July 28, 2008 at 6:26 PM |
Dear Dhariry,
Thanks for the heads up…I’ll re-look at it….in a bit….The post is based on
scans run on more then 25 computers….with the same configurations….
Thanks again,

I just downloaded the latest AVIRA Free version, and during installation it says that it does not scan emails… if you want that you have to upgrade to the pay version.
August 11, 2008 at 5:05 PM |
Dear jammer44,
Thanks for telling me…yeah…I just checked what you said out..that does
appear to be true…..It does not scan any type..of e-mail..in it’s free
version…thanks I’ll add it do the post….
But it is still better then AVG 8.0
Thanks again,

AVG 8 free edition now refuses to accept virus updates. It gives the message “a .bin file is missing”. AVG insists that it will not give any support to its free edition.
So I switched to Avira. I do not bother that my E-mail are not scanned because this service is performed automaticaly by my access provider.
August 16, 2008 at 9:30 PM |
Dear Jean Servanty,
Have you tried a registry scanner/fixer..to see if that fixes the errors….
Yeah I have never been a big fan of e-mail scanners…I’m not sure why…I don’t find them that helpful….
Thanks for the comment,
Se7en
August 17, 2008 at 2:50 AM |
Yes, I have uninstalled AVG 8, run “Advanced WindowsCare V2″ registry fix, reinstall AVG 8 but the error message remained. Maybe a coincidence, 2 days ago I applied Windows XP Service pack 3.
August 20, 2008 at 8:50 AM |
Hi, you say that Avira takes up a lot of resources, what readings are you getting? On the processes tab on my PC the readings, as I’m typing this,
are avgnt.exe 1meg and avguard.exe 8.1 meg, a truly light reading.
Scan time for a 40 gig drive 35 minutes.
I always used AVG but changed when they brought out the 8.0 behemoth that was using around 40 to 50 meg on my machine, Avira ‘free’ does not compare with AVG free regarding memory usage.
Regarding the add pop up http://www.elitekiller.com/files/disable_antivir_nag.htm
Cheers

August 22, 2008 at 3:07 PM |
Thanks. now i have to download Avira..
Looks like it’s better one..
free version of course.
August 22, 2008 at 8:35 PM |
Dear Tom,
I don’t know what to say…I tested it on 25 computers..with the same stats..and programs..not on a server…or network…and that was the results…but I’ll look in to it..my stats…were 66gig 5122 megs of rams….Pentium 4 processor MMX..I always test it on slowest computer…to see..what is the max and min results…it was not much better on the faster computers…and did not have much differences in speed..so I went with the best average results across the board…
sorry if you felt it was in-accurate…

Hi se7en
Thanks for your reply. I was only asking about the readings Avira takes up in your tests, not actually questioning your results, it was just out of interest. The only other task I can see Avira PE using up is sched.exe, with a tiny 524K
It seems there is a different opinion regarding resource usage for different antivirus software. I can only say that after using AVG for years and then abandoning it after the release of 8.0, I find Avira runs quite smooth on my old system…1.8 Duron, 768 ram, 40G hdd.
I use Ccleaner to clear out the trash and fix registry issues, Auslogics for defragging the drive and use Spywareblaster, Spyboy S+D, comodo firewall pro and superantispyware as a back up on demand scanner, all run together pretty smoothly.
I’m not sure if this makes any difference really, but it seems to work for me. Anyway, you have a great site and are doing a great job, you have my respect.
Kind regards
tom

I find that Avira nails a virus right away before it gets on the hard drive.
Now AVG on the other hand does not seem to notice its a virus until later on up to 10/30 minutes later or the next scan in most cases. Passes right through IE right past AVG right onto the hard drive.
I have been useing Avira free for years its great.
But i did try the new AVG free for a couple of days and it seems like its mickey mouse detection really sucks. A virus should not slip past the guard it fails as a virus scanner its junk!
Avira is a winner!
Go to web sites you know are infected and test them both out it is very easy to see which one actually works.
Thanks.
October 4, 2008 at 5:04 PM |
Dear Mr.Boo,
I hear ya…it does seem regardless..of official stats..that AVIRA..seems to have a much better automatic..or residential shield protection…I whole heartily agree..with that statement…
I did your test…..and it is very true….not only did it do better Virus check…but also spyware and adware….interesting….AVIRA..I’m saying…

hi there i have been using avira for quite some time impresive for a free version detection rate good it has found and got rid of all my viruses what i need to know is do i need any other internet security soft ware alongside it i was using a free version of norton 360 and it ran out will my computer still be protected and safe to use with only avira yours roy
November 2, 2008 at 7:59 PM |
Dear Roy,
I would say yes in most cases…but I always recommend..a registry scanner/fixer as well..because that is the only real virus..the freeware programs don’t get rid of very easily…or at all in some cases…
the problem with that…is all the freeware ones I have tried…don’t pass my tests…the only ones I would recommend are PC Tools…any of the different versions…they do cost money…but..once you buy it you got it for life..and it never runs out..
Hope that helps,
Se7en
November 3, 2008 at 3:40 AM |
hi thanks for your reply all iformation taken on board i am planing to buy some in future but was trying some free ones to see which one was best for me its good to know i am still quite safe i did notice after uninstuling norton 360 my computer seemed quicker
November 3, 2008 at 9:28 PM |
Dear Roy,
Yeah I bet, any all in one..software…takes up a lot of resources…even the basic version of the program…takes up a lot of CPU power..as well as paging..that is why I tell people to avoid that and Mcaffe ….and Norton…
Yours truly,
Se7en
November 9, 2008 at 7:46 PM |
hi, I was looking for articles comparing AVG and Avira as the latter was recommended to me and I must say this a great and comprehensive post
but I just want to ask whether I should uninstall first AVG before I install Avira, or run them both? Please help coz I really need a better AV program as my laptop had seizures the other day, thanks
November 9, 2008 at 9:57 PM |
Dear Hitomi,
Thanks….for the kind words..I do my best..
Now about AVG…you can have both on your system without issue…I have it on main XP PC…as a redundent Virus program…and for tech support….I also have it because sometimes one program picks up a viruses or other unwanted programs when the other program does not…
The only freeware programs that don’t play well with AVG free is that I have found so far are AVAST…and Pc Tools: Free Anti-virus…but there maybe more…(More then likly)
AVG Free can sometimes cause computers to seiz up….so if you want to start fresh..just un-install AVG then re-start..then go into programs folder in you c:/ drive..because it un-installs really sloppy..but you don’t have to re-start after that…
Thanks for the comment,
Se7en
November 10, 2008 at 7:51 AM |
whoa thanks that was a quick reply, I appreciate it…I’ll take your suggestion to uninstall AVG first then install Avira, I think one is enough for me.
just one last question, as quoted from your post, what does this exactly means?
[Can I do other things while running a scan ?]
AVIRA: not really
AVG: For sure you can
does it mean I can’t surf while running Avira? thanks a lot and I’m sorry if I’m asking a lot of things.
November 10, 2008 at 4:45 PM |
Dear Hitomi,
SORRY>>>>MADE A MISTAKE IN THE SUBJECT LINE….SORRY FOR THE FIRST E-MAIL
It means there maybe issue with running other applications while scanning…like Outlook, Limewire…or whatever….Internet is less impacted..but websites like http://www.ign.com will take forever…
There should be no over whelming issue..checking any freeware e-mail account..like hotmail, G-mail..unless you decide to download an attachment..which maybe slower…
Hope that clears things up,
Se7en
November 11, 2008 at 1:39 AM |

November 13, 2008 at 2:34 AM |

I personally recommend Avira Antivirus solution, I guess it’s my opinion but I like it much more than AVG solution. It’s true AVG seems to eat to much RAM compared with the previous versions. I’ve used it before and it was the best free antivirus. Now I really think that Avira can claim the first place for the best free antivirus solution.
January 18, 2009 at 11:14 PM |
Dear Avira Antivirus,
I agree with you …..100% AVIRA..is way better then AVG…

Dear Computersavvy
Great Blog, Really a lot of help. i have AVG and the other day i got nailed with a virus, AVG let it get downloaded and then let it spread through out my computer and didn’t even pick it up when i scanned afterwards, i had to find it myself and delete it. i will be going with Avira after reading this. also wondering which free registry cleaner/fixer would you recommend?
Thanks Again and keep up the good work
Chief
January 21, 2009 at 8:21 PM |
Dear Chief,
I don’t recommend any free registry/cleaner fixers…I never trust free registry stuff…that is the main part of your computer…I use PC tools..and it is worth every penny…it is like $50 USD…I get it free from work…but again it never expires and has updates..for life…..
Thanks for the kind words….hope I was able to help you out,

Actually I have avira on my pc and have experiencce of using antivirus software and find AVG a bit iffy because AVG sometimes gets killed of by some worms, Panda Antivirus sometimes a pc to reboot time and time again when you try to boot into windows at the start of the day so that is the reason that I chose to use Avira (GMBH) Antivirus on my pc but I will be switching to Microsoft Morrow Antivirus as soon as it becomes available as a service pack.

thank you VERY MUCH for the blog it was amazing. I fix alot of computers for friends and family (stop un-needed background programs and such) I will definitely be switching from recomending AVG to Avira from now on, avg 7.5 was nice but i am not liking 8.0. So you are saying Se7en, if a computer has AVG on it and I would like to switch to Avira I need to only uninstall AVG (from add or remove programs?), reboot computer, then install avira? No other removal needed? And this PC tools registry program, what exaclty does this do? Clean up registry? Thank you very much again
Raga
January 25, 2009 at 2:41 AM |
Dear Raga,
There are many many issues with AVG..8.0 and one of the issues is it is very sloppy program to un-install..meaning just add/remove…will not take it out in full…you need a registry cleaner…
to get rid of it fully..as well as you need to go into..the C:/ drive..and go to programs and remove the AVG or GRISOFT folders..then you’ll re-start your computer..and your good….
But even if AVG 8.0 still infects your computer..meaning there are files still there in the background AVG 8.0 will not have issue with AVIRA…They will run in tandem…but if you try AVAST…that is another story..they don’t play well together..and don’t believe for one second..the message by AVIRA or AVG….that say another Virus program detect….most un-install before ..proceeding..it is fine relax…
But if you have any paid anti-virus…then it will screw up your computer..FREE and PAID also don’t play well together…
Hope that helps,
Se7en

sorry for a second post please delete this one if you are bothered by the off topic (i could not find a way to personally message you).
I am looking at which firewalls to recommend to family and friends, for normal computer use (just browsing, myspace, occasional e-mail to family school work etc) would windows firewall be ok? Or would you recommend some other? (free please) thank you very much and again sorry
Raga
January 25, 2009 at 2:42 AM |
Dear Raga,
No personal at home user need a firewall…at all…it is over hyped..you could use AVAST ….as a shield….if you really want the best protection is if you are a network….password protect is…via the gateway..so no one can remotely accesses your router or network…is you don;t have a network…the really I would say..a firewall..will just cause you a headache..for downloading and navigating the web…if you do decide to go with a firewall..don’t go Zone Alarm please..it does not play well with any program…
u can set the gate way password..by using your default IP address…in your network and INTERNET setting…place said IP address in your Internet browser of choice..and place IP address in URL or web address area..at the top of the screen…
Hope that helps,
Se7en
January 25, 2009 at 11:55 AM |
Dear Se7en,
amazing amazing responses, god send blog. Thank you very much, I will be properly removing AVG 8.0 from a computers as you have recommended and allowing them to stick with the default windows firewall. To be honest each of the computers I work with go through a router for internet so its really not even needed. Thank you so much for the quick responses I will be spreading the given information generously, thanks again.

FYI AVG Update 8.0.233 breaks the network api getsockname
so many P2P software programs will not work when running
this software. AVG says they know about this problem but
it is not high on there list to fix.
February 12, 2009 at 3:56 PM |
Dear Dan Johnson,
Yeah I reported issues..with P2P files sharing a while back…but nothing huge..thanks for the heads up…
Also not high on there list is fixing the XP service pack 3 issue…

Thanks for all the info. I’ve been using Avira free for a couple of years and find it fairly efficient and unobtrusive except for the huge pop-up ad you mentioned. What’s the registry patch to kill the ad?

I have used both Avira GMBH and AVG 8.0 and had no problems but AVG seems to be disabled by very simple viruses, trojens or worms so use AVIRA if you want a fee antivirus or wait and get Microsoft Morrow Anti-Virus. If you want you can get Panda anti-virus but it too can get disabled very easily.

I have been using AVG 8.5 for a month, this anti virus is pretty good. AVG have good detect for so many virus, trojans, and other malware, I think. But, AVG is not good on healing the file which infected by virus/trojans.

it gets worse.
AVG now breaks another windows API,
getsockopt(fd, SOL_SOCKET, SO_ERROR, (char *)&iErrorCode, (socklen_t *) &iErrorCodeLen)) == 0)
when used on a connecting socket. It always returns no error, even if the socket is not connected.

Ok more research shows the brokenness affects select() also, but only for a connecting socket.
So select and getsockopt always return the socket is active, even though it is not connected when running the new AVG.

Laptop, 3 Gb ram, Core2 Duo by Intel, Vista
I run Avira (Free)and Avast(Free) together. Avira has resident shield enabled, Avast has resident shield disabled. Avira for residnet shield has very high detection rates. Avast for webshield and other features avira lacks. No conflicks no system drag.
Good so far.

Also, I use 2 antivirus on my system, AVG 8.5 and PCMAV 2.0. PCMAV is antivirus that established by PCMedia (computer magazine in my country). This antivirus especially could detect local virus, trojans and worm. It’s can detect at least 2614 variants of local malware. This is the best antivirus on my country, because ability to cure of infected file is perfect. All infected file that can be detected by this antivirus, 100% can be cured. If necessary clamAV can be integrated inside PCMAV. So, I have been using 3 antivirus on my system. Amazing combination (AVG and (PCMAV+ClamAV)), I think.
