The Best Desktop Programs That Will Make Your Life Easier

May 29, 2009

Dear Readers,

(Last Updated June 8, 2009 @ 8:01 pm EST)

Now You Can Follow The Computer Savvy Weblog Via Twitter: https://twitter.com/Computer_Savvy

Today, I’m going to give a list of must have programs for your desktop and a brief description of what they do and where you can get them..(This list is in no particular order)

1. Virus Scan - Well this one is pretty easy…A Virus scan, scans for viruses and other unwanted malicious programming code. I would recommend getting AVIRA or AVAST. Both can be downloaded @ download.com

2. WinRaR- is used to decompress or compress files you can also password lock said files. WinRaR is a must have if you are using any P2P software programs and is needed for most files downloaded from the Internet. The main reason being because in can compress files to a really small size. You can download this program also from www.download.com and does not come with any adware or spyware bundled with it if it is downloaded from the site above. WinRaR is also trialware in most cases and there for also has a message that pops up after 15-30 days saying please register for full version.

3. Adobe Reader- is used to read PDF documents and a must have for any desktop. The Adobe site should have it and the reader is free with no limatations. (Currently Adobe is at version 9.1)

4. A Media player- Pretty much any type of media player will do. The media player is there so you can play media files such as music and movies. The main one I would recommend is VLC. VLC is free and easy to find and provided you download the K-lite codecs pack from www.free-codecs.com. VLC will play pretty much any file you can throw at it and believe me I have tried some pretty exotic combos and it has passed. Pretty much every time.

6. Windows Live Messenger- This program is used to monitor your hotmail account and to talk with friends or family via text, video or voice. (WLM) is really safe and I would not know what to do without it.

7. Mozilla FireFox 3- This is alternative Internet browser. FireFox is used as your Internet web browser  instead of pre-packaged Internet Explorer that comes with Windows. FireFox is generally a lot faster then IE and it is a lot cleaner looking. But that does depend on what set-up and theme you choose. I personally like darker themes so thous I use “REDSHIFT”. FireFox has hundreds of mods you can choose  from to find the one you like the best. Just remember to update both the mod and the FireFox itself. So you are less likely to run into an issue. There are also a  lot of add-ons you can use like adblock plus and different types of dictionary. But also be aware that some sites will not work well with certain add-ons.

5. Alcohol 52% - This program is used to mounts and dismounts cd/dvd on a virtual drive. So you can play games with out the CD in the drive. You can also play ISO’s files with Alcohol 52%. The best part is it is free and you can find it at www.download.com and there is no spyware or adware bundled with this software from my tests.

AVG Free “404 Error” Maybe caused By AVG Safe Search Add-on

May 27, 2009

Dear Readers,

(Last Updated June 8, 2009 @ 8:01 pm EST)

Now You Can Follow The Computer Savvy Weblog Via Twitter: https://twitter.com/Computer_Savvy

I have been getting a lot of mail recently about this AVG Free Anti-Virus “404 Error”. To be honest, I have looked into this issue a  number of times and found not a whole lot about it. I figured at the start it was browser related FireFox 3 or the new IE 8 but soon after trying to get the error myself. I was successful when turning on the AVG Free Add-ons “Safe Search” and “Link Scanner“.

So your probably wondering what is Se7en trying to say well when it comes down to it. It is pretty simple just disable both the “AVG Link Scanner” and “AVG Safe Search” and re-start your browser and see if you get the same error. I would say it is pretty unlikely that the 404 website error will be present.

By all means please let me know. If you have encountered a different reason for this error.

FaceBook Scam Update

FaceBook Scams Update

By the number of virus and scam attacks on social networking sites, Facebook (FB) seems to top the list. The last of which is by scammers intercepting and using the FB ‘friend search’ to steal private data. FB started in April 2004.

Then its troubles began when it introduced its developer platform. In short, this allows anyone to create custom applications that introduce themselves into the Facebook architecture. Some examples are Flickr and Twitter. Hackers then used these apps to introduce viruses, some of which were named Zombie, Vampire, and Harry Potter.

The biggest scandal FB had was maybe last March. A student named Byron Ng tipped off the Associated Press about a Facebook exploit that’s been circulating around the ‘net for months now’. It also tipped off Facebook to what was going on, and the company was quick to plug the exploit.

The Setup

First, you had to find the ID number of your target. Facebook assigns each user an individual ID number, perhaps a mistake on the service’s part. When you’re viewing your own profile, this is the huge string of numerals that comes after the “profile.php?id=” part of the URL. Same deal when you’re viewing a friend’s profile.

Once you had the Facebook ID number, the exploit itself was easy enough to navigate. Facebook used to delineate the URLs for photographs as such:

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=[[THE PICTURE'S ID]]

&op=1&view=all&subj=[[ID NUMBER OF SOMEONE TAGGED IN THE PHOTO]]

&id=[[ID NUMBER OF ALBUM'S OWNER]]

The worst virus that attacked FB was the ‘Koobface’. This spreads by sending a message to people’s inboxes, pretending to be from a Facebook friend to get private financial data. The hacker provides a ‘bait link’ then asks you to watch a “secret video by Tom”. When users try and play the video they’re asked to download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player. If they do, that’s when the virus takes hold and attacks the computer.

These are the two ways Koobface gets people’s credit card details.

1. It can either wait for you to buy something online and just remember the details you type in on your keyboard.

2. It can search your computer for any cookies you might have from when you’ve bought something in the past, and take them from there.

**Simply devilish isn’t it?

Just last Friday the 15th and for the fourth time in two weeks, Facebook was the target again of a phishing scam designed to fool Facebook users into visiting unsafe Web pages. But a Facebook spokesperson told The New York Times the damage “is not widespread and is only impacting a small fraction of a percent of users.”

WinZip And WinRaR – Software Reviews

May 25, 2009

Dear Readers,

(Last Updated June 8, 2009 @ 8:01 pm EST)

Now You Can Follow The Computer Savvy Weblog Via Twitter: https://twitter.com/Computer_Savvy

I’m back again and this time with a software review of 2 must have programs. That as of late people seem to have missed and as always the con’s first then the pro’s…

WINZIP- Direct Download Link-

Con’s

1. Some really annoying pop-ups after the 30 or 45 day free trial

2. Can’t compress files as small as WinRaR

Pro’s

1. Easy to use

2. Can still use after trial is over

3. Really small install file

4. Really fast install process

5. Needed for all those P2P download people out there

6. Simple interface

7. Easy to find and download

8. Can add passwords to files after compressing them

9. Can be used with many different file types

So I give WinZip a 4 out of 5 because it is no longer the standard for compressing and decompressing files WinRaR is…

WinRaR - Direct Download Link-

Con’s

1. Some annoying pop-ups after the 30 or 45 day free trial

Pro’s

1. Easy to use

2. Can still use after trial is over

3. Really small install file

4. Really fast install process

5. Needed for all those P2P download people out there

6. Simple interface

7. Easy to find and download

8. Can add passwords to files after compressing them

9. Can be used with many different file types

I give WinRaR a 5 out of 5 because it is the standby for most P2P programs and it can really make files really small compared to WinZip…

You can download both of these programs at www.download.com and there is no spyware or adware bundled with these programs…So relax. I would highly recommended both as a must haves and I would say absolutely essential if you are downloading or need to post a files or transport files from one computer to another.

New AVG Free Anti-Virus (8.5.339) Update Increases Internet Cookie Detection Rate Slightly

May 22, 2009

Dear Reader,

(Updated June 25, 2009 @ 2:55 pm EST)

Now You Can Follow The Computer Savvy Weblog Via Twitter: https://twitter.com/Computer_Savvy

The early results are in on the new just recently released of AVG Free Anti-Virus (8.5.339) and thous results stat an slightly increased detection rate of Internet cookies. Where there use to be a detection rate of 1 out of every 10 cookies now it is more like 50 % or 5 out of 10 Internet cookies.

I still highly recommend for you to change the default setting of AVG Free to detected more cookies because that detection rate is still very poor. The Reason I say this is because AVG still does not detect all the time the Google Cookie WEBTRENDS. Till it does I will not be happy with it’s detection results.

If you would like  to find out how to change your AVG Free Internet cookies detection -Please use the following link- Q+A: How do I Scan For Internet Cookies Using AVG Free Anti-Virus 8.0/8.5 ?
