear Readers,

Hello Again….Today I’m going to talk about Identity theft……….

Ok, then “Child Identity Theft” is on the rise…What do you think happens when kids are allowed to setup FaceBook Accounts, MySpace pages ? and or any other type of place…where your kids are allowed to put in lots of information on themselves or the rest of their friends or family. Even Hotmail has a large amount of information, you personally have to put in. That if the wrong person gets a hold of. Said person can potentially steal your child’s identity. Because the fact is more then likely, your child does not have a criminal past and can easily be blackmailed. They do not have debt like a credit cards, so it is a clean identity with no bags attached. Criminals tend to prefer this and it seem to be easier, almost like a gift because the lack of good passwords or hard to guess secret questions.

SO WHAT SHOULD YOU DO TO PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR CHILD FOR IDENTITY THEFT

After you or your child signs-up for any type of accounts like FaceBook, MySpace or Hotmail It is highly recommended you strip your accounts. By taking out all the information other then you first name, you may in some cases have to keep your last name visible. But the reason for the account information stripping will come apparent. As I explain what can be done with each part of your information in easy to read steps…so here it go-

1. First and Last Name – Can be used in a Google search to find out your background information. Such as when you graduated from High School and the years you attended any type of schooling by just using sites such as Classmates.com and there is no way to block this I’ve tried. (Classmates.com is a huge spamming site, meaning it has a lot of junk information some of which are not even accurate and people don’t need to ask for your permission to add you to the database or you can accept with just one click of an active link in an e-mail)

2. Land Line Phone Number – Backward address look up can be done on any Internet based Phone Book. Anybody will be able to find exactly where you live..truly a scary thought done with a few clicks of the mouse. If you need to put a phone number. You should use a non-landline phone number, such as a cellphone number..this method works pretty well and most of the time the baddies can’t attach an address or even a name with said number.

3. Postal Code – Same but not as accurate. (Can be narrowed down to several block area)

4. Address - This is so easy, Same method used backwards look up to find phone number.

5. Bad Password/Or sensitive password that is similar to social insurance number or bank code – Now people don’t laugh at this, I in my 7 years or so of doing computer related security and helping family’s protect themselves and their children from this and many other types of threats. I’ve seen and dealt with hundreds of so called “Self inflicted Identity Theft” the way this happens is fairly common unfortunately…lets just say BILLY chooses their Hotmail password to be 01-12-00. Which just so happens to be their birthday…. Oh and  their online bank account password as well…In some cases even their own debit card password (People don’t grin I’ve seen this and in fact just a few days ago) and I’m sad to say that. But on the Internet there is a program called a “BRUTE FORCER” What does a BRUTE FORCER do ? Well basically it tries every possible password letter, number, symbol combo. Till it finds the right one to cracks the password (For what ever account it has decided to target) . This process could take minutes, hours, days and even years to crack said password. It depends on the strength of said password) The good news it is really hard to use in most cases and after the baddies have gotten in and got all that information on you from your hotmail account main profile. He/She may also find a Bank  account Statement you decided not to delete left in your inbox. And now knowing you have an online bank account or even a Paypal account. He/She will try your birthday as your password then as the old stand by as your Secret Password Answer to get into your bank account. Then again for the baddies this would be like winning the Lottery. He/She drains your bank account or accounts and is gone and off to the next mark/victim.

DON’T MAKE IT EASY TO FALL VICTIM….FOLLOW THESE TIPS FOR A REALLY STRONG PASSWORD

1. No NAMES (Family name, Pet names, Friends names)

2. Don’t use the same password for more then 2 accounts you have on-line

3. Use upper case, lower case, and number symbol combination

4. Make sure there is at least one number somewhere in your password (Most sites will make you do this..regardless)

5. Make the password as long as possible, more then 7 letters, numbers or symbols long is highly recommended

6. Try not to use auto-complete provided by Firefox or Internet Explorer. Unless you put a really hard MASTER password to get at your other passwords in the case of MOZILLA FIREFOX 3

7. Never post your password or passwords next to your computer. Or in a place that would be really obvious that it is a computer related password for instance where you store your PC GAMES or so on.

- Just because it is the easiest thing to do, Like auto-save your credit card information or online passwords. Think what if my computer got stolen or my child got my password. What could said person get into and what kind of “DAMAGE” can this case in my life, money or relationship wise. Then after doing all the above steps. It may take longer, but trust me you’ll be a lot safer and your gonna be less likely to get caught with your pants down.

**Stay tuned for tomorrow, when I post part 2 of  “Identity Theft Explained

Hope this helps and please be safe and know that a little bit of protection goes a long way. When it comes to any type of technology….

Results breakdown:

Passed – Did well in all the tests

Acceptable – Could go ether way…but in most cases it passed

Failed – Did not work or only worked 1 out of 10 times…the tests were run

——————————————————————————————–

- Stability of ProgramAcceptable – Still seems to have  issues  some of which defy explanation.

- Speed of ScanAcceptable – Has improved since last update..but still far away from AVIRA or AVAST

- Does AVG do automatic updates by itself - Passed – Only once did I have issue and that was due to a virus

- Residential shield testFailed – Detection rate has clearly gotten worse

- Internet Browser Cookie detection and removal testAcceptable – AVG no longer auto-detects Internet cookies with the AVG Free default settings,  AVG picks up 1 out of every 10 Internet cookies I tested with. AVG Free still fails to catch the ever popular WEBTRENDS cookie from Google. (Now you need to change the default setting to pick up most Internet Cookies)

Spyware/AdwareFailed – Seems to miss every types of Spyware or Adware I tested it with..180souloutions, weatherbug, Zango and many many more…

- Root Kit detection Rate -Failed – This was very sad….not one detection…even with a Root Kit multiplier Virus.

- Vista / XP Virus detection rate test – VISTA Failed / XP Acceptable-  XP seems for some reason to have a better detection rate then Vista

- Link Scanner/ Safe SearchAcceptable – Don’t hold your breath that this will help you in all circumstances….it still gives a lot of false positives and your gonna miss out on a lot of good websites….just because they have not been rated yet..

E-mail scannerFailed – More of a hassle, then being useful in the least.

**Like always the results speak for itself…but as always I leave the final test up to you guys….

PC Tools: Desktop Maestro 3.0 – Software Review

May 8, 2009

AA. Cost: $49.95 USD

BB. Is it worth that cost ?: Not recommended…there are way cheaper options….

CC. Level of Knowledge needed to use software: A little bit more then basic knowledge of computers main components such as task manager and system files….

1. Ease of use – Very Easy – It has 8 main Icon Buttons – BUT THERE ARE OPTIONS THAT CAN SCREW UP YOUR COMPUTER

1a. Interface - Very easy and simple to use…everything is simple and pretty much one button activation

2. Quality of scan – Super effective..not pron to as many false postives as older version of PC tools registry scanners…

2A. Speed of Scan – Super fast

3. Updating – Super Fast

4. Can you run other programs during the scan ? Yes

4a. Can you run programs during update ? Yes

5. Is there a progress bar? Yes

6. Can you leave it running and it will run with out issue ? Yes

7. Is there adware or Spyware bundled with it ? No

8. Will it scan archive files ? N/A

9. Is it stable ? Yes very stable..but this is for Vista 32bit and 64bit

10. How long do scans take ? 5-20 min

Over all a 4 out of 5 stars- There are a lot more options in this version of the software. Too the point were you are confused as what each button/task actually does, when you press them. This one however is clearly not only more complicated but it is made from the ground up for VISTA and not in anyway to be used for XP…

Extra info: Some options can cause damage to your computer..so be careful and read manual if needed..or just get an older version of PC tools registry fixer/scanner

New Version (4.38) Of SpeedFan Is Now Available To Download

May 7, 2009

Dear Readers,

Well it seems like it has been forever since the last version of SpeedFan was released (4.37)…The past version was very stable, But it of course had some compatibility issues as have all the SpeedFans versions I have tested. Of course some CPU’s, Graphic Cards, and or motherboards..Sometimes would show in-correct temperature readings or not pick up the components at all……

This new version seems to have better detection rate and seems to like Laptops better the last version. But other then thous minor annoyances. It is a step up from the last version…but not a huge step…still you can’t beat the price -free-

Q+A: Why Does The New Version Of AVG Free Ant-Virus (8.5.325) No Longer Detecting My Internet Cookies ?

May 5, 2009

Dear Readers,

Q: Why Does The New Version Of AVG Free Ant-Virus (8.5.325) No Longer Detecting My Internet Cookies ?

A: Well after a bunch of tests and a lot of e-mails from you guys..I have looked into the lack of Internet cookie detection issue and yes indeed it is true….With both Mozilla FireFox and IE 7 & IE 8…..AVG use to detect somewhere between 5 and 10 Internet Cookies on Average…and now…I get maybe one or too….

Right now…my best guess..is with the last 2 versions of AVG (8.5.287, 8.5.325). AVG/Grisoft changed the default settings to neglect most if not all major Internet cookies…and I say that because..of AVG no longer detecting the most prevalent cookie out there..”WEBTRENDS”..Google’s search engine cookie..

If you want AVG to start detecting your Internet cookies please use the following link to learn how: How to get AVG Free to detect Internet cookies
