I just received a bunch of e-mails regarding AVG 8.0/8.5 Free Anti-Virus saying it will not update or it keeps crashing. I have looked into it and have found some of the reasons for the crashes..
First some of the reasons for AVG not being able to update are
1. You are running a few Internet applications at one time like uTorrrent, WeatherEye or Windows Update, Windows Defender Update….
2. You have to many Internet windows open…
Ways to fix the Issue
Now this is sounds stupid, but it works close all your Internet applications and just run AVG 8.0/8.5. So far that has worked and will update with no issue in most cases. Please let me know if this does not work or you have found other issues with this software….
Till My Next Post,

I can’t seem to get AVG to even run. I’m not real good at the technical side of all this, so maybe I’m missing something that’s elementary to you, but I’m flummoxed. I tried the fix you suggest, and AVG just sits there when I try various ways of running it.
July 9, 2008 at 5:40 PM |
Hi Steve,
Ya check your inbox..I just e-mailed you…but I sad to say you are not the only one…that is unable to run AVG..I recommend in most cases AVAST..right now..
Thanks for the comment,

AVG is simply broken. I tried the following suggestions all to no avail:
1) Download the updates manually and use the program to update from directory
2) Uninstall, clean the registry (CCleaner and AMUST) and reinstall
3) Download the full installer and use it’s removal utility to uninstall, and then reinstall it
4) Shut down the firewall while doing #3
5) Shut down the firewall while doing #1
6) Run as an administrator
7) Install to a non-protected directory (c:\AVG)
The worst thing is that it worked very well for the last 6 months, then suddenly stopped updating. A virus scanner with no updates is like a car without gas. I will not use it.
According to their people the message
General Error – not enough free memory, write error
actually means
“You need to close other programs that are running, that is what the error is telling you. Make sure you don’t have any other security applications installed/running, and close all un-needed background processes.”
Well that is a load of something, since there is no other security software running on my system after I turn my firewall off. Even so, the programs all played nice for months, so pointing at other programs and blaming them is frankly a M$ tactic.
I guess it is time to look for a new program. I wonder if the people that do Comodo Fierwall do virus scanners?
August 7, 2008 at 1:41 PM |
Dear Chris,
Thanks for the heads up….you hit it on pretty much every point….AVG/Grisoft..has tried on many occasions to say…I’m lying on many of my proven claims…That AVG is a virtual paper weight…
AVG….is a real disaster….so many glitches, so little time…
And about the advice..they gave you….I’m not surprised at all…I have at least 5 e-mails reflecting what you have said…..
Well any ways to the bigger matter….
What should you use….
I use AVIRA..myself..and on corporate computers I recommend AVAST….
there is not much different…about them…
AVIRA..is easy…very safe….and comes back with very accurate automatic scan…But does not pick up as much as AVAST manual scan..
AVAST…is a lot harder to use..and has a hard to set up Automatic scan
Hope that helps,
Se7en

Hi,
I recently removed AVG Free. 8 from my computer. Everytime I booted up my system and clicked on the icon an error message appeared stating there was an error with AVG interface. If I went into the actual “C” drive to access the various files to attempt to repair there came up a box that required a customer number. How is one meant to have Customer Number when the programme is free?
As it is I became fed up with trying to search for a fix that took me in circles and end up with the same problem.
I had heard from computer savvy people that AVG was a reliable antivirus programme but my recent problems seem to indicate the opposite.
August 9, 2008 at 4:27 PM |
Dear Alan,
I don’t know what those so called Computer savvy people calling AVG 8.0 is good for anything….I’m thinking they have been living under a rock..or are doing some fantasy drug I’d like to get my hands on…..
But anyhow to the issue at hand…I have gotten a few e-mails..that say AVG free has asked for a number…not sure if that would be a customer number…I also..know that AVIRA..asked for an ID number..which is free and is used to track…where the program is being used..but I have not heard of AVG doing that….
Now about the error message..I know for a fact it is a registry issue…I had that issue myself….you can read my post about that at…
http://computersavvy.wordpress.com/2008/07/28/avg-80-free-anti-virus-registry-fixer-scanner-e-mail/
Hope that helps,

Simply disable the DNS Update from Tools / Advanced Settings of AVG Free.
It solves both the update error as well as the bin file missing error on my system.

As a novice computer and internet user, this all is enough to make me pull my hair out! My son, who is a degree in IT loads programs and fixes my computer problems for me, but he is not always available, so I am trying to find an easy solution for this update problem with my AVG virus program that I can do myself. For a computer challenged person like me, would it be better for me just to PURCHASE a virus scan such as McAfee, or is it possible for me to try a fix on AVG that I can actually do myself. Thanks for listening. (By the way, I really appreciate your website!)
August 29, 2008 at 8:55 PM |
Dear Diane,
I am in 2 schools of thought..one yes…you could buy a paid virus program…but saying that they, can be overly complected..what I would recommend as a first. Step is…download a free Virus scan other then AVG…Like AVIRA that I use..or AVAST..if you have time to tinker around…
By all mean let me know,,and I’ll guide you through it…
and the site to download the free programs are http://www.download.com a very safe site…it is a sister company of the mega CNET..
Let me know,

I’ve been building many computers with XP. After loading the OS, I install all updates, including SP3, before adding any other programs. What I’ve noticed is that AVG Free 8.0 installs without any problems and will even update the first time. After that, it refuses to do any more updates. After reading these posts, I decided to remove SP3 from a computer I just built. Lo and behold, AVG Free 8.0 performed an automatic update! It’s now obvious that SP3 doesn’t play nice with AVG Free 8.0. I wonder what AVG plans to do about it…if anything!
November 6, 2008 at 11:43 PM |
Dear Mark,
I am a tech head myself….and have used AVG for a long…time…and I did a lot of testing….I really wanted to prove myself and my team wrong about…AVG not working on Windows XP Pro and also not working with XP with service pack 3…
Now I have seen from e-mails sent to me by other..readers..that they claim that there is not a need and there is a relatively small number of people using service pack 3 for them to make a patch….
Now I know that is not the case….and they are just hiding the fact that they can’t…..
Needless to say..it is a bunch of BS……it is needed…but very doubtful..it will happen..and AVIRA and AVAST will take it’s place…it’s just the fact of freeware….people go to the best….

I have service pack 3 but I have no problem with automatic update of AVG free version 8.
November 23, 2008 at 8:06 PM |
Dear Raja,
It is not an issue with everybody….who has service pack 3. installed..but a lot of people are reporting that their is a major issue related computers with XP and has service pack 3 installed…..mind you there could be a hundred reasons why..including other Freeware programs, other virus scans, Bad hard-drive sectors, corrupted registry, Virus…
Thanks for the comment and happy to hear AVG is working for you….

I have AVG 8.0.169, Vista, and PeoplePC. AVG tries to update, but the progress bar stays at more that 1/3, less than 1/2, forever. I tried having no apps running (except PeoplePC, my ISP) but no change. In the Task Mgr I see nothing that looks like Windows Defender, but it may be running.
Any suggestions? It has done a couple of updates successfully, but the latest one…seems like no go.
Any suggestions?

Dear Karl,
AVG/Grisoft is in the midst of a major update…to version 8.0.199…and this time they are slowly releasing the update country by country region by region…to try to prevent this update issue…it is more then likely do to over loaded servers.
However…if there does appear to be an issue..keep your eyes on my blog…and if there is a fix..I’ll post it..

Hi,
I hope this will be of help to you.
http://free.avg.com/faq.num-1567?srch=will|not|update#faq_1567
Also, to the person whose application keeps crashing, try doing this:
Start –> Run –> “C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgui.exe /a” (without the quotation marks). This will open the program in safemode. If the program does open when you do this, then you simply have a registry problem.
I hope that helps.

wHAT sUP Se7en,
Here is my problem , The thing is when AVG updating it shows “General Error – not enough free memory, write error”. Now I seen this before and I had deleted some files I don’t use alot on the hard drive, and it worked. But when the General error message came up again i try deleting files from the hard drive and even some software programs from the control panel but now it still show the General Error and I’m running out of ideas. My computer has windows 2000 professional (service pack 4) with a 12.7 GB hard drive and a pentium 3 processor if that help. I appreciate your assistants.

AVG has always been a pain for me. I’m having the exact same prob and nothing here seems to have helped. For the past week now my AVG hasn’t been updating with message “general error- not enough free memory, write error”
My laptop isn’t a very good one, not too much memory on it to begin with so I’m thinking about getting rid of AVG all together as it’s always flipping out
Se7en, this Avira thing, is it Free and does it work for Windows XP?? If so, are you able to send a link???
If not, are there any other virus scanners that can be recommended?
February 7, 2009 at 6:13 PM |
Dear Anni,
Have you tried doing a fresh install..from download.com or the AVG website….
if you need more help let me know…if not try to install AVIRA or AVAST..they seem to not have any real issues that I am aware of..
Hope that helps,
Se7en
February 25, 2009 at 9:46 PM |
I have been getting an error saying simply “general error” every time I have tried to update the new AVG 8.0. I tried the fix suggested on the AVG website (uninstall and reinstall) and that only temporarily fixed the problem until the next time I tried to update.
Eventually, I searched around on the net and found a fix that so far works like a charm! The fix was to do a file search (including hidden and sytem files) for “avg*.ctf” and then to delete those files and try to update. I found 2 of these files (both in the same directory) and deleted them. For the first time, I was able to update.

I worked through all the tips and tricks (including several ways of new install) described in your posts – without success. My AVG free (vs.8.5.283) still refuses to do the update. The OS of my notebook is XP Pro SP3 (which I bought for my *private* notebook): Is it really true that the ‘professional’ version prevents that a AVG free version can be used? Since it was recommended to me to use AVG instead of Avira, I wanted to give it a try, but after these initial experiences I am almost willing to go back to my old virus scanner.
March 27, 2009 at 7:50 PM |
Dear Niles,
Yes in most cases it is true..if you have XP PRO on your computer..a lot of the time..it will not let you update and sometimes even install AVG at all..but I’m surprised because..a lot of ppl are telling me that issue was fixed with the last 2 versions of AVG…
So then I’ll have to look into that issue yet again…but I would recommend ..AVIRA or AVAST in the mean time…I personally recommend AVIRA at the moment…really easy to use and really good detection rate..but if you are infested with viruses then..prob AVAST is a better fit for ya…
Hope that helps,
Se7en

April 24, 2009 at 1:08 AM |
Dear Alba Mcleod,
The best thing to do is go to your government run employment agency or social services and they should have a list of grants and possible website linked to them….also banks may also have similar list of legit grants possible agency..that may help…
By all means let me know if you need help with verifing if it is real or a scam e-mail or company….but to be real..it is gonna be really hard to find a legal means to get a grant…
Good luck and by all means let me know..

I was unable to update AVG 8.5 free (which has always worked awesome for me).
The program displayed “General Error” and would not update.
I simply went to Advanced Settings>Update>Manage (in AVG 8.5 free) and clicked on the “Delete temporary update files” button.
The problem was resolved immediately!

Problem fixed. These posts led me in the right direction. My AVG started getting “Update Failed” – “General Error” after updating to AVG 8.5. I fixed it by disabling my Comodo Firewall and manually applying the updates. For those of you non-technical people, the steps I took were as follows:
1) Go to Network connections, Right click on my Wireless connection – and chose “Disable”
2) On system tray, right click on Comodo icon and pick Firewall Security level and chose “Disable” and then “Defense+ Security Level” and also chose “Disable”.
3) On system tray click AVG icon, go to Tools-Update From Directory…- select “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg8\update\download”. It will find the previously downloaded updates, click “Update” button.
4) Re-enable firewall
5: Re-enable network connection
It’s now up-to-date!
