—- IF IT IS NOT COVERED HERE E-MAIL ME @ computer.savvy@hotmail.com OR TAKE A LOOK AT MY OTHER POSTS AVG ISSUES AND FIXES POSTS….

Ok, I’ve received a lot of comments on my series of posts on the topic of AVG Free Anti-Virus 8.5/9.0 So yes I know what you are thinking some of these fixes sound down right strange. But they are in fact all fixes and modifications. I’ve made for over 152,123 clients and counting that have contacted me so give it a shot or switch to AVIRA or AVAST….

(NOTE THAT IF YOU DO DECIDE TO FOLLOW ANY OF MY RE-FORMATTING OPTIONS…..BACK-UP YOUR DATAAND MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL THE DISK TO RE-INSTALL EVERYTHING…)

The following are ISSUES AND FIXES for both AVG 8.5/9.0 and the new AVG Free 9.0.722 & 8.5.431 . This post also still covers all the older updates too AVG Free Anti-Virus 8.5/9.0…..

AVG install or Un-install issues

- Do You Have To Un-install AVG Free Anti-Virus 8.5 Before Installing The New (9.0.716) Update ? (For full issue post please click on following linkFix)

- I Can’t Install/Un-install AVG 8.5/9.0 ? What Should I Do ? (For full issue post click on following linkFix)

- I can’t install/un-install AVG 8.0/8.5 ? What should I do ? (For full issue post click on following linkFix)

- How do I completely remove AVG Free from my computer ? (Fix: Here is the link to get the removal program from official AVG/Grisoft source http://www.avg.com/download-tools )

- My AVG (8.5.431) won’t update to the newest version…WHY? (Fix: http://computersavvy.wordpress.com/2009/03/12/how-to-go-about-installing-the-newest-version-of-avg-free-anti-virus-85-from-the-older-80-version/)

- I can’t un-install AVG at all or get the BSOD when ever I try (Fix: Here is the link to the AVG Free Forum to fix this issue http://freeforum.avg.com/read.php?12,172783,backpage=,sv= )

- Why do I get an error on Vista that Says “General Error, Not enough Free Memory”

  • The main reason is that you are not installing AVG in the Administrator mode…Vista is warning you, that you do not have the privileges to access that part in Window’s…So here is the fix…

(Fix: Use the Right mouse button and click the “OPTION” that says ” Run as Administrator“. There you go your now done and AVG should now install)

- Invalid or Cluttered Registry – All I mean by this is that even thou you have un-installed AVG 7, 7.5, 8.0, 8.5 or 9.0 it is still has an entry’s hidden in your core of your computer and sometime that cause AVG 8.5/9.0 to have a heart attack because it cause a conflict (Fix: If you have a registry fixer..run the scan and remove the invalid entry’s)

- Having an older version of AVG anyone (Fix: Un-install and restart computer, then go into C: drive and remove any AVG file folders with the word Grisoft, AVG 7.0, 7.5, 8.0, 8.5 or 9.0 AVG Root kit or AVG anti-spyware…Anything not AVG 8.5/9.0…then re-start and if you have a registry scanner..run again and then it should work)

- AVG un-installed incorrectly – all this means is that you may have installed AVG 8.0/8.5/9.0 only half way or after installing or un-installing AVG you did not re-start your computer ( Fix: Run registry scan, then install AVG then restart your computer

AVG Update Issue

- AVG Free Anti-Virus (8.5.431 0r 9.0.716) won’t update because AVG is missing .bin or control file (.crt) (Reason: AVG/Grisoft update server Issue - For full issue post click on following link – .bin file/.crt file full issue post

- I tried to update my AVG Free to version (8.5.431 or 9.0.716) and it keeps on asking me to restart my computer or icons disappears or are inactive. What is up with that ? (FixDownload the installation file from-http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afe -run the file on your computer and selectrepair installationoption in the 3rd install screen – proceed further and after installation finishes, restart your computer.

- I have tried to update AVG to the newest version (8.5.430 or 9.0.716) and it is downloading really slowly or not at all… (Fix: Close everything related to the Internet. Also make sure to un-check the DNS Update box..in Advance setting..then re-start AVG 8.5 and it should fix the issue)

- While installing the new PROGRAM UPDATE (8.5.430 or 9.0.716) during installing the update my AVG icons turn RED or shows ! errors (Fix: Relax…during the PROGRAM UPDATE process that is normal and AVG might even take a computer re-start. Before the icons and or errors turn back to the normal green colour.)

- I tried to Update AVG Free Anti-Virus (8.5.431) and I get the following Message “ Access is forbidden to server (Fix: Q+A: AVG Update – ” Access is forbidden to server”)

- I tried to update my AVG Free to version (8.5.431 or 9.0.716) there seems to be major lag or AVG gets stuck in a loop during updating (Fix: there is no need to fret…just relax and your AVG will update..I imagine the servers are rammed…hold your breath and it will update)

- I have an invalid “CTF” or Update control file. (FixIf you receive the “Invalid update control CTF file” message during AVG update, most probably the update control files are corrupted. In this case it is necessary to delete these files. During a next attempt to update AVG, new control files should be downloaded and update process should be completed without any difficulties.)

Please kindly follow these steps to delete mentioned control files :

1. Download the utility from the link below to your hard drive deleteupdatefiles.exe

2. Run the downloaded utility (command line window will appear for a short time)

3. Try to update the AVG program

  • If the issue persists, then please follow steps below:

4. Double-click the My computer icon on your desktop (or open Start -> My Computer)

  • Navigate to the following folder:
  • *Windows XP / 2000:

C://Documents and Settings All UsersApplication Dataavg8updatedownload *

  • Windows Vista:

C://ProgramDataavg8updatedownload *

  • Find the avginfoavi.ctf and avginfowin.ctf files and delete them
  • Restart your computer

- AVG gives me a .Bin file error or general error not enough memory (Fix: First disable your Windows firewall… then Just disable the DNS Update from the TOOLS section in the Advance settings section of AVG 8.0/8.5/9.0) THANKS TO BEN FOR THAT FIX

- Running any Internet connected program, when you are trying to update AVG – (Fix: Close all Internet connect programs and count to 20. So like 1,2,3,4. Then run update again “YES I KNOW” Sounds Really LAME and it probably sounds LIKE I’M yanking your chain..but it does sometime works)

- AVG shows there are no new updates available (Fix: make sure the data/time and time zone is set on your computer correctly) THANKS TO Jelth FOR THAT FIX

- Can’t connect to AVG server to update to the new patch  (9.0.716)..and or can’t update virus definitions (Fix: I’ve been told it is because the AVG server is being overwhelmed..and it took me 4 times to do both the AVG program update and the Virus Update so….relax..it probably is not your computer..but I’m going to keep my eye on it..to see if it continues to be an issue…)

- Running P2P software during the time when your suppose to be running a scheduled scan or an automatic scan (Fix: all that means is if you are running a scan at 6pm don’t run uTorrent, LimeWire or FrostWire when your scanning or updating…you can do it after)

- I can’t update AVG..it always has a red ! Astrix on the AVG tray icon (Fix: Make sure you run AVG update during different time then your automatic scan..like make sure..Automatic update is not 5:30 or 5am and automatic scan is the same time..instead make sure it is set too at least an 1hr and 45min difference ) THIS DOES WORK…I FEEL SO STUPID, THAT I DID NOT THINK OF THIS BEFORE

- AVG keeps on showing error after error while installing the new update to (8.5.431 or 9.0.716) (Fix: Leave it be and wait while each update is being installed and Archived. It will show random errors. But relax this is normal and by the end of the installation/upgrade process. All the icons should turn back too green and no .Bin file errors should be present.)

- What should I install first the VIRUS DEFINITION or PROGRAM UPDATE (The best thing to do is install the Virus Definition update first. Then the new PROGRAM update to (8.5.431 or 9.0.716)

AVG Program Conflicts and or Compatibility Issues

- I am running 64 bit version of Vista and I keep getting errors ? What should I do ? -Unconfirmed for new 9.0.704 version- (Fix: Make sure you have the 64 bit version of AVG Installation file…I have not seen one but I have been told there is one available)

- I just installed AVG Free Anti-Virus (9.0.704) or automatically/manually updated to AVG Free Anti-Virus (9.0.716) Why does MSN Messenger links no longer works ?

Fix:

1. Make sure you don’t have any other virus program installed. If you do un-install it and then re-start your computer.

2. After your computer has re-started make sure there are no more file folders hanging around from old virus program.

3. If so delete them and then re-start your MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger.

———————————————————————————

If your MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger still does not work:

1. Fully un-install your MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger

2. Then re-start your computer

3. Re-install MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger sand make sure you check off all items other then family filters option

4. You should not have to re-start your computer. But if it ask you by all means re-start your computer.

—————————————————————————————————————

- Running Spybot Search & Destroy Any version WITH TEA TIMER ENABLED (Fix: un-install SPYBOT and re-install with out TEA TIMER ENABLED )

- AVG Free randomly shuts down my computer for no reason (Fix: Make sure all firewall allow AVG to connect for updates…also makes sure you only have one Virus scan installed at a time)

- AVG free ant-virus does not work….I have another paid or trialware Anti-Virus program installed on my computer ie. NORTON, Mcafee, ECT (Fix: Yeah AVG free does not play well with others virus scan or spyware, adware programs for that matter. So un-install the program or programs and then try to re-install AVG it should work. ) Thanks to Sylar For bringing up the Vista issue..that Vista has NORTON 360 trialware or full version sometimes pre-installed on the hard-drive..thous AVG free had a conflict and was not working…

- Running any other type of Anti-Virus or spyware Program other then AVG 8.5/9.0 (Fix: ONLY RUN AVG 8.5/9.0 & MAKE SURE ALL OTHER VIRUS OR SPYWARE programs are un-installed)

1. Press Start Button

2. Choose Control Panel

3. Go to the System

4. Choose Advanced System Setting

5. Then Advanced

6. Then click on Startup and Recovery

7. Press Settings

8. System failure and uncheck the box “Automatically restart“.

——————————————————————————————

AVG Windows XP Pro Issue

- ( Grisoft/AVG says it is not an issue..you guys can decide for yourself) You are Running Windows XP Pro and not Windows Home edition – (Fix: Non-that I can think of  unless you have a DELL system XP Home edition disk and are willing to format and start over again. (Again not recommended…but I have done this also) ( I was told by one of my programmers that this is because Grisoft has put a stop code in the AVG 8.0/8.5 Free edition so it can only be used for non-business computers and it does make a little sense) ( If you read the terms of use of the software it says for PRIVATE HOME USE ONLY…hey there is the CATCH 22) SHOULD NO LONGER BE AN ISSUE

AVG Windows Vista Issues

- AVG is my computer to Loop or hang during my computer Start-up (Fix: Disable the “restart automatically on error“) -Follow the following steps to disable-

1. Press Start Button

2. Choose Control Panel

3. Go to the System

4. Choose Advanced System Setting

5. Then Advanced

6. Then click on Startup and Recovery

7. Press Settings

8. System failure and un-check the box “Automatically restart“.

——————————————————————————————

- AVG does not have a scan option on the main AVG User Interface (Fix: So far you have to do it manually via tools option or you can run an automatic scan via the schedule scan)

- AVG keep on asking me to re-start my computer (Fix: So far I have only seen this in relation to Vista Home Premium has this issue and it seems to only be an issue with automatic update and not manual update)

AVG Window’s Vista Service Pack issue

- I can’t install AVG Free or AVG Paid and just got a new Vista PC whats up with that ? (Fix: relax and install Vista Service Pack 1. Even thou your computer operating system box, tech head or store says VISTA Includes Service Pack 1 came with your system. IT DID NOT. So do a Full VISTA UPDATE.

1. It will take 2 or 3 updates to get the option to install VISTA SERVICE PACK 1 or 2.

2. Then your system will re-start or will ask you to re-start and it will install SERVICE PACK 1 in 3 stages -Same goes for Vista Service pack 2-. Which are very visible Windows indicating which step you are on 1,2 or 3 and what % is done.

3. Relax again and let Window’s do it’s thing.

4. Then try to install AVG FREE or AVG PAID and it should work.

AVG Window’s Xp Service Pack issues

- Just installed AVG on my XP with service pack 3 will it work?…because in the past versions of AVG Free gave me errors or would not update at all (News link http://computersavvy.wordpress.com/2009/02/27/avg-free-anti-virus-seems-to-now-work-part-time-on-xp-service-pack-3-with-new-avg-version-80237/ )

- I just installed service pack 3 for Windows Xp and now AVG 8.5/9.0 will not work, open up or even update… (Fix: There is no fix, Service pack 3 for WINDOWS XP is not in anyway compatible with this program…any version…the new patch (8.5.431 or 9.0.716 ) does not fix this issue.

- You don’t have Windows Service Pack 2 or 3 installed and or is corrupted (Fix: Install Service pack 2) (Easy to download it from the Windows Update Website…But it is better just to get the CD….)

AVG Scanning Issues

- Is It Normal To Have Two Or More AVG Free Processes Running At The Same Time Such As “AVGCSRVX.EXE” ? (For full issue post click on following linkFix)

- AVG Free Reports are turned off !!! How do I turn them back on ? (Same fix as below)

- AVG Free Keep on turning itself off. How do I fix it ? (Fix underneath)

Fix

1. Right click on the Command Prompt and select “Run as administrator” from the menu list…

2. Type the following command:
winmgmt /verifyrepository

3. If the system returns “WMI repository is not consistent”

4. Run the following command:
winmgmt /salvagerepository

5. The first time this is run, it will fail and then it will issue the commands to the services that are causing it to fail. It will likely take a few minutes for the services to shut down.

6. Run the command again, its possible that you may have to run this several times to get it to complete on its own.

7. When finished, reboot the system.

8. Your Done

———————————-

- AVG scan log say it is corrupted (Fix: If this is the first time..try to run scan again..most of the time I found it..only happens if there are other PC factors like..lose of power, your computer re-started after Windows update agent, your computer turned off to prevent damage..like over heating..major issue for older laptops) in most cases it will fix itself..so relax..if this is the first time..if not..look at the rest of the Issues and fixes…

(Fix 2: Run registry scan and look for .DLL errors or Win/32 errors or try Un-install AVG 8.0/8.5/9.0 and try to re-install )

- Choosing the option in AVG (8.5.430 ) to only scan infected files (Fix: un-check this box in the scanning option this option is only to be used to scan infected files after AVG picks up something..and other then this…it prevents the scan from running properly)

- AVG is taking up to 8 hrs to scan a hard drive under 500 gig “what’s up with that?” (Fix: Change setting from slow/normal scan to fast scan. I have found no real different between the slow and normal scan methods. Other then it does not scan archive files in fast mode. When in fast mode could be an issue with some people )

- Why does AVG free 8.5.430/9.0.716 maxs out my CPU or CPUs during  a full virus scan ? (Reason: AVG first is handicapped because it is freeware…and second…just think it instead of running on scan..for Viruses..it is running 3 at the same time..one for VIRUS, SPYWARE, and ADWARE..that is one of the many reasons it so slow ) This is by no means the opinion of AVG/Grisoftbut instead the Opinion of SE7EN, RAVEN, GHOST, and ACE and this was discovered as a result of many, many scans and tests..on XP and VISTA computers..including a single core processor, a dual core processor and a quad core processor…all of which maxed out while running AVG Free Anti-Virus Version 8.0.138, 8.0.169, 8.0.173, 8.0.175 and 8.0.176, 8.0.233, 8.0.234, 8.0.237, 8.5.276, 8.5.278, 8.5.283, 8.5.285, 8.5.287, 8.5.325, 8.5.336, 8.5.339 8.5.374, 8.5.386, 8.5.3 87, 8.5.392 8.5.406, 8.5.408, 8.5.409, 8.5.420, 8.5.421, 8.5.423, 8.5.424, 8.5.425, 9.0.686, 9.0.689, 9.0.704, 9.0.707, 9.0.709, 9.0.716 and 9.0.717

- AVG scan only last for a few seconds then it stops. Scanning zero files (Fix: Leave the settings as is and see if it happens again. If it does make sure there is nothing running in the background during the AVG scan. Nothing should be updating. No other virus scan running. If there are shut them all down. For Example I was running AVIRA set on GUARD MODE and AVG THOUGHT AVG HAD ALREADY DONE AN AUTOMATIC SCAN OR WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A SCAN. SO IT JUST STOPPED SCANNING)

- AVG scanner Tray icon shows it is scanning, but it is not…WTF (Fix: Close AVG and re-start. Your system may need to be fully re-started to re-activate AVG’s main interface and or residential shield )

AVG keeps on asking me to re-start my computer

- AVG 8.5/9.0 Keeps on asking me to Re-start my computer and I am running Windows Xp Pro or Xp Home with Service pack 3 installed (Fix: So far there are no fixes other then disabling automatic update and doing it manually..yes it is annoying…but it works ) Should no longer be a major issue with new update 8.5.431/9.0.717

- AVG keeps on asking me to restart my computer..what is up with that ? (Fix: Well provided it is not a update or patch you may have the wrong box check off in the update section of AVG..to fix this do the following )

1. Open AVG user interface Via the Right mouse button on the AVG system tray icon

2. Go to Tools

3. Choose Advanced Settings

4. Then go to the last section called UPDATE

5. Then click on the Update

6. Then look at the section that says WHEN TO UPDATE FILES

7. Make sure the options is checked that says Update immediately - Required Confirmation from the USER

- I have dial-up….why can’t I update my AVG to new program update or virus definition?

1. Open AVG user interface by click on the tray icon with the RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON

2. Go to TOOLS…it is the 4th option to the right on the very top

3. Click

4. Go to the option that says ADVANCED SETTINGS which is the last option in the TOOLS

5. Then go to the last subsection called UPDATE

6. Then choose the option DIAL-UP

7. Click

8. Now make sure you check off the option that says USE DIAL-UP CONNECTION

9. Next make sure…if you want too..make sure…you don’t stay on-line costing you lots of $$$$ then check off the box that says…CLOSE DIAL-UP CONNECTION WHEN DONE

10. Now Go to APPLY then OK…then your done..now try to run an UPDATE manually first then..set a time..and see if automatic update works…if not you’ll have to do it manually

- Running any Internet connected program when you are trying to update AVG – (Fix: Close all Internet connect programs…count to 20..so like 1,2,3,4 then run update…YES I KNOW…LAME and it sounds LIKE I’M yanking your chain..but it sometime works…)

AVG Browser & Link Scanner Issues

- FireFox 3.0/3.5 keeps on freezing I have Zone Alarm installed!!! What should I do?—-(Fix: Un-install Zone alarm then try..if FireFox still does not work re-start your computer then try again it should work with no issues)

- AVG Link Scanner is not working with the new FireFox 3.0.15 0r FireFox 3.5.6 Update !!!

Fix:

1. Update AVG there is a new Link Scanner Major Update

2. Make sure your AVG Security Toolbar & AVG Safe Search is enabled in the FireFox 3 Add-ons section

3. Enable both (AVG Security Toolbar & AVG Safe Search)

4. Re-start FireFox 3/3.5

5. It should work now…it appears in the test that Ghost and Raven have done showed that AVG Safe Search and AVG Security Toolbar won’t work in most cases if  both are not enabled.

- AVG crashes your web browser (Fix: Disable AVG LINK SCANNER and AVG SAFE SEARCH then restart your browser..then you should be good)

- AVG LINK SCANNER does not work on Mozilla FireFox 3.0/3.5…yepper not supported..but it was a terrible program in the first place… (Fix: None…I guess you could download..another one like it from Norton..or other such…but I don’t recommend it..it will slow..down your Internet browser loading time…) SHOULD NO LONGER BE AN ISSUE It is compatible now with the new patch/update to 8.0.169, 8.0.173, 8.0.175. 8.0.176, 8.0.233, 8.0.234,  8.0.237,8.5.276, 8.5.278, 8.5.283, 8.5.285, 8.5.287, 8.5.325, 8.5.336, 8.5.339, 8.5.364, 8.5.374, 8.5.386, 8.5.3 87, 8.5.392, 8.5.406, 8.5.408, 8.5.409, 8.5.420, 8.5.421, 8.5.422, 8.5.423 , 9.0.686, 9.0689, 9.0.704, 9.0.707, 9.0.709, 9.0.716 and 9.0.717

AVG Internet COOKIE Issues

- Why does AVG pick up more Internet COOKIES on Vista then XP? (Reason: It appears that AVG 8.0/8.5/9.0 free was made for Vista users and it seems to pick up way more cookies in both Firefox 3/3.5 and IE 7, 8) GO FIGURE

- AVG no longer finds FireFox 3/3.5 cookies and went from higher detection rate to a rate as low as 3 cookies (Fix: There is no fix other then to delete the cookies via FireFox tools option or via Spybot or other such programs and no worries…thous programs do a lot better job then AVG anyhow )

- AVG deletes all my FireFox 3/3.5 cookies (Fix: un-check delete tracking cookies…or disable Automatic Scan SHOULD NO LONGER BE AN ISSUE

- Internet Cookies will not delete if you are using Mozilla FireFox 3 (Fix: Use manual way to delete cookies, but Internet Explorer cookies will delete with AVG 8.0)

AVG E-Mail Scanner Issues

- My email scanner is set to scan Microsoft Outlook, but I am using Outlook Express. So now I am no longer getting messages at the bottom of my incoming emails to say they have been scanned/checked by AVG.

Fix: If your system had this default setting it would have installed automatically….

In the Windows Internet Options ( in the Control Panel and available in IE’s Tool menu ) change your default email client to Outlook Express….

OK, Outlook Express…. You need to be using just the ‘Personal E-mail Scanner’ service….

You can reconfigure the email scanner installed by…

1. Download & save the latest AVG Free installation package from this link [www.avg.com]
2. Run the AVG Free install file
3. Choose the Add/Remove components option and follow the setup wizard until you reach the email area
4. Select Advanced, then add the email plug-in you want and remove the others (only have one installed at a time) and finish the wizard.
5. Restart your computer then test…

Download the install file to your computer… do not ever try to run from the Internet as that will always cause issues. We also recommend that you do not run if from a directory with spaces in the name.. such as your Desktop or My Documents folders.

- AVG e-mail scanner no longer works or says patch or file is missing (Fix: Un-install AVG, Restart computer and re-install….then update and it should have the e-mail scanner re-activated and working ) SHOULD NO LONGER BE AN ISSUE

AVG Blue Screen Of Death Issue

AVG causes the Blue Screen Of Death To Appear (Fix: RESTORE LAST RESTORE POINT…provided of course…you don’t have to format your whole computer) For more information on this issue…please go to the following post http://computersavvy.wordpress.com/2008/06/11/avg-80-free-anti-virus-blue-screen-of-death-warning-expalined-some-fixes/

For a week, at least, I have been trying in vain to download AVG free 8.0. Everytime I get told it will take 4,6, or 12 hors to download. but after 15 minuts or so it shows download complete, (showing a smaller file) when I run it goes to the “files corrupted” Is this all just a Grisoft trick to get me to pay out money I don’t have? I was notified of the change to 7.5 about a week before May 31.

(I checked with Avast but it too needs a 12 hour download.

    Is there a disk availibil?

Al, (Pentium 4, Windows XP SP1,2,3, Dial up high speed.) A regular unemplyed handicapped guy who went to college before PCs.

  4. Se7en Says:

  7. Les Gunn Says:

AVG Free 8.0 would not save config changes, or save updates, or scan anything on my Win 2K PC. Changed the C drive from FAT32 to NTFS, and everything started working fine. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307881 to use the CONVERT command.
Thanks for your blog, it is a good summary of all the tips I have found for this problem. I hope AVG move quickly to provide support for FAT/FAT32 disks soon.

  8. Se7en Says:

    Dear Les Gunn,

I’m not sure why AVG does not work for Fat…but normally it is because there are 2 different versions of the same software as in most cases with this type of software….

I’m glade you enjoyed my blog…I try real hard to keep up to date..and making the best place for this issue and many others….

    thanx again,

  9. daveleau Says:

    Se7en,

Is it true that you cannot run AVG 8.0 Free when you have 2000 Pro or XP Pro? Both of my home computers came with the Professional versions. If that’s the case, AVG was very short-sighted in their design of the software, as most home workstations have the Professional OS.

    Thanks for the great info,
    Dave

  10. Se7en Says:

    Dear Dave,

I just e-mailed you..so check your inbox….but to the point..no matter what AVG/Grisoft says…there is an overwhelming % of people running Windows XP Pro who..can not run AVG 8.0 no matter what they do…the facts are about 98.2 % of people from my survey anyhow…and just from from my computer lab..that is not networked or on a server…only 1 out of 100..have AVG 8.0 that still works on it…that is sad because…I had 50% before..the newest update..

    Thanks for the comment,

    Se7en

  11. Edenwood Says:

I had AVG 7.5 free, which worked perfectly, but had to update to 8.0.100 when the former was discontinued. The Update feature worked for a while; then stopped working. Now I have 8.0.138 but update still won’t work. Here’s the entire scenario.

    THE PROBLEM

AVG Version 8.0.138 will not update, even by preopening the Internet connection (dial-up). AVG displays the message that the connection with the update server has failed. Previously, I had Version 8.0.100, but I downloaded a later version because it would not update either.

    The message reads as follows:

The connection with the update server has failed. Please follow these steps:
    - Make sure your internet connection is active, please try to open the http://www.avg.com website.
    - Try to run the update later or schedule an automatic update for another time.
    - Make sure the connection parameters are set properly.

I followed the steps but to no avail.

    SYSTEM INFORMATION

Operating System: Windows 2000 Professional, Version 5.0 SP4
    PC: Pentium 4, 786 RAM, 1.8 gHz
    AVG Version: 8.0.138 Standard Installation
    Virus DB: 270.4.5/1533
McAfee Firewall with Guardian: Version 4.02.6000.0 (AVG executables have full unfiltered access)
    Internet Connection: Dial-up (Internet America)

    PREVIOUS PROTECTION SOFTWARE

Over several years, I have had the following protection software installed:
    Bazooka
    Adware Scanner
    Ad Aware
    Spyware Blocker
    Spybot
    Spyware Guard
    AVAST Antivirus
    McAfee Antivirus
    Norton Antivirus

All these were removed before I installed AVG 7.5.

The following software was installed but stopped when when I installed AVG 8.0.100:
    MS Antispy
    MS Blast
    Spyware Guard

These were uninstalled before AVG 8.0.138 was installed.

    BACKGROUND

I had AVG 7.5, which performed perfectly. When it was discontinued, I installed AVG 8.0.100 on 5/31/2008, and updates worked until 7/4/2008; then AVG would no longer update. Other AVG functions “seemed” to be working, but I can’t be sure.

STEPS I PERFORMED TO TRY TO FIX THE PROBLEM

    1) Starting with AVG 8.0.100, ran the repair in the installation file. The database version rolled back, and update still would not work.
    2) Uninstalled MS Antispy, MS Blast, and Spyware Guard.
    3) Uninstalled AVG 8.0.100, rebooted, stopped all memory resident programs, and reinstalled AVG 8.0.100.
    4) Tried the update with the McAfee firewall stopped.
    5) Downloaded and installed AVG 8.0.138 on 7/9/2008. It worked for a few days and then stopped working, as described at the beginning of this post.
    6) Rebooted. AVG showed that the database had been updated and Update Manager was up-to-date but it really wasn’t.
    7) Kicked off Update again and again. Sometimes AVG dialed the modem and usually it didn’t before coming back with the error message: “Update connection failed.”
    8) Tried the repair in the Build 138 installation file again. The virus database version rolled back. Update still wouldn’t work.
    9) Downloaded Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool and ran it to make sure my PC was infected with something that was preventing AVG from installing and/or operating correctly. The MS software found no problems.
    10) Uninstalled AVG 8.0.138 in preparation for doing a reinstall. However, this time I got (noticed?) a Warning when the uninstall finished. It read as follows:
Installation: Warning: Action failed for file avgmfx86.sys: stopping service … Service AVGMfx86 failed to process during stopping at checkpoint 0 ) (wait hint 10000 ms) in 91000 ms.
    11) Rebooted, stopped all memory resident programs, and reinstalled AVG 8.0.138. Update still wouldn’t work.

I’ve tried everything within my limited knowledge trying to figure out what could be preventing AVG 8.0 Update Manager from working (the system scan “seems” to be working).

What can be the problem? Please help me.

PS: I would like to run a registry fixer but I’m chicken. Can you recommend one that is safe, safe, safe?

    Thank you,
    Edenwood

    Hi computersavvy,

Could youp please email me the tips you sent to Edenwood. I have the same problem, was using AVG 7.5, upgraded to 8.0.100 but now my updates dont work. I download my updates and then manually update my PCs, to which are Windowx XP Prof SP2, even automatic update does not work, as Edenwood also described.

I like AVG because it does not slow my system down like Norton did and would like to continue to use it. Is there a way to resolve my update problem taking into consideration I download all my updates and do the upldates manually using the update from directory option in AVG.

    Thanks awaiting your reply

AVG free version 8 will not update, I uninstalled the program and downloaded a new copy but it still will not update and is 3 weeks overdue for updates, I think AVG Version 8 is more trouble than it’s worth, I never had any problems with Version 7.5 or Avast. Thanks Martin

P.S. It is great that you are trying to help people here, many thanks.

  26. Se7en Says:

    Dear Martin,

You hit the nail on the head…AVG/Grisoft should just go back to 7.5…

    thanks

  30. Se7en Says:

    Dear Shoma,

You are indeed….one of many..who have asked..for this help….none the less….have you tried to up date AVG with manual update….and what system are you running…XP pro or XP home or Vista….

    If this does not help,

    e-mail me again…and I’ll forward…the other e-mail….about registry scanners and such…

Hope to hear from you real soon,

    Se7en

  31. Dave Says:

I should tell you that I run XP Pro SP3 with FF 3.0 with no problems EXCEPT that AVG 8.0 will not run a scheduled scan, it runs a manual scan of one disk (any of my disks) just fine. Hope that helps you figure out what is going on.

  32. Se7en Says:

    Dear 87 aggie,

Just sent you an e-mail check your inbox and get back to me…..

    hope that helps,

    Se7en

  33. Se7en Says:

    Dear Dave,

You are not able to run automatic scan because you are running Windows XP PRO…..I’m even surprised you can run manual scan…..

The reason being..AVG does not run on business computers and Windows XP Pro is a business version…and in the terms and agreements that you say ok to when you install AVG..it says that it is for only private at home use…..

But at the same time…I have to say…..around 90% of computers with PRO will not run AVG 8.0 at all…and 5% will run manual scan only and the last 5% will run automatic scan only…

    Hope that helps….

PS. AVG/GRISOFT…..HAS NEVER AGREED WITH THE ABOVE STATEMENT…BUT I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE that has said there is a issue with XP PRO……

    Hope this helps,

    Se7en

  34. Se7en Says:

OH, AND THAT DOES NOT EVEN COVER…THE LARGE % OF PEOPLE WHO CAN NOT UPDATE AVG……WITH XP PRO…

    Using: Windowx XP Home SP2

I download all my updates and do the updates manually using “the update from directory” option in AVG. That works but it is not the way.

I’ll hope you can sent me the right tips

    Thanx!

    Computersavvy:

I’m another one of those poor people who is running XP Pro (SP2) and can’t get my “new and improved” version of AVG (8.0.138) to update – it seems to scan, but it keeps giving me the “computer needs restart” window with no results. I’ve uninstalled it, tried to change the update parameters – nothing works, You seem to have a fix, and I’d love to find out what it is.

Would you mind sending it to me, as well? (I must be around #300 to ask you this….LOL)

    CoolPoolNorm

  41. Mike Says:

    Hello Mr Computersavvy,
I too am perplexed about AVG free not updating automatically. I thought this had to do with the “free” vs the “paid” version. If you have a solution, I would be grateful to hear it.

    Thank you.

    Mike

  42. Se7en Says:

    Dear Mike,

It seems that in a lot of cases..ppl are having to update manually..not sure why…but what ever works RIGHT…

  43. Pat Says:

    Dear computeersavvy,

I fear I have the same problem with automatic updating of AVG 8.0 free. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it only worked for a few days and then reverted to its old tricks. It keeps asking for a restart but even after restarting it still says the antivirus and antispyware are out of date. I am running windows XP home edition. I would really appreciate it if you could help.

    Thanks a million.

  44. Se7en Says:

    Dear Pat,

It looks like…it is an update issue….

by this I mean….it works until you run..AVG update manager…then you say it..stops working..normally that happens with certain versions of Vista and Windows XP PRO….it could be a corruption…or you could be running..other internet program in the background you may not even know..is running or updating…

Well…if you can’t get it to work…you would be better off using AVIRA..which I use or..AVAST..which is the standby..but can be a bit of a bugger to set-up Automatic scan…

Sorry I can not offer you any more concert fixes…

    thanks for the comment,

    Se7en

That one normally fixes most of the issue..but cost money….

if not let me know…your computer stats….and what programs you are running….don’t forget to look at my blog section call AVG issues and fixes…it may shed some more light..

    Hope that helps,

  50. Se7en Says:

    Dear Jim,

Your more then welcome, Zone Alarm has always been a thorn in the side of program compatibility and stability..ZONE ALARM hates tons of programs and will not…Run in tandem with many….and free programs seems to be the most hit…

  51. Mitchell Dawn Says:

Could you please email info on how to get updates to work for avg 8. Connection error. I have Dial up I don’t know if this is the problem.

    Thanks
    Mitchell

  52. Se7en Says:

    Dear Mitchell,

I’m sorry to say…it is probably your dial up…because..the way dial-up works…is in short bursts…instead of…long streams…causing hesitations in the update process..that in turn can cause errors…

    But…first

    1. Try to run manual update on AVG 8.0…

    2. Uninstall AVG then re-install…

    Well I hope that helps,

  54. Se7en Says:

    Dear RACHMAT,

    Try to uninstall it..AVG I mean….but it may be a compatibility issue..or it could..be an unstable registry…

If you tell me your computer stats…I can probably help out more..

    Hope to hear from soon,

    Hi,
I’m also one of a number of people having trouble updating avg 8. Have had it for a few months and been no issue until now. At 1st it was saying a bin file was missing then started saying server connection failed. Have tried updating manually and uninstalled and reinstalled but still noe working. I’m using windows XP home. Can anyone help please?

  56. Se7en Says:

    Dear annoyedaussie,

Yeah..the .bin file issue has been coming up a lot lately..not sure why…but AVG is know to cause….Registry error…and other then getting and trying a registry scanner/fixer.. Which works in a large % of people with both the .bin file error..and not being able to update….

If you are still having issues…let me know what programs you are running and all of your computer stats..including internet connection type..dial-up and so on..

    Hope that helps,

  57. MrFixit Says:

I have XP Pro OEM SP3 on 4 of the 5 PCs in my house, all have been updating AVG 8 Free just fine until this morning, then one failed (Connection to server error). All the computers connect through a Linksys Router and Motorola cable modem. The solution I found was to go to Tools>Advanced settings…>Proxy and change the setting from “Don’t use proxy” to “Try connection using proxy and if it fails, connect directly”. I have no idea why this worked but AVG updated perfectly. I will keep you informed if this continues to allow updates on this computer. I hope this helps others with the same problem.

  58. Se7en Says:

    Dear MrFixit,

Thanks very much..I really appreciated the help…and heads up….on that fix…

Thanks again and be sure to let me know if it stays that way,

    Thanks a mil….

    Rocky

  62. Se7en Says:

  63. SANDY Says:

Hi, Can you please advise if it is possible to resolve the problem of getting Update Manager to Update automatically (version AVG 8.0.138) : I have tried several times to ’save changes’ under the ‘Update Manager Settings’ i.e selecting the ‘At a specific time interval’ button, selecting a time which usually gives notification – ‘The selected update frequency is invalid. Allowed values are 15-60 for minutes and 1-24 for hours). I alter the time, then select ’save changes – all to no avail!

  64. Se7en Says:

    Dear Sandy,

Hi, yeah you should check to make sure that there is a check mark in the box that says START AUTOMATIC UPDATES….Don’t worry about the Time intervals…I have it set to 5:30am and it has never updated even close to that time..for the life of AVG 8 has been out…..

You may also have to try to do the updates manually..to do that..un-check the box…that says START AUTOMATIC UPDATES…and it just may do the trick for u…

If you are more computer savvy..you may want to head over to the GRISOFT website..and manually download both the new product update to 8.0.169….make sure to follow the instructions…then you should install the newest Virus definitions….yes it is frustrating but after a few times..it seems like a walk in the park…

Those tips may help provided of course you don’t have Window’s Xp PRO or Service Pack 3..installed…

    Hope that helps,

and by all means after you receive this, by all means let me know how it goes or if you require further assistance..

    Thanks for the comment,

    Thanks,
    Zuhair

  68. Se7en Says:

    Dear Zuhair,

in order for me to help you…I need to know…what operating system you are using….

like Windows XP HOME or PRO…have you installed service pack 3 or not…..

because if you have service pack 3 installed…or have XP PRO…that is the reason avg will not automatic update…….

but it should manual update..provided you have un-checked the auto update box….

Please let me know..and get back to me…

  72. Dean Says:

I have free avg 8.0.173 running on windows xp. Every now and then I get a window that pops up and says that avg was unable to update, not connected to the Internet, even though, I am connected to the internet. Is there a way to fix this problem? When I manually update the avg program it does not have any problem.

  73. Se7en Says:

    Dear Dean,

    1. Did you install service pack 3….for XP?…..

    2. What type of Internet connection..do you have ?

If you have dial-up there is a way to fix the issue…if not..you could try turning off..the DNS…..option…it should still update..just with another method…and that process should be in my main AVG post…

    Hope that helps,

and if not…by all means send me another e-mail..and I’ll get more info…

I just installed avg and tried to update it. the update is 33.4mb. if am to download this non stop itll take me around 12 days cause my internet speed is very slow. Am thinkingnof downloading the updates from the avg site with a resumable download software, but even if i download it how would i install the updates

  76. Confused Says:

Please send me the email to the fix in order to update avg on my windows vista system. I’m getting the “could not contact update server” error message as everyone else has been getting.

  77. Confused Says:

By the way I am running Windows Vista

  78. Confused Says:

Im running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. and I am unable to do a manual update – im getting the same erorr message. Also I tried to check the advanced settings/options but im not sure if im going in the right area because im not seeing Options. In AVG I go to tools Advanced Settings and then….But please help. Thanks for your quick repsonse.

  79. Se7en Says:

    Dear Dexed,

there is an option in Avg to update from the directory…which my VISTA expert says is really easy on Vista..but takes some effort do do on XP…..but there are instruction on the AVG site….

And if you go to the C: drive and go to AVG in programs..and look through the program folder..you’ll see where to put the update…

So far I have only done it on Vista….but I’ll check again on XP….but it should be no issue….

    Hope that helps,

    Se7en

  80. Se7en Says:

    Dear Confused,

What version of Vista are you using….it matter a bunch….and if that is not the case…are you able to manual update….that also matters…and if so..have you tried to unchecked the DNS server button in advance settings/options…and if you did…make sure you are running update and scan at least at an 1hr 45min interval…

Hope to hear from you soon,

    Se7en

  81. Se7en Says:

    Dear Confused,

No problem that is my job……Vista home Premium should allow you to do automatic updates as well as manual….but I have quite a few e-mails claiming the exact opposite…I run XP..but I do have 2 ppl whole work for me..that run Vista…..

My Vista expert Ghost..says you need to do the following….

    1. open AVG interface
    2. Click on TOOLS
    3. Go down to the ADVANCE SETTINGS
    4. Click
    5. Go down to the last section called UPDATE
    6. Click
    7. Try un-checking USE DNS UPDATE

After that press APPLY then OK

—–Make sure you are not running any other programs in the background…like Outlook..like it says on the third checked box….

This is what Ghost said if you have dial-up..and or slow..Internet connection…

    1. follow the first 4 steps as above…
    2. Chose second option Dial-up
    3. click
    4. Make sure the box is checked off where is says use Dial-up connection….and if you don’t want your connection to stay open..make sure the next box under is checked also…

Both ghost and myself…hope this helps…by all means let me know…

    Se7en

  82. Confused Says:

Dear se7en thanks for your efforts to help; however i did exactly what you said and afterwhich I tried to run the update and it appeared as if it wanted to update because it took a little while but it still failed with that same erorr message. :( Any other suggestions??? Please help.

  83. Se7en Says:

    Dear Confused,

I’ll have to get Ghost on the line…because like I said he does…the Vista related stuff…sorry..but I”l have to get back to ya….I’ll check with him 6pm EST Oct 9….and get back to you..with what ever he says….

  90. Daniel Says:

Hey computer savvy i was wondering if u can send me some tips/solution to fix avg 8.0 cause my avg won’t update the update manager it just says The connection with update server has failed. Please follow these steps:

Make sure your Internet connection is active, please try to open the http://www.avg.com website.

Try to run the update later or schedule an automatic update for another time

Make sure the connection parameters are set properly.

Im not bad at cpu’s but im not that big of a nerd to figure this out

(Btw this is a very good blog the best i’ve seen yet for problems with avg Im glad i came across it tonight.)

  91. Daniel Says:

I’m not saying that your a nerd lol

  92. Se7en Says:

    Dear Daniel,

No worries, in some respects…I am a nerd….trust me that is not anywhere near what other people have called me…

Oh and thanks about the best blog thing….I try really hard…and your not the first one to tell me that….

Anyhow…I believe your issue…is related to AVG update manager not able to connect to AVG update server…and that can sometimes can by Fixed by…un-checking DNS update..in the ADVANCE OPTIONS then go to update…and un-check the box……

If that does not fix the issue..I need to know what you are running Windows XP Home or what ever and what service pack you are using…2, or 3..unless you are running Vista..which only has one service pack…

Hope to hear from you soon,

    Se7en

  93. Daniel Says:

i have a the service pack 3 and im running Windows xp home

  94. Veryon Says:

I always loved avg, it has proven me best.

  95. Se7en Says:

    Dear Veryon,

Happy to hear it is working well for someone…because if all the hits are any indication..you are one of the very slim few…who it does work well for..

    Thanks for the comment,

    Se7en

  96. Se7en Says:

    Dear Daniel,

If you have XP with Service Pack 3..AVG 8 Free Anti-Virus is not compatible with it…I don’t even think AVG paid works..with it…

The best thing you can do…is get AVIRA or AVAST….have not had a chance to test if it works with Service pack 3…thou..but that is very easy to find out..install it and run a manual scan..the set it to automatic and see if it runs..then try to update..both are small files..and very easy o install and un-install

they are available for free @ http://www.download.com

Sorry as far as I know…AVG 8.0.175 is not compatible with service pack 3…in almost all cases…thou there are about 10 cases that for what ever reason it has worked..and I still don’t know why that is….guess just luck..

    Hope this helps,

    Se7en

  97. Katfish Says:

I’m trying the ‘more separation’ of schedule times for auto-scan vs. auto-update. THANKS for the idea!

  98. Se7en Says:

    Dear Katfish,

Your more then welcome…I feel like an idiot for not thinking of it earlier…because it did fix the issue for me almost 100%…

    Thanks for the comment,

Problem of getting Update Manager to Update automatically (version AVG 8.0.175) : I have tried several times to ’save changes’ under the ‘Update Manager Settings’. Won’t keep the settings.

  100. Se7en Says:

    Dear Jim,

  101. Mike McNamara Says:

    Hi Se7en,

Found your blog when I set aside some time to try and figure out what had happened to my copy of AVG 8.0 Free updates not running for some time. Found your response of October 27th 2008 and problem solved in that I have XP pro SP3. How strange that an Anti-Virus developer can’t even keep up with MS SP’s!!!

Will have to try another product, but having previously abandoned Mcafee (bloatware) , Norton (even bigger bloatware) ZoneAlarm when their support got bad (though it’s got better on Vista). I’ll have a look at your suggestions.

Interesting Blog, I’ll come back and see some other pages.

    Cheers

    Mike

  102. Se7en Says:

    Dear Mike,

I’m happy I could help…yeah…AVG/Grisoft told me….that there are not enough people using Service pack 3 for a patch….but I do get the XP PRO thing…but all the other Freeware Virus programs with with Window’s XP Pro…..but there are a lot of freeware virus programs that still don’t work with Service pack..for the same reason…

Hope you continue to enjoy my blog….

  103. ewan Says:

    help please sir,

i’m having problems installing the avgfree.. failure to connect to server to update..all the above problems..tried all your fixes..as best i could..to no avail..i’m brand new to computing which doesn’t help..
uninstalled avgfree and tried avira..that wont go in either properly either..
i,ve got vista home premium..previously had panda security.. did a scan with avira and it found a w95 blumblebee,1738 summat..

    any ideas??

    thanks

    ewan

  104. ewan Says:

the flippin thing is going out the window in minute.. its just finished the above mentioned scan.. window opened saying i need to restart to mend the whatever..so i told it to restart..another window popped out saying ‘workstation on demand has stopped working’.. was forever getting similar with panda..’panda jobs stopped working’..
i restarted..avira told me its more than 3 days since i’ve updated..and that its turned off..that i know cos it wont update..i’m just going round in those ever decreasing circles..and we know where they end up!!!

    ewan

  105. ewan Says:

just been reading ‘vista for dummies’.. says in there” that windows security centre has a problem identifying installed software..in the specific case of avgfree it may not realize its running properly”.. how do i know if its that or that it really isn’t working properly?

    ewan..again

  106. seema thakur Says:

    your website good

  107. Se7en Says:

    Dear Ewan,

The Virus you got is a false positive virus…and poses no threat to your computer….it is a left over file from when you uninstalled Panda….very common nothing to worry about..I have been told..by one of my members that..if you run a registry scanner/fixer…it should fix the issue…but there is no danger…

Now about AVG…you maybe able to fix the update issue..if you un-check the box..that say Update Via DNS…which means using the main AVG virus definition server…this sometimes will work…but you are better of with a program..that will keep your computer safe..and is reliable…

I recommend AVIRA…and if you have a lot of Viruses or Adware/Spyware Try AVAST….not very user friendly to people new to computers..but it works well..let me know if you require and further help..

    Thanks for the comment…

    And I hope this helps,

    Se7en

  108. Se7en Says:

    Dear Ewan,

Sorry to hear that…the problem is that you may not have the automatic update box checked in the administrator section…under scheduler…the other reason is that you may not be running AVIRA in Admin mode..to do this use the right click button on your mouse…or go to manual scan..and there is an icon…called Run as Administrator…that should fix the issue…

But there have been many reports that AVIRA..servers are jammed right now causing delays and even failed update attempts…

If you require more information or clarification let me know…

PS. I also over the past 2 weeks have had issues updating my Vista computers..so it more then likely is not your computer or internet..

    Via comment or e-mail..

    Se7en

  109. Se7en Says:

    Dear Ewan,

Yes that is an issue…because Vista requires..Admin privileges to install or even un-install programs…and if you don’t do it the right way…it will say..things like not enough space on drive..write error or even..file is corrupt…please try to install again..or re-download..

By the way how is Vista For dummies…?

Hope this clears things up..by all means send me another line..if you need more help,

    Se7en

  110. ewan Says:

    se7en sir

thanks for your help..and reassurance that its not me doing something very dummy like..
vista for dummies does help me somewhat..along with my laptops for dummies.. its hard work getting the hang of computers after 47 years of blissful ignorance.
i’ve put the panda back on for now so got some av over.. just have to put up with it seemingly slowing the computer down.. that went back without a hitch..typically!!!
have done a registry scan thing so all should be ok now..

    thanks again

    ewan

  111. Se7en Says:

    Dear Ewan,

I have not heard a lot about Panda..but I’ll look at it..over the next little while…and maybe even do a review and or compare…

    Hi,
I am having problems with avg 8.0.176 update.
It wont update the anti-virus database, nor the anti-spyware, nor the update manager.

It gives me the following message:
The connection with the update server has failed. Please follow these steps:
    - Make sure your internet connection is active, please try to open the http://www.avg.com website.
    - Try to run the update later or schedule an automatic update for another time.
    - Make sure the connection parameters are set properly.

I am running XP Pro and have already installed/uninstalled AVG 8.0.176 serveral times, in the hope that it would make a difference… all to no avail!

I would be really grateful for any help/advice you can give.
    Thanks a lot!!

    • Se7en Says:

      Dear Estela,

The reason it does not work..is because AVG does not work with XP Pro…..at least till they make a patch..but I would not hold my breath..

      Hope that clears things up,

      Se7en

    • Se7en Says:

      Dear DaAlyMan,

AVG does not work with XP home Service pack 3..the issue is the service pack 3..you can restore or rollback to service pack 2..but I would leave it as is..and just get..

      Hope that clears things up,

I have this problem know but only on one computer, which has windowsxp
    home, and service pack3.
Avg program will not update it’s virus data, even when i have used the
update from directory, which i had download to a thumb drive from a working computer.
The strange thing is that i can not download any updates for any of the
various programs like avg, the browser does not load their page or their
download sites at all, but i can get on to every other site.
Any site that is a legit site for programs like this will not load in firfox3
    browser or ie7.
Have uninstalled and installed avg at least 4 times with same results.

  123. Estela Says:

    Help!!

  124. DaAlyMan Says:

Thank you Se7en will try those then.

  125. Bill Windels Says:

The problem is Scanning with version 8.0.176 under Vista stalls on Windows\system32\rasmans.dll every time. It even stalls when I scan the file rasmans.dll and nothing else. This was discovered because Vista was freezing every day while I was away from my Dell inspiron laptop. I would have to use the power button to shutdown. (By the way, I was able to scan the file on a thumb drive from another laptop runinning AVG 8.0.176 and XP). Tracking the problem led to the rasmans.dll discovery.
I have done just about everything on your website to fix this freeze problem to no avail. I am mentioning this because maybe someone can benefit or create another solution to AVG related Vista freezes and “corrupted scan logs”, which is the result of the frozen scans on the Rasmans.dll. I am aware the file is necessary to run automated remote access processes needed by other programs.

    • Se7en Says:

      Dear Bill,

I just got a Vista main computer…I know..that DELL computers have always had an issue with AVG 8..since it came out..but I have not had any reports..
regarding that issue..in particular..the issue I keep on running into is..the one where AVG after updating asks you to re-start every time…
      with Vista only..

But I’ll ask the rest of my team..and look into it..I maybe able to solve your issue yet..

      Thanks for the comment,

  127. michael Says:

got this from avg own web site. followed the instructions and it worked.

Even if your Internet connection is working correctly, incorrect DNS servers may be filled in, affecting AVG update. This can be caused e.g. by some virus that was previously on your computer.

    * Open menu Start -> (Settings) -> Control Panel.
    * Double-click on Network connections.
    * Right-click on the connection you are using and choose Properties.
    * Double-click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item on the General tab.
    * Please check (and modify if necessary) the settings of IP address and DNS servers according to your Internet Provider settings or choose the Obtain * * DNS server address automatically option.
    * Confirm the settings by clicking on the OK button.
    * Close the window.

avg8 updates no problem now . regards

    hi
yes im going to be the one millionth or so person to ask for the information on how to update my AVG. i am running vista home premium. and have the latest AVG free currently running, although i have still got my AVG paid version ;) but thought something had gone awry so installed the freebie.
its been driving me batty for over a week now. i even rang my ISP and gave them a roasting blaming them for blocking AVG their end cos it could not possibly be me, apology may be in order, dammit.

    Thankgod for you!!

    • Se7en Says:

      Dear Maxine,

Sorry a little confused…Did you fix your issue with my post or do you still need help ? and thanks for the kind words that is why I am here to help…

  141. maxine Says:

    no never fixed the problem!
i got sick and tired of trying.
i downloaded the avg newest to no avail… still same problem.
i checked for those files and coulds not find them, the ctf ones.

so i downloaded avasti and it found virus’s on my pc that avg did not pick up on( had only been without protection for a week)

is there any further solutions to the avg saga?

put my brother on to your site also… he has a vista issue

    • Se7en Says:

      Dear Maxine,

As far as I know I have all the AVG Free issue….up…I’ll check again 2morrow…and AVAST is a great choice..I personally use it for quick virus clean ups..if I suspect a virus is on said PC..

      Thanks for the comment,

  143. Deepak Says:

    Hi,
I have a similar problem, but I am only able to login to the safe mode, where I am not allowed to install any software, it gives different errors for different softwares. Is user32.dll the only problem ? If so, can’t I just replace it using a command prompt and remove AVG from the startup programs through msconfig ?

    Deepak

    • Se7en Says:

      Dear Deepak,

What kind of computer do you have?

What version of AVG do you have?

Is it possible you have a virus?

Did you try to update your computer before you could not log-in or get the BSOD?

  145. Lesley Says:

Grrr….I sure hope you can help me by emailing your tips. Around early to mid Feb my AVG was no longer updating automatically. When I went in to manually update, it said it was updated and required a restart. Restarted then same thing – exclamation point on AVG tray icon again and again. I then went to AVG website and downloaded the 237 build hoping that would fix. Nope – I gave me a warning midway through install and said this “One warning ocurred. warning: action failed for file augmtx86.sys. stopping service. service avgmf86 failed to grogress during stopping @ checkpoint 0 (wait int 10000 ms) in 90216 ms.” Huh? It downloading with that ‘error’ and seems to be scanning but not nearly as many files as before. Still have the darned exclamation point, but now when I try and manually update it says “General error”. Ug! The virus and spyware scanner says they are outdated. Neep your help badly. I have a 12 year old son that is a rouge surfer and he’s sure to pick up a virus if I don’t get this mended asap. I have Vista Home SP1 (Should I update to 2-3?) Many thanks for your assistance…. :)

    • Se7en Says:

      Dear Lesley,

First off..Vista only has one service pack…you maybe not installing AVG with Administrative access..and thous you are getting that error…what version of Vista do you have (Home premium ???)

PS..u could also always try AVIRA or AVAST..both I recommend way more then AVG….

Hope that helps if not email me back or re-comment,

    se7en,
i was just doing some maintenance on my pc and noticed my automatic updates were not updating.. i tried manual and once again it said could not update so i investigated and it seems i have a trojan on my pc that is stopping the automatic updates and also stopping virus definitions from updating.
avasti is picking up the trojan and moving it to vault but it keeps coming back.
i googled and fetched it and nothing is coming up on what it is and how to remove it. i have searched my sytems and cant find it either. am posting what it is (straight from avasti virus chest) and was wandering if you could shed some light on this?
hubbies pc is the same except he cant even put on virus protection as his system crashes immediately

gaopdxftheoerw.dll in systems32 and the virus is called win32:fasec [Trj]

    I have windows 98 with avg8.0 free.
I keep getting notifications to upgrade to Avg 8.5 but it will not let me.
How do I stop the popup telling me to upgrade every time I turn on my computer?

    • Se7en Says:

      Dear Margie,

First as far as I am aware AVG 8.5 is not compatible with Windows 98..so thus you can not upgrade to 8.5. So What I would recommend you to do is to un-install AVG 8.0 and install AVAST. Your will stop getting th pop-ups and be protected as well. Just a heads up AVAST is th only anti-virus free anyways that will work with Windows 98.

      Hope that helps,

  164. Matt Says:

hi I had problems today with avg 8.5 (on xppro sp3)when I booted up my laptop I had a pop-up informing me of a problem with my avg license (probably corrupted etc it informed me) so I attempted to do a repair installation which ended up stopping halfway through asking for the location of the installation (dat) files. So I uninstalled and downloaded a new copy of avg 8.5.364 which again got halfway through before asking for the location of the installation files again. At first I thought it was A corrupted install file so I deleted it and tried downloading again – same result.
I then realized that before I had shut down the computer the night before I had turned on remote desktop and a folder to share with my downstairs computer so I could print off a letter I had written on the laptop.I usually have my network shares turned on downstairs so I can play my music files on my lappy but cant usually access the laptop from downstairs as I usually have no need to,till last night that is.
Anyway I turned off the shared folder and the remote desktop and setup then completed flawlessly.
I don’t know if it was the fact that remote desktop was on or that I had turned on a folder share (or both)That affected setup but it kinda makes sense (seeing how its the free version and not meant for networks)but saying that Its all up and working now and i am still networked with my other computer just thought the info might help
great blog by the way se7en

    • Se7en Says:

      Dear Matt,

Actually…your more then likely hit the nail on the head…AVG Free says in the terms and agreements that you can’t use it for networks or on servers. So yeah I would have to say I agree with your conclusion….100%…

First off you have to update your AVG because it is out of date, the latest version is (8.5.409). But the newsiest install file you can find is (8.5.406)..I would recommend to un-install AVG Free and re-start your computer then. Install the newest version via download.com. Remy,
Thanks for all the help. However I am still having issues. Im running avg 8.5.423 PAID 1 yr lic. I have tried to “upgrade” to 9.0 from the little box on the right hand side of the avg center. says” click here to easily upgrade to the new enhanced version AVG version” I click it and i get to about 98% downloaded and the popup “General error” comes swooping down like an eagle on a rat, and tells me it failed. I have uninstalled AVG twice and tried to run it again and the same things happen. I use final Uninstaller first then ashampoo uninstaller to clean out the regs and then cccleaner to double check everything. help me please your my only hope at the moment..cuz the guys on the free forums on avg are kinda rude….

    • Highcard Says:

I think after 3 days i have figured it by mistake :)

go there if you have a paid 8.xx licence and copy and pate you # in there and everything should download perfectly……im in the middle of dl’ing currently. if i have any issues i come back and tell ya’ll thanks

      Hi-c

      • Remy "Se7en" Says:

        Dear Highcard.

Happy you figured it out..by all means let me know..what happens…Since your comment I have gotten a flood of e-mails regarding the same issue. So it would be nice to have a fix..

        Later dayz,

        Remy “Se7en”

    • Remy "Se7en" Says:

      Dear Highcard,

Yeah I agree the Forum is still has major issues…that I am trying to help them fix at the moment..they really need a blog and not a forum. Ok I, generally don’t deal with AVG paid version of their anti-virus. But since you asked so nicely….ok…

Now this is just a guess…but. I imagine your issue is that your PAID 1 yr lic. does not officially recognize AVG 9.0 yet. The reason is becuase AVG has not fully changed over. So I know this sucks large but hold off for a bit and use the current paid version you have. The reason I say this is because you are about the 125th person to report this issue to me.

You would run into the same issues if you tryed to do the same thing with the free version of AVG…

      1. You have to un-install AVG Free 8.5

      2.Re-start your computer

      3. Install AVG free 9.0

      4. re-start your computer

      5. Update AVG 9.0

      6. Re-start your computer

      7. Your done….run scan optimization ..if you have not already done so..and your all good..

      ——————————————-

**I am just making a point of why I know it is not your fault abut not being able to upgrade…It is on AVG/Grisofts fault and until they fully change over there will still end up with that error.

      ——————————————

Hope that explains things a little better,

      Remy “Se7en”

  181. Sell Says:

Hi i just downloaded the ver 9 from the avg site and when i install it on to my laptop it asks me for a internet connection or proxy connection i do not have a internet connection on my laptop so how can i install avg because it will not let me go any further. or is there something else i can do?

    • Remy "Se7en" Says:

      Dear Sell,

All you have to do is ….get a flash stick/ USB stick and or portable hard-drive and go to download.com and download AVG..Then put the install folder onto the computer without the Internet and run install program..you should be good…thou you will have to download all the updates the same way….then transfer to your computer via the Virus definitions folder..which is a lot of extra work…..

I am not aware of how to do manual VD transfers becuase I never recommend doing it..due to common corruptions issues related to it and just connecting it to the Internet is a way easier method..even if you just have it connected for 15 mins to ensure you have the latest updated version of AVG Free.

Hope that answers your question. If not please comment or e-mail me back and I can go into further details…

      Talk to your later

  182. AndysGirl Says:

Hi, I came to your site from a google search on “avg free 9 causing system error”. (I have windows xp) I used to have ZA, but uninstalled it and loaded free AVG 8.5. A couple days later, my comp started crashing and restart. When it restarts MSN says it recovered from a serious error. This happened almost every hour. Windows recommended a System resore, so I did that and it seemed to fix it.

The system resore went back to when I had ZA and not AVG. So, I uninstalled ZA again and then installed the FREE AVG 9. What do you know, same thing happened. All of a sudden, system shuts down and same MSN system recovered from serious error message again.

I also have Spyware Detector and Spyware Max Registry Cleaner. Could it be that AVG is not compatible with these?

    • Remy "Se7en" Says:

      Dear AndysGirl,

Well there are serious issues with Zone Alarm with AVG installed. Now AVG Free does not work well with a lot of freeware programs that overlap on what AVG already does so that would be any VIRUS SCAN, SPYWARE / ADWARE scan programs.

Oh what kind of computer do you have ? and is it a laptop or desktop ?

Please provided me with the most complete list of programs you have installed on your computer,

Please answer the 3 questions and get back to me,

Then AVG updated becuase I imagine you had 8.5.XXX version installed and if that is the case then it would not install an update till 8.5.425 becuase AVG no longer updates that version. So that would explain your AVG Free appearing not to update….

If that is not case..the way I explained it above..please clarify…

Hope to hear form you real soon,

      Remy “Se7en”
