Scam Watch: Warning – Your Hotmail Account May Have Just Been Hijacked/Hacked

Dear Readers,

(Last Updated Jan 10th, 2011 @ 10:50 pm EST) RC 3.5

I’ve just got a very alarming amount of e-mails claiming their account or accounts have been hacked. Or for some reason Hotmail or Live Mail are asking for more information from them.

Here is what I would do to check. Whether your Hotmail or Live Mail account has indeed been hijacked or compromised.

First off change all passwords Facebook, Banking, Paypal and anything else remotely connected to your Hotmail or  Live Mail Account. Because if it is indeed an hijack attempt ? It will have already been hacked or it will be very shortly.

- If you have installed the new Mozilla FireFox 3.6. There have been a lot of reports saying that their passwords or usernamess are no longer stored in the password section of FireFox 3.6 and then in that case you would indeed have to put in your username and or password again. The same can happen with Internet Explorer 7, 8 or 9.

- Try logging onto your account using a computer away from the main one you have been using, For example nothing on your home network or server. Because if it has a virus or some other computer related issue. You will find out just by logging on from another computer or Internet source.

Here is what you should do to asses the damages. Did you use your Hotmail or Live Account to ?

- Buy things from Amazon or e-Bay

- Do banking (any type)

- Complete PayPal transactions

Use another e-mail account and contact Hotmail with this concern. They can restore the default settings, if you can provide all the necessary information for them. That being some of the following.

- Postal code

- Country code

- Secret question answer

- Old password

- Username

- Cell/Mobile phone number

Here is are some reasons why you may have been hijacked and or made it easier for such an attack to happen to you

1. If you have not changed your password for more then 90 days.

2. If you have used that account when activating a classmates.com account or hi5.com account or even a FaceBook account

3. If you have not logged into your account for more then 120 days (This would be a legit reason Hotmail has closed you account)

4. If you did not use the log off button. Thus keeping your profile active and somebody who put in just your Username and or password would get direct access to your Hotmail account or Live Mail account.

Who to contact and what to do ?

The next step does depend on where you live. If you live in the USA there is a fraud sections of the F.B.I and part of Home Land Security.

If you live in Canada there really is no person you can call. Other then the RCMP and in the UK I really have no clue.

+ Your probably gonna need to hire a private fraud investigator…..

Let me know if you guys need any more help or of this has solved your problems. I would be more then happy to help any of you guys further via our comment section or by e-mailing us @ computer.savvy@hotmail.com

can u help whenever i try to relpy to an email hotmail shut down can u tell me why? do i have a virus hatched or as someone hacked my account

      Dear tina savitsky,

You may have a re-direct virus. That forces you away from your Hotmail page. But I honestly have never heard of that issue. It is also possible like you said that your account may have been hacked. But that is less likely due to the fact you can still get into your account.

Best run your virus and spyware scans to find out. I recommend AVG free 2011 for finding a virus and Spybot to find keyloggers and other bots that may cause your e-mail account to act that way. Also best clean your Internet cache.

      Hope that helps,

      Remy “Se7en”
