Q+A: I Can’t Install/Un-install AVG 8.0/8.5? What Should I Do?

Dear Readers,

(Last Updated Oct 23, 2009 @ 10:05 pm EST) Now this post is out of date – The newest version of AVG Free is (9.0.686) or via automatic/manual update (9.0.989)

Now You Can Follow The Computer Savvy Weblog Via Twitter: https://twitter.com/Computer_Savvy

Alright people I know that this is pretty much an the same post as I did for my first 2.0 Q+A. BUT I AM STILL GETTING PEOPLE ASKING ME HOW. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS TRY THE REPAIR OPTION FIRST as your first step if AVG is not working the way it is suppose to.

IF you are still having issues…then by all means comment or e-mail me @ computer.savvy@hotmail.com

Q: I can’t install/un-install AVG 8.0/8.5? What should I do?

A: First off, You should always download the newest version of AVG from -www.avg.com- or www.download.com, which I often find is a much  better choice.

First off try the old stand by AVG ‘Repair‘ option which you can choose during the installation process. Of course to do that you need a non-corrupted version of AVG Free install file.. I would highly recommend using the latest 8.5.420 install file….

A. Download & save the latest AVG Free installation package from this link -www.avg.com- or you could use the slightly older version via my favorite source download.com

B. Run the AVG Free install file

C. Choose the Repair option and follow the setup wizard

D. Restart your computer then test

Download the install file to your DESKTOP

WARNING: Do not ever try to run AVG install file from the Internet as that will always cause issues. THANKS TO AVG FREE FORUM FOR THOSE WORDS OF WISDOM

If the AVG installation fails to work….your gonna need to check to see if your file is corrupted

Now to check if your AVG install File is corrupted….By using the version 8.5.420 install file….

A. Download & save the latest AVG Free installation package from this link -www.avg.com- or you could use my favorite source download.com

B. Run the AVG Free install file

C. Choose the Un-install option and follow the setup wizard, when you get to the part to remove user settings, select it.

D. Restart your computer then…

E. Now reinstall AVG using the setup file you got in step 1 and update.

PLEASE disable the other protection programs before you start the AVG installation process as they can prevent AVG Free from installing properly

Types of protection this covers are:

- Spyware/Adware (Example: Windows defender, Spybot)

- Anti-virus (Example: Avira )

- Firewalls (Example: Zone Alarm, Window’s Firewall)

Hi I’ve updated my AVG regularly since my last post, and It did find some malware, most notably RisinG.exe but still no luck with being able to update to 8.5 or to uninstall or repair AVG8. I have tried with the latest AVG 8.5 download from Grisoft.com today but no luck. Still same old error messages. They pop up just after AVG tries to write a registry entry or something.

I would realy appreciate some help with this.

    Thanks

    • Se7en Says:

      Dear Divad,

Well Divad, there are a few free virus scans..I would recommend AVIRA or AVAST they are very easy to use and free…

      Hope that helps,

      Hey,

It should set-up the folder by it self..you may have a damaged or corrupted version of AVG install file..try..getting it from another source like http://www.download.com…..

also make sure..you deleted all old versions of AVG…re-start your computer..then give it a go again…

    • Se7en Says:

      Dear Melissa,

Do you have a registry scanner/fixer ? Such as PC Tools: Desktop Mechanic….have you tried to restart your computer then try again ? What operating system do you use…XP or Vista….because if you are using Vista..make sure you have Administrative privileges or else you may encounter such an error…the other reason maybe..you have a corrupted AVG execution file…and to fix that..believe it or not..you need to try to re-install AVG yet again..but select REPAIR INSTEAD…

By all means if need more help…let me know..

      Thanks for the comment,

    • Se7en Says:

      Dear John H,

Yes…first off what kind of virus did you get “Name Wise’ and secondly did you just have AVG Free installed..I would recommend trying another free virus scan like AVIRA or AVAST..before you do the Re-Format thing..it could save you the trouble of re-starting from scratch…

Please let me know if you need more help….

      Hope that helps,

    • Se7en Says:

      Dear Ihateavg,

I know…I’m going to sound well CRAZY when I ask you to solve an AVG issues..with RE-installing AVG well sort of…First you run AVG Free version (8.5.339) from download.com . What you do is run the install file and instead of un-install or install option choice REPAIR option..this should fix your issue..then re-start your computer…and try again to un-install AVG Free via the control panel…then your done..I know it sounds really strange even off the wall but it works..GO FIGURE….

      Hope that helps you out,

  12. Toby Bedard Says:

Hi Mate, think you could send that solution to fix AVG 8.5 to my mailbox as well? I am having (guess what) Avg 8.5 issues as well. Can’t even get rid of it to go with something else now !
    Thank you,
    Toby

  13. cantueso Says:

Well, I have come here too late, can barely look out of my eyes anymore, will come back tomorrow. My AVG disappeared today at midday without saying a thing and I have not been able to install it again.
Tomorrow I will read this blog.At least now with this idea I will sleep very well. (Otherwise even in my sleep maybe I would have continued figuring what might have gone wrong.)

  14. cantueso Says:

Yesterday I tried re-installing and repairing three or four times, always with the same result: a grey card that says:

“The application could not be installed because its configuration is incorrect.”

Now I got as far as step I, but it isn’t working yet.

However, there were two novelties. 1) I obtained that “Installation manager” and saw it doing its thing really fast and effortless :-) , though without results :-( , but then came something most surprising: Windows XP said that I was protected against Virus!

Right now I won’t continue, because I am at work and these things tend to become obsessive. So don’t answer yet. I will duly and slowly try out whatever comes next.

  15. cantueso Says:

Now I did step 2, and all went fine, but twice Windows sent up its yellow card to tell me that my computer “may be at risk” and twice it said that the anti-virus had been activated.

Yet the AVG icon on the desktop produced again that gray card saying the application could not be installed because the configuration is not right.

I will do the next step tomorrow morning.

    • Remy "Se7en" Says:

      Dear cantueso,

Hi again sorry to hear you are still having issue with AVG Free Anti-Virus…what I would recommend is for you go to my main blog page at http://computersavvy.wordpress.com

After you go to that main page go to the right side and go to the AVG Issue & Fixes (Category) I have pretty much every fix and issue for AVG Free Explained there…you should find your situation at least 2 times in that (Category) if you are still having issue with finding it e-mail me or comment again.

Again take a look then let me know i f you still need more,

    • Remy "Se7en" Says:

      Dear Cantueso,

By the way to all concerned..I have just updated the download link to the newest AVG FREE ANTI-VIRUS Version (8.5.406)..

      Later days all,

      Remy “Se7en”

  16. cantueso Says:

Thank you for your instructions. I’ll go there tomorrow, because today I already tried installing after taking out the Windows firewall, but it jumped back into place even before AVG had finished installing itself.

And I am not worried because not too long ago I lived for nearly two years without virus protection and everything worked really well, though when I finally put AVG back in, they found more than 400 viruses, a real farm.

    • Remy "Se7en" Says:

      Dear cantueso,

Wow, that is crazy 400 viruses makes sense if yo have nerve had a virus scanner before. But it also depends on what you use your computer for as well to determine your overall risk.

      Thanks for the comment,

      Remy “Se7en”

  17. cantueso Says:

See? It is a hard row to hoe. Your access http//:computersavvy.wordpress.com
    does not work….

    :-D

  18. cantueso Says:

Almost got it, almost. I installed successfully, imagine, but then AVG asked me to register, and they sent me a link to my mail box. At my mail box I did not see any way to activate it. I took it to MS Office, where it also would not work. So I had the idea to take it to Hotmail and send me a mail with that link, which in Hotmail is easy to activate or comes in activated.

And that worked! I almost shouted with joy, but no. When I got back to AVG, they said that my password was wrong. I have only one password that I have been using for 5 years all over. They had me type it twice. I cannot have typed it wrong twice.

So they asked me to type in a new password. I typed in the same old one.

And they said they would now send me another confirmation link………..

Now I have to see whether I drum up the guts to see whether this time the password will be found right.

  19. cantueso Says:

By the way, I think my problem was double.

    1. I did not at first disable (disactivate) the Windows Firewall and Windows automatic uptaking

    2. One of us here (we are two) may have accidentally somehow asked for an upgrade so that for 30 days we had had an (unpaid) upgrade, when it suddenly disappeared.

This would also explain why among the error messages some said that my virus protection was “outdated”.

  20. cantueso Says:

They did not accept the password. Thewy say that either the username or the password is wrong. They say that they locked my account.

  21. cantueso Says:

As to the message of 12.08: the 2 reasons why I could not install the AVG: I found a third one:

I had not before uninstalled whatever version it was that I had in my files.
    ……………………………………………

As to my message of 12.17:
They said they locked my account, but the AVG is on, and now, just to see whether it works, I asked for an update, and no problem.

    • Remy "Se7en" Says:

      Dear cantueso,

Wow bud I am very confused a lot of comments and info…Are you saying you had a paid version of AVG ? or are you saying you had issues with hotmail ? What is your issue now ?

      Chat to ya later,

      Remy “Se7en”

  22. cantueso Says:

No issue with Hotmail, no. Hotmail helped where my other mail box let me down, but leave that out, it is a sub-story.
    …………………………………………………..

I have had a free AVG ever since I got a new computer in January. It disappeared.

I tried to re-install by following your steps 1 and 2, which did not work.

I tried step 3,(uninstalling existing files) and it worked. The installation was successful, and they asked me to register. I did and registered as “cantueso” with a password that I have had for about 5 years which I had to type twice. They sent me a confirmation key to my mail box at Lycos.com.

I activated the key, and when I logged in, they said my password was not valid.

So they sent me another key and with that I tried to log in again with the same results: invalid password.
    ————————————————–

However, maybe registering is not obligatory. That’s my last hope now. AVG is installed and working. They just did a scan. But when the log-in failed they said that would close my accountand that the confirmation key was good until August 18.

I do not have the guts to try again.
    ……………………………………………..

That one of us may inadvertently have clicked on some upgrading option “for trial” at one point is a hypothesis of mine that would explain

    1. why I could not install a new version,
    2. why it disappeared so suddenly, and
    3. why on a few of the error messages that came up during all those failed installations it said that my AVG was outdated.
    ……………………………………

Anyway, maybe it would be a good idea to delete some or all of these messages, because they might scare away other people, which would be a pity because AVG has always worked without fail. I had it for years on my other computer.

    • Remy "Se7en" Says:

      To All Concerned

First off…no registration is required for AVG Free Anti-Virus or at least the latest version.

secondly, it appears people have tried to hack the FULL VERSION OF AVG ANTI-VIRUS. The one offered in the ad that pop-ups and guys if you try to do that you will be locked out and it appears any version of AVG even AVG free will no longer work on your computer. (The above is just an observation, not a sure thing or proven by AVG/Grisoft)

Thirdly, please people download AVG Free Anti-Virus from a legitimate source such as CNET’s download.com

Hope that clears up this issue,

      Remy “Se7en”

    • Remy "Se7en" Says:

      Dear cantueso,

I am not going to delete any of theses messages because they explain a lot of confusion some people have e-mailed me about..

      Thanks for the comment,

      Remy “Se7en”

  23. cantueso Says:

All is working and all is fine. Today is the 18th, and depending on the AVG time zone, if I get through today with AVG intact, the registration incident will have been meaningless.

Thank you very much for all your help and patience…. but the 18th is not yet over.

    • Remy "Se7en" Says:

      Dear cantueso,

Sorry to be negative. I’ve been doing this a long time and registration for AVG Free does not make any sense at least the last downloadable version (8.5.406). Now saying that I can’t see into the future, there maybe a registration process in later AVG versions. But I imagine it will still probably be your choice.

By all means cantueso, I still would like to know ether way….

      Remy “Se7en”

  24. cantueso Says:

    ??? negative on what?

Now the 18th is over, it is the 19th, and my AVG is still installed and working, and so registration was not obligatory. I still can’t believe it is all over.

What does the last sentence mean? What would you like to know?

Anyway, if it had not been for your blog and the three step explanation, by now I would probably have given up. Last time I asked somebody for help here (in Spain)in a computer problem (the computer clock did not work), well, he lifted the computer up and began to s h a k e it.

So again, thank you very much for all the time you had to spend on this.

    • Remy "Se7en" Says:

      Dear cantueso,

Well the negative part was just a polite way of saying I knew I was right. Then the last part with this comment you just answered me. I wanted to know ether way if it worked or did not work out for you…

The last thing I wanted to say was your more then welcome anytime and I mean that just keep my e-mail address, and blog address handy and I’ll be around no worries.

      Later Dayz,

      Remy “Se7en”

  25. cantueso Says:

    Thank you
    Bye bye.
